  • bpa free tins is good too!

    • BPA free products may not be as good as it appears to be …

      https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bpa-free-plastic-…

" In 2012 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of baby bottles that contain bisphenol …. A recent research reveals that a common BPA replacement, bisphenol S (BPS), may be just as harmful."

      Or in https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/09/bpa-substitutes-may-…

In 2003, while carrying out mouse studies unrelated to BPA, Patricia Hunt, a reproductive biologist at Washington State University in Pullman, and her >colleagues found that the compound was leaching out of plastic cages housing female mice. The result was an increase in chromosomal abnormalities in the >lab animals and their offspring. …
Hunt sent samples from damaged and undamaged cages to Roy Gerona, a chemist at UC San Francisco. Gerona and colleagues determined that the damaged cages >were leaching out compounds manufacturers often use to replace BPA, such as bisphenol S (BPS) and diphenyl sulfone.

  • Awesomeness!!!

It's so cheap to buy these dried and then cook them. You can freeze them for when you need them.

    • Yeah but you can burn them etc.

      • Only if you are careless.

    • How much electricity are you using to heat and then freeze?

      • +3

If you are just talking about cost, you will get your money back after 2 or 3 tins worth.

If you're talking environmentally, the cost of canning, transport, etc, far outweighs the minimal energy used to cook and freeze.

    • +2

i get 1kg bag of dried chickpeas for $1.99. i just place a small amount in a bowl with water and microwave for 10m.

      • +2

        Dude where

      • Microwaves sometimes use a lot more energy for cooking than conventional methods. For heating up food it's another matter.

        • interesting. i just microwave everything simply for convenience, a cup of water for tea, bowl of vegetables, bowl of oat bran.

        • +1

Use pressure cooker instead of microwave.

          • @No ONE: This. Totally.

      • sorry $2.99, just a local grocery shop in brisbane

      • Some beans need to be cooked far more than that to remove lectins and make them safe to eat.

        • -1

well you can shove the lectins up your rectin
What even is a lectin anyway?

    • You can also use the aquafaba to make meringues.

  • To anyone reading this PLEASE try kidney beans on toast, it is so (profanity) good. You can put avo on it too if that idea grosses you out. Just make sure you salt it.

    • +1

There's a popular Middle Easter dish made from kidney beans called 'ful' that you could try. It's very nice.

      • Nice, that looks delicious. Would go well with some corn chips I think.

I love chickpeas so goddamn much. They go well with every vegetable. Pumpkin+cabbage+chickpeas is a GOAT combination.

  • Love the butter beans. Wonder why they're not included.
