  • Hi Centrecom rep I have the same problem as ecross above, could you email me the invoice with my name&address on "Bill To" part? (Invoice# 00674805), thank you!

  • +3

received the laptop today! then found out 1 dead pixel! Disappointed :( Can i send it back and you guys send me a new one? I need it before next friday!

    • +2

me too, is it possible all of these have a pixel issue? cos that makes 3 of us and who knows how many others have not noticed them!

      • +1

I read few days ago here someone mentioned his one got 1 dead pixel in middle right side something and he took it back to sunshine store and they gave him a new one..

I am waiting for my laptop to be arrive, hope mine won't have deadpixel.

The problem is iam in Sydney and if a dead pixel there i have to ship it back to Melbourne and its a big hassle.

Hope mine wont have dead pixel.

How do you guys check the dead pixel? Did you guys put a white background Powerpoint presentation and see for it?

        thanks.

      • +1

All LCDs are prone to the odd dead pixel or two. Not sure what Centre Com's policy on dead pixels are but generally <3 is not warrant for a swap.

U can use windows paint also.

  • as I need it before next friday, a reply from the Rep is really appreciated!!! I will fly next Sat and it is a present for my gf:(
It's a nice laptop, my sis likes it even she is a mac fan :) Yes, to see the dead pixel clearly just switch the screen to black/white/blue! Just google "dead pixel test"…

  • Guys I completed the online redem, only received an email saying now they know it's been submitted. I assume there will be another email soon notifying the redem is approved?

    • yes, you got a confirmation email first and then will be notified if your claim is approved.

  • Thanks Skywise.

I also found T520 has a ridigulous partition that C has around 250gb while D is only 30GB. I know D supposes to be used to store/backup system file and important drivers files, but what's the point to get such a big C drive.

This creates headache of saving the majority of stuff in C drive in case i have to reinstall or format at a later stage when necessary. On all my other pcs I left C as system drive and put all personal data on D drive so I can always reinstall/format C without having to backup/restore personal data.

Also I learned that if I resize the volume formation the one-key-recovery wouldn't work, so nothing I could do, have to save all data with system files on C drive…really silly for Lenovo to configure drive like this in my opinion…

    • ….i just shrinked c drive and created one logical drive D:…. i am not sure if this will affect my one-key-recovery tho, but i read somewhere about something like if you use win7 system partition , the restore point should be fine. any clarifications?

      • Most likey OKR would not work. I read this from the Lenovo community, guys there suggested that once you re-size the volume it stops working…

I used to just format the whole drive, install windows and backup whole thing using 3rd party utility like Ghost, but it's time consuming so don't wanna do this…

        • well, i used to create the ghost image, but as you said, too many troubles for drivers installation etc. i think i would just send it back to restore it if anything happens

        • Don't worry about the driver… it is extreme easy to install, after you download the driver CD from the web. Lenovo did a good job on this!

        • Guys I mean we all know how to build the system and ghost the image, but in most case we don't wanna spend time on it like what we did. It's wired to partition a drive like this since this only adds trouble to customers in later stage.

Why Lenovo keeps doing this un-logic thing, may be too lazy to make another storage partition?

    • what u can do is go find this application
      http://www.partitionwizard.com/
it is an excellent hard drive partition tool get its free version
then u can divide ur C drive into several ones

dont panic if u get something wrong with ur partition , u can undo ur actions before apply them. After u apply ur actions, the computer will reboot and take a couple of minutes to do the partition for u

      have fun

      • i will leave it as it is now and do it when it stuffed

    • in ur case , i think u want merge the D drive first and then do the partition

  • called them today! out of stock so they can not replace a new one to me! I must send it back for warranty and it will take 2-3months…. I will keep it then :(

    • +1

maybe it will be back in stock? wish you luck

      • thanks! but I dun have enough time as I want to claim gst at the airport next friday! Anyway it is still very good deal and if the laptop has more than 3 dead pixels, I can bring to lenovo for warranty!

        • You do not need to bring THE laptop to the airport. Is that right? Bring another one instead and no one would know (of course if you have a spare one). They never check if I recall correctly. Still in good faith here.

        • @blackrider
You need to take THE item, as they check it compared to the receipt details once you get thru customs.

  • Hi GUys/Centrecom.

I am in sydney ordered the T520 and got it delivered today. It came with outside secure sealed one, however when i open the outside secure black wrapping sealled paper, noticed the box had been opened and put a clear tape on top of the Thinkpad tape.

it seems like i got a display one delivered to me.. I can clearly see the box had been already opened and retape it.

I asked the Online sales team leader i wanted an unopened brand new sealed unit in box, but seems like they sold me the display model or refurbished unit…

I didnt open the box yet.. I tried to ring centrecom the line is busy and sent an email.

Please help guys as i am disappointed as i expected a brand new one…other trouble is i am in Sydney…
I took a photo of the box how the sealled was and wanted to talk with someone from centrecom before i opened the box.

    Thanks

    • yeh… how about the platic wrapping around the laptop? If it's still sealed then it should be brand new! As when you open it, you will break the sealed sticker…

      • I haven't opened it yet, sent email to [email protected] ask me to reply or call waiting until that.

i can see the box is opened the original Think seal open and resealled…not sure…

How was your box before you open it? Did you have the box opened and reselaed with normal tape on top of the original "think" tape? Please confirm

After i open it let you know the laptop with plastic wrapping..

        thanks

        • +1

I'm in sydney too, my wife opened the box after it's delivered to home so I didn't know what it looked like when arrived. I'm not gonna ask anyway, as you said we are in sydney, if I don't know I'll assume it's a brand new one :D

      • Yes the "pink" security seal should be intact on the plastic bag.
very hard to open the bag without damaging the seal.

At the end of the day if it is working fine, without issues, is it worth worrying about?
It just feels like you got a "used" one though

  • thanks and let you know skytree after i open it tonight at home..

whats yuor email address, i dont know i am talkign about these in public forum here..

    mine is [email protected]

    will keep in touch

  • Seems like quite a few people have problem with the T520…dead pixels/fan noise/assembly quality…

  • Hi Guys,

Here is an update as i mentioned the box seems opened and resealled… I opened the box and the plastic wrapper in the laptop seal was broken too and seems like the laptop been taken out of the box..

However i checked the laptop for any scratch mark or finger print or dust, nothing its brand new and still has the brand new smell in it. The battery was in the wrapper with sealed tape. The instruction manual was also in the sealed bag.

I got instruction manual, power adapter, laptop. I didn't see any CDs with softwares?

Did you guys get any softwares?

I turned on the laptop it asked me the normal settings questions and the fingerprint setup also the norton update..

I could not see any dead pixels so far..

I am reasonably happy with the laptop.

Just a question guys, seems like the laptop been opened at lenovo? Any reason you guys can think of why they opened the laptop,as per the emial from centrecom they mention if the box been opend means it shuold hv been opened by Lenovo..

i checked the processor and it has 4gb ram and DVD RW..

I submitted for the claim for 600 and dint get confirmation yet, i uploaded the soft copy of the receipt..

    Thanks guys..

    • I guess it could be factory found something wrong and reworked the laptop or maybe just for repackaging with different language manuals etc but if the laptop is working fine and you have got 3 year warranty you don't need to worry too much about it.

      • But you'd think that the factory would be able to reseal it afterwards. Thats the whole point of the seal isn't it? So that people know that its only been handled in the factory…

    • Maybe opened by Australian Custom?

    • It might have been display stock as Centre Com did have one on display when I went there. However, this was in a glass cabinet and thus is pretty much brand new (although it was taken out of the box). If you're unhappy then I guess you have grounds for a refund but since you submitted the cashback claim I don't think you will receive one.

      • I think it had been opened by Centrecom and the online salesguy try to BS me saying it had been opened by Lenovo. If lenovo opened they should have reseal with Think tape not the local clear one..
The battery pack wasn;t install and the notebook has no scratch or mark still brand new smell.

The centrecom guy in email said they can't swap for anotehr one as they dont have stock if i found the notebook as used one..

Did you guys notebook come with any CDs?

        • No it didn't come with any CDs. If you want to format you can just do it from the recovery drive.

Also, it really just sounds like they had your one on display and repackaged it. It still is new, but they just had it in their glass cabinet for a while. Since you already claimed the cashback you're not likely to get a refund.

If I were you, I'd just keep it as you will NOT find a T series ThinkPad for this price anywhere.

  • Also got one with a dead pixel
    Dissapointed a bit

    • Hi Demarco,

sorry to hear the dead pixel.. what is your t520 built date, you can see in the box. may be the dead pixel relates with certain built date? What is your bios version

  • Hi All,
Got the notebook today, ordered Sunday, had to chase it up a bit as it was "pending" on the Paypal first, then waiting some other confirmation after the paypal confirmation, etc. however I am not surprised, it is a lot of money, and they probably got a lot of orders coming in.

Dispatched yesterday evening, got it today midday. All seals intact, brand new, unopened notebook.
No dead pixel, no issues with manufacturing defects. Display hinges quite stiff, just to be able to open it with one hand - it will hold display stably open in any position. High standard build quality as expected, no issues there. Could not comment on the fan cycling, as I could not here it due to office background noise.
Without any modifications the Windows Experience index is 4.7 (Processor 6.9, RAM 5.9, Graphics 4.7, Gaming 6.1, HDD 5.9). That is almost on paar with my (old) i7 E6510 and hence no issues with wrong processor frequency. BIOS v 1.25. The 4GB RAM is provided on one module, leaving another module available for upgrade - nice.

Submitted claim via Lenovo Money Tree, got confirmation email about them receiving the claim straigt away. Will see when the cash card arrive.

Invoice is for the total amount, no mention about the cash back. However the "Bill to:" has "WEB SALES" instead of my billing address, which I am going to follow up with Centre Com.

As a long time business grade laptop user (Currently Latitude E6510) I am quite impressed with the Thinkpad especially for this price(!). Believe or not here is a reason why the business lines cost double of the "home" lines. I do believe this was one of the best deals.

    • Yep - haven't had any problems with mine either apart from the buzzing which turned out to be the 'power on with fingerprint' feature that I disabled. I think only a small number of people are having issues and that is expected as dead pixels are a fairly common fault (with respect to other types of faults).

  • Mine shipped with bios 1.14 which is known to have fan cycling and cpu issues. Out of the box I only had a 3.4 score for cpu vs. 6.9 after update. The fan issue, pulse every 5 seconds, also resolved after it updated.
Could someone please time thier boot up, both to login screen and then to desktop after the circle stops spinning. Not sure if my rapid boot is functioning right.
Build quality otherwise is excellent as others have mentioned.

    • Mine takes from pressing power button to the loading icon stopping spinning 37 seconds. This was without the login screen as I took off the password and this was running on power.

      • just noticed your post..have you disabled anything at startup/removed any software? I disabled the toolbox, battery and wifi lenovo icons in the taskbar and with login it improved to 1 minute 12, without the password it takes 1 minute 1, which is still a long way from 37.

I updated all drivers and windows updates through toolbox so I'm not sure what it could be..do you have wifi on/off any other settings changed? thanks!

        • Are you sure they're not talking about models with a SSD when they say it can be as fast as 37 seconds to boot?

        • Wifi and everyone is on. It's set to performance on wall power. I haven't changed any other settings either; I've just installed a few basic programs and such.

      • well it seems that kheob gets these speeds with the regular hdd, i have read ssd was reported at 30 and the optimal for hdd is 37. I didn't think it would be anywhere near 37 though. At absolute best with password i get about 1 minute to 1 minute 10.

        Anyone else?

        • Yeah I'm using the Centre Com version with no changes of hardware.

        • How long does it take you to boot to the Windows 7 chime?

        • If you scroll down a bit I posted a video of mine booting up.

    • +1

Mine i checked it has 1.14 version of bios the built date is march 2011 something. I guess tm001 got the latest built T520 may be..

ZXCV, please advice me how toupdate the BIOS

Please put the link for the correct version

      thanks.

GOod thing is my T520 has no dead pixel

    Mostly happy with t520
    Sealed package
    Fan is quiet
    All the pixels look alive

Having a frustrating time mastering the trackpad - scroll is intermittent and course in it actions. Will have to see if their are settings to fine tune it. Most disappointing pointing device I've had for many years !

    • Hi Jirvin,

      thts good.

when did you order the laptop and what is your bios version? When is the built date, you can see in the box..

      thanks.

      • Ordered when the deal came out. Invoice says 19/8. Shipping delayed a few days waiting for bank tfer to go through. Will get back with build and bios details

    • I've found that the scroll is limited to the bottom half of the trackpad.

  • Hi GUys,

Another thing i noticed is when i open the laptop(not power AC connected) the finger print scanner green light blink, before turn on the laptop.

    is it normal?

    • You can turn it off under the fingerprint program in the Lenovo tools. It's called 'replace power on with fingerprint' or something like that.

  • +1

Yaa even it seems display model i can still see the new smell of the notebook and no marks or finger print. May be as kheob mention it was in the glass box so it looks good. No dead pixels..

I ordered the laptop when they open the sale again after they mentuon got stock again. It seems like they readvertised the stock only to sell this display model as i did order on monday 22nd..

overall i am happy with the notebook..

  • Another thing i noticed in lenovo thinkvantage toolkit on top says warranty expires on 24 March 2014, seems like it calculate 3yrs from the laptop built date which is 24 march 2011..

    how about others show?

    • Mine shows July 2014 but don't worry about that too much. You have your receipt to prove that you purchased it in August so you will be able to claim warranty up until August 2014.

      • Kheob

this means your one is recently last month built i guess. what bios version did you get? 1.14 or 1.25 the latest one?

how to check the system ratings processor, memory, graphics, gaming graphics ratings..

        • I'm not sure what version it was but I updated it to the latested one through the Lenovo Toolbox.

To check your rating, right click Computer, go to Properties, and click on Windows Experience Index.

        • Lenovo tool box as of the other day will only get it up to 1.27 (it will show you what version you have at the top of the toolbox home page). Unless yours was built after march and they addressed the issues with a hardware fix, it will still pulse unless you get 1.28.
what really baffles me is how some will only get a score of 3.4 and others 6.9 on the same bios version. N.B. power settings were on maximum so it wasnt that.

  • kheob,

mine with bios 1.14 version and got index 4.7( 6.9 for cpu, memory 5.9, graphic 4.7 gaming graphics 6.1, primary hard disk 5.9)

i havent updated the bios and how come some people here got 3.1 and got 6.9 for cpu only after update to bios 1.28,

can you please post the lenovo link here to get the latest bios verson file to load it..

is it risky to update the bios?

please post the link for the version of bios and instruction how to proceed.

    thanks.

    • Hi all,

Not sure why this is link is so hard to find, but i must of just been lucky the first time i found it. Took ages to find it again!
      http://206.17.82.2/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS01881…

Just make sure you have the battery in there with decent charge and plug in the laptop. Took all of 1 minute to install. Once it reboots it updates the controllers and the fans go full blast for about 10 seconds (i think this is where it fixes the fan pulse issue). In order to hear the fan pulse you really need a silent room or you have to hold up the fan to your ear. I'm almost certain all the ones built in march would do this. Not so sure about the ones built later on as they did update the hardware in later versions in seems.

I'm not sure if there are risks associated with updating bios or not, but it seems to be very quick and easy with the thinkpad software.

I couldn't stand the pulsing sound so I had to do it anyway.

Also as per my request above, could some one please measure boot up times if they have the time? Just from time of pressing button to login screen, and then to desktop fully loaded.
      THANKS!

      • took me 50secs tho but i have fairly amount of software installed

        • hmm not sure what is wrong with mine then, i only have office on mine and actually upgraded to 8gb ram so am bit dissapointed with the boot up time…not sure what i can do to improve it.

  • Does this actually have an esata port?

    • yea it does

      • Where is it? I think the place for an esatap (combo) port is on the left just behind the firewire port, but it is actually only USB.
I was hoping to use a cable like this (random link): http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_in…, once I've swapped out the dvd drive for a second hard drive. What am I missing? All the spec sheets for this model say it has one, but other documents say only models with discrete graphics have one. You can also see on that link the shape of an esata/usb combo.

  • Hi ZXCV,

thanks for the bios update instruction for 1.28.. It seems like we have to locate the file manually to update and i did notice the latest the thinkpad toolkit shows only 1.27..

You just saved the file in C drive and follow the instruction to update the bios? Did you have to change any ohter settings?

I notice the fan pulse in very mild sound.. Do you guys think this will lead any issues i mean fan pulse?

    thanks

    • I just downloaded it and installed the exe and followed the onscreen instructions.

      • I'm pretty sure I've got the older version of the BIOS but I've never had any problems with it. How many people are actually experiencing these problems? My fan can hardly be heard and the Windows Experience Index seems about right. Though I've yet to use mine in a silent environment.

        • I really dont know the noise i heard is fan pulse one. but as normal with other laptop i can see the cold air came out from the heat sink in left side of the laptop…

Someone can confirm how the fan pulse sound heard?

          Dan,

What is the buit date for your one? Is it march as well?

May be the fan pulse issue got laptop withold version of bios 1.14 gotlower scored?

  • Here's a link to a clip of mine booting to Windows. It takes about a second longer this time (~38s):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg_HTk6R1nA

I haven't modified any of the hardware and the OS is the Lenovo version that came on the ThinkPad. I've installed antivirus software, Office, Dropbox, Firefox, WoW, LoL, and a few other programs. I've also installed Rapid Boot but it didn't seem to make a difference. I haven't disabled any of the ThinkPad tools from startup.

With the loading circle, it stops in the video but it does come back up a few seconds later to load up some other processes. I didn't include it because the length of that extra loading would be dependent on how many startup programs you have installed.

This is just for people to compare to determine if there is a problem with their system or if there is a problem with mine.

    • thanks alot for that! the first thing i noticed was that your capslock light goes on very early compared with mine, i'm guessing some of my drivers are not booting up fast enough/correctly, but that is a hell of a lot quicker than mine.

I only have office installed and upgraded to 8gb ram. Any one have any ideas?

      • No worries. I've also disabled 'always on USB' in the BIOS. Not sure if that makes any difference though.

      • There is an update to bios through Lenovo system update, this may make some difference.

  • Sorry for reposting (see a few comments up), but has anyone actually used the esata port? I just can't see one. Where is it? It is listed in the specs for this model (see posting description etc…), and skywise replied and says it has one, but the Lenovo documentation says only discrete graphics models have it. I think the place for an eSATAp (combo/powered) esata port is on the left just behind the firewire port, but it is actually only USB. So my question is: where is it?

    • Thats the eSATA port. (USB/eSATA hybrid)

      • No, it isn't. It doesn't have the esata pins on the top, and it is only labelled USB, and it isn't the right shape. See the link in my post above.

        • Oh, it seems like it isn't then. I guess it just looks like one because the socket is designed to allow for eSATA but they don't put it in all models. Thats slightly disappointing… Oh well, its not something I use anyway.

  • one more request, could someone please open up msconfig (just type it in the start search bar and hit enter) and tell me what boxes are ticked in the "general" tab?
thanks all, given the t520 is so new its hard to troubleshoot stuff online, not much info out there.

  • Found a dead pixel, but one should be ok I guess…can't afford the time & energy spent on hassling the vendor for this.
My T520 indicates the battery is 4.5 hours after a full-recharge, is that normal? Someone here says 6 hours +???

    • Seems like 5 or 6 of the people got T520 got dead pixel. What makes the dead pixel visible.

I checked carefully mine doesnt have no dead pixel at all, only thing bit worried me was the box was resealled, but battery pack was in sealed bag..

i haven't updated the bios yet

does anyone fan plus issue resolved by the bios update form Lenovo toolkit which i do believe 1.27 version.

WHen is your laptop built date Skytree?

      thanks.

      • Must be before March since the bios verison is 1.14, however I got 6.9 cpu rating. I don't know if I should go ahead and update the bios since the fan pulse seems not annoying me, i'm not always in a quiet room…

        • Hi Skytree,

Mine is 24 March 2011 built date with 1.14 bios version and i got exctly 6.9 cpu rating(no idea why some people got here below with 1.14 version)..
I can't hear the fan pulse and i haven't upgraded to latest bios yet.

Is there any problem with te fan pulse other than annoying?

        • From my research it only says fan pulse and low cpu rate, but I think I would upgrade after a while, making sure 1.28 is a good one to go. Some bios found itself having prob after some days…

  • Just got off the phone to Lenovo regarding the discount, and he was adamant that the $600 discount for this laptop (42402CM) ends on the 18th September, and will not revert back to $200 come 1st September…!

    Any thoughts on this?

  • As per the money tree site it says the cashback for 42402cm is 600. The dude from lenovo may not aware this?

I did redeem my claim for 600 on last friday, still i haven't got the confirmation for the 600 card yet. I did upload the soft copy…

    • That's not what I wrote…he was well aware that it was $600, but it was whether this $600 cashback ended at the end of August or the 18th Sept (as on Lenovo Incentives) that I was questioning. The Lenovo rep was sure about it being $600 cashback until 18th Sept, not until 31st August.

  • I am curious what is the main reason Lenovo gives out 600 cashback only for preconfig laptops from resellers, not freshly customized ones online from lenovo site..

    • Lots of stock on hand so they have slashed their RRPs to offload them to resellers who in turn should be selling them cheaply. Although not many of them are because a couple of resellers I called wouldn't budge from their $2500 sticker price!!!

      • Yeap…

I try to pricematch and get here in Sydney, non of them wanted to talk about it below 1900.. Haris technology price is 2499, Penta 1899 and ARC they have no stock they told me its end of line..

Only centrecom sold it for 1199… I noticed in online a week ago for the base T520 was 1899 and now its 1199 for customized one.. seems lenovo reduced the price and these HT and otehr stores dont want to reduce from sticker price 2499

The dude @ Haris technology said Lenovo T520 is bulky and he suggested me the HP Probook when i inquire the price..
