Was looking for a high capacity 2.5" laptop sized drive for the Unifi Cloud Key G2 from the Wireless1 deal, and found this to be around $100 cheaper than buying locally. Could be good value for those looking to max out the capacity in their laptop or anything that is restricted to 2.5 inches. Just be aware that this has a thickness of 15mm.

I did it to two of them so I got 8 tb at less than one of these

      That's a 3.5", this deal is for a 2.5" drive.

      • oh nos, yeah my bad. I only looked at the pic and price.

  • Damn, even if it is a decent deal, so overpriced when we got the same 2.5" form factor drives in the WD my passport's. Just they aren't shuckable because they are DICKS.

Yeah definitely check on the thickness, since so many laptops started going for slim line hard drives.

Get a portable drive for $179 and shuck it, save you another $35

should note all WD 2.5's are soldered; only seagate are shuckable.

Yes, it's a shucking state of affairs from WD

  • May I ask why you would want so much storage in a unifi key? Keeping decades worth of stats?

    • Unifi protect storage

    • That’s right, the new UniFi cloud key G2 can also manage UniFi video cameras, so the storage is used for the footage.

      • That's good too know mate, really good to know actually.

  • I do not know why portable 2.5 HDD such as Seagate back up plus all the time cheaper than 2.5 internal HDD ( same capacity ) , if I buy portable and take out HDD will it be the same quality as external one ?
    Thanks

If it was an Ironwolve, I'd have said, go the internal instead of shucking, but it's a barracuda. So, same same.

      • Thanks , so next deal I get the portable one .

  • I had one of these only lasted 4 months and it died.

  • 3 of these…. 3 usb caddys…. Raspberry pi 3… and OpenZFS.

We're talking a very cheap nas server….. Hmm.

Usb is a bottleneck, but raidZ1 will be able to feed 1 to 3 users I think just fine, watching stuff.
