I got at HN Gordon an Acer Iconia A500 for $452. Just for Reference

replacable battery for the Toshiba sounds handy.

        • but the rest acer win.

I mean how often you are going to replace the batt? how about the travel charger.

        • +5

          Medium-tight,
I have it 5 to 4 to the Acer but 2 of those pluses are dimensions and weight which are personal preference. If you back that out its 4 - 3 to the Toshiba. Both are very good units. Very similar features. Either way you cant go wrong if you're in the market for a tablet

      • +2

thanks for the quick responses and links

      • Toshiba laptops (old Tecra, Satellite) are also generally better made than Acer though (Aspire, Timeline/X). Not sure whether their Android tablets have the same quality.

        • +1

I would have agreed til I just got finished playing with two family members' new laptops; one Toshi L750D & an Acer 5750G; the delineation is significantly narrower. I've always been a fan of the VFM of the Acers, and using them reliably at work for a few years now hasn't tarnished that. My past experiences with Toshiba have been very positive though, but I don't think they've kept their game up!

I'm not too impressed by the build quality of that particuar Toshi, quite flimsy IMHO, I hold grave concerns for the screen hinges, they're already quite creaky; but otherwise they feel very much on par. However, bang for buck the Toshi is completely smashed by the Acer for only ~$50 more! ;)

  • +3

I've got the Toshiba AT100/Thrive. I recommend it for anyone who wants a tablet that is actually useful ;)

    • +1

out of interest, what do you find useful on the tablet? I'm still trying to justify getting one :)

      • +3

The full-size SD card slot is useful. Along with the full-size USB port.

I plan on using this on holidays. I own a DSLR and usually like to check out the photos I take to make sure they're ok - the tiny screen on the back of a camera can be useless. I've tested it out and with RawDroid app, I can quickly see photos from my camera on the tablet. Also, if the holidays are particularly long, I can easily transfer photos from the SD card to a portable hard drive.

All without the need for silly adapters and USB hubs. So the connectivity of this tablet is a major plus.

Also, since the SD Card slot is SDXC compatible, it means if i absolutely need to, I can get a high capacity (128+GB card) in the future to expand the storage. Although, I honestly can't see that happening in the future, it's actually good to know I can ;)

Apart from connectivity, the thicker and somewhat rugged feel (thanks to the rubberised back) makes it feel better when using it out and about. This is a tablet that I don't just use around the house. I use it for work as well (I work on flight simulators, including the full flight motion ones), and it felt perfect to be using it inside the cockpit :) The fact I can use it when on the move is a good indicator to show that the weight of the device is also nothing to be concerned about as well (unless you're like… really really weak or something?).

Anyway.. hopefully that all convinces you and everyone else to get this ;P

        • +2

Total agreed on the SD slot and full size USB port which make a tablet really useful. Light, long battery life, able to backup photos from camera make it a very good replacement for a netbook.

        Read PDFs on the train
        Watch Movies
        Listen To music
Browse the Internet (with a portable wifi module) when in front of TV watching wife's boring series
        Play silly games
        …that's about it.
(I don't read/write email when on the move)

        • +2

ANY tablets can do the same things.

        • +3

          optus mytab FTW!!!

  • What's the resolution of the screen on this one? And how much does it weigh? "0.73 x" doesn't mean much to me…

    • +1

      resolution is 1280x800 pixels
      Weight is 0.73Kg

    • +2

1280x800 resolution screen… As for the weight; well, a simple comparison would be a 750ml bottle of coke

  • +1

Dear Bing, a humble suggestion. Just a small change on the sales pitch. The word "hurry" makes you look …uhm (clear throat) …desperate :P

    • +3

lol. No I only have limited stock. Tablets are hard to come by…

  • Is the processor dual core?

    • Yes it sure is

  • is it the one in JB-HIFI as well? tried it in store, the screen responds so……so………..so….not smooth…

    • +1

It was smooth for me, and TBH I don't think there should be much difference in performance between the Toshiba / Acer tabs since they have exactly the same CPU and GPU.

Maybe the tablet just needs a reboot, Android needs rebooting once every few days otherwise it starts lagging.

      • +2

Maybe true for the shop display models, but as a general comment I'm afraid that is pure BS.

  • Bring us the iPad2 at this price and we will praise you :)

    • +4

Ill praise myself if that was possible :)

  • +5

Stuff from Japan… In terms of overall quality, a Japanese product says it all.

And a USB port, which imho is one of the things that matter most for a tablet. With Amex it would make an awesome deal.

    • No more 'amex' available if you're not already registered!

  • With a USB port you don't even need the 3g function. Make a combination with the Virgin deal and its "when the best becomes better". And I'm not a Toshiba or Bing Lee staff in disguise lol.

    • can you explain this in details? how does the combination work out?

      • See the post below. I mean you can have the 3G with this one easier and don't have to pay 100-150 bucks more for the 3g function. No tablets out there have a USB port therefore force buyers to pay more for a 3G function.

  • What is the "Virgin deal"?

Bing Lee is there a shop in Sydney can I see this in store to have a look?

    • I don't know about the Virgin deal. Blackrider89 may want to explain it

U can visit any store in Sydney and they can show you

Here is a list of our stores for your convenience

      http://www.binglee.com.au/stores

    • http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51019 Or should I have referred to it as the Coles deal?

With a USB port you don't need the 3G function, which would be around 100-150 bucks more (seen with the iPad)

  • +1

Watch out for the sleep bug these Toshibas currently have. When the screen is asleep they dont like to wake up and you have to hold power button for 10 secs and reboot it to get it going again. They'll fix this in a future firmware but no word when as of yet, still stuck on 3.0.1. Might be safer with an Iconia/Xoom/Transformer with Honeycomb 3.1/3.2 already available.

    • -1

3.2 for iconia? officially it is released in Malaysia the 25 August.

  • +3

Combine with this AMEX deal to take price down to $399. BARGAIN!

    • NO CAN DO - "Maximum number of card holders registered"

    • Opps. Well, I managed to register mine. :-)

  • I use TPG at home and not usb mobile broadband, with this I assume no wifi so how do I get around using my internet at home with this tablet?
Sorry, I am not that good on these things and may sound stupid, just thought you guys can quickly help me =)

    • Im not sure Im understanding you but this has wifi so your TPG will be fine at home

      • +4

you can say that again :P

Im not sure Im understanding you but this has wifi so your TPG will be fine at home

  • i like the new hp touchpad running webOS better than this. just a personal opinion.
    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/html/touchpad.html?…

  • Do they have this in store?

    • We do. The price with free shipping only available on line

  • Is this 3G?

    • -4

      Yes it is

      • You must be kidding me. How can this one have 3G??? The price is good even with Wifi only though.

        • +6

I take that back. No. Sorry.. My bad

  • If it had 3G, I would take it!! When are the 3G ones being released??

  • Is it possible to hook this upto another Android Phone (Huawei 8300) via bluetooth to access the internet rather than Wifi?

    • +3

I don't know why it has to be bluetooth, but when I needed to access the net on this, I used my Google Nexus S as a mobile 3G hotspot - so, I connected the Toshiba to the phone using wifi to access the net.

      Hope that answers your question.

  • +1

Is there any way to tether these android tablets to an iphone?

    • +1

Absolutely. Easier than the other way around, from an iPhone to this Android device.

  • Why cant it have 3g? isnt having 3g a good thing, was just a question geez.

    • +3

      3G tablets cost more - geez…

    • Having the 3G option is nice, but personally I wouldn't recommend it.

You'll be paying a $100ish premium, then you need 2 separate data plans. Considering how easy it is to tether these days, and there's almost no situation where you'll have a tablet but not your phone… 3G is a somewhat superfluous option.

  • 10" Screen, Tegra processor, 1gb ddr2 ram, 2 full sized usb2.0 ports, honeycomb 3.0 = WIN.

    Good posst OP

  • Thank you for posting this!

Hardly Normal in Belmont WA price matched one of these for me 30 minutes ago. He also dropped $14($49->$35) off the price of the Toshiba cover for it.

He spent a couple of minutes guest checking out a unit to ensure it was legit. Also tried the usual 2yr warranty upgrade for $xx trick, which I declined.

A very good buy for $449. Worth it if you're as impatient as I am.

    • +1

Should be rewarding the companies who give good prices, not just forcing a price match from a place that charges rrp.

  • +1

Silly question perhaps : can you connect a 3G USB modem type E169 or other to this tablet ?

  • Cheers' just put my order through - hopefully postage will be quick have a little event next Thursday where this will be perfect!

  • my colleague has OfficeWorks price-match and got it for $440

  • I managed to register for the AMEX deal just now. I also signed up for the Bing Lee newsletter (5% off first purchase)..does this mean I can get it ultimately for $376.55?

    • That's exactly what I did. But it works out at $386.55 because you have to pay the $10 postage (couldn't see where to use multiple codes).

      • doh! I knew there'd be a catch! BingLee rep?

        • +1

I don't understand the catch? The coupon code is available to anyone that registers on our database. It is all over the website. U cannot use the coupon codes in conjunction with any other coupon code so you can opt for free shipping or if you want to subscribe to the database we email you the coupon code.

        • +1

Hardly a catch in my opinion, you can't use multiple codes, and that is fair enough, rep never said you could. Plus I think it's a great price at that. Hopefully it'll be a smooth process to get it here and all will be good.

  • +1

"U cannot use the coupon codes in conjunction with any other coupon code". There's the catch. I just asked online help and they said they didn't know - give it a go…Anyway, all moot as wife doesn't want me to buy it. She seems to think I have to 'need' a tablet, not just want one. Women.

    • If you register the terms of the coupon code are clear. My wife said the same thing to me too btw. But I still got one. I think I may be in the dog house now. At least Ill be playing on the tablet :)

      • +1

Oh, stop it. I value my testicles too much.

  • Rep, how long should the usual order take to process and ship, I notice I ordered it this morning at 9am and it's been sitting on "Processing" all day. Is it just one Aus Post shipment per day? was hoping your claim of having the unit in stock meant quick to ship.

    • The guys may have not updated the web just yet. Its in stock so worst case will ship Monday

      • Well now it's sat for another entire business day on the same status "Processing", how long does it take to ship one of these?

      • never mind, I contacted the online chat people and they confirmed it has shipped and website is not updated.

  • Paid $449 Cash at local store. Makes me think I could have got it cheaper!

  • I have seen the price at Hay market store is $499. Can I pay $449 to get one?

  • After I saw all the news on Toshiba AT200 Excite, I think I know why the price of AT100 is dropping.
