Fantastic deal. I only just went in June, but now tempted to go back!

  • OP, January is school holidays. You're unlikely to get cheap fares then. Not bad pricing. A bit more than I paid a few months ago for the same period, but realistically you can't complain about those prices. Before Jetstar, getting to Japan used to be $1500+ from Brisbane.

Yeh it's a long shot but at the moment tourism is massively down in Japan, as is evident by the multiple Japan sales Jetstar has had in the last few months. I'm going at the end of January and coming back in mid february so still a chance.. If not I'll just book them at full price closer to the date.

      • Fingers crossed for you.

        • Haha cheers ;-) Just did a search of ozbargain for jetstar japan sales and they have actually had sale fares for late Jan/Feb for the last couple of years. From what I could tell the sales have been in November or December. So I'll wait til then and see how I go.. as long as the several day periods which I can depart or return in doesn't get booked out I'm in no rush!

hummm, Syd-Kix or NRT $349 - it's not cheap among their previous sale prices.
and if you add extras (meals, 20kg and entertainment etc), then it will be nealy reaching $900, which is not much different from full service career's sale price. and you will pay other extra fees such as credit card surcharge, seat advance booking fees…. They were better in the past but getting more like Enrope's cheap & nasty LCC who charge every single items.

Not bargain for me. It's just another small sale to me.

    • Yeah they charge large amounts for any extras, but it is a stupidly cheap flight that travels halfway around the world for only a few hundred dollars… I wouldn't exactly expect primo service.

Just do what I did. Pack light, (Japan is pretty cheap. You can conceivably buy anything you forget to pack over there), Pack your own dinner and snacks, bring a book to read and sleep on the plane. The seats are comfortable enough for the long haul.

      • how come i heard everything in japan is quite expensive?

        • +6

It was, before our dollar turned green and started smashing things.

        • +2

I think that saying is a general holdover from the days when Japan was really, really expensive (it has been in a bit of a economic depression for a long time) and our own Australian Dollar was much lower than it is now.

I tended to find general food and eating out there was cheaper than here. General electronic goods and the like was about the same. Accommodation tended to be quite expensive (Probably the same as here), although I mostly stayed in Hostels which made it pretty cheap.

        • i lived in Japanfor 4 years. it's cheap if you know how to get cheap.

dollar hasn't really changed much. its been stable for the last 7 years against the yen.

it used to be on par with the US$ but strangely moved away from it.

For uber cheap accomodation for 1 you stay in internet cafes and sleep in the comfy chair in the private booth. about 1000 yen.

You get a higher radiation dose from a flight between Melbourne and Brisbane than you would staying a few weeks in Tokyo.

I think this comic demonstrates a reasonably good idea in laymans terms.

      http://xkcd.com/radiation/

You can look up some actual scientific sources to back it up if you're really that worried.

    • +1

This is ridiculous. If you are going to listen to crap like this, you will never leave the house. Stop being so scared of the world, and get out there. You are a 100,000 times more likely to die in a car crash, but i bet you still drive?

    • +1

Independent monitoring of radiation levels is conducted around the country by private citizens and laboratories. The results are online and you're welcome to review them if you wish. Tokyo has not been turned into a radioactive wasteland. Pull your head in.

Ahhh this is the sale I used in 2009 to go to Japan on the 1st of December stayed with my friend for 1 month free then came back after new years full fare but still worked out to be a great saving (^_^)

  • Pity its one way only

    • +5

It's not only one way. For some weird reason jetstar always says on their site that the sale is only one way, but when you actually do a search for the dates return during the sale period you will see they are cheap on both legs. They are actually cheaper on the return leg!

I neg anything to do with Jetstar. The WORST company I've had the displeasure to deal with. Complete disregard to customer service. (I'm not referring to flight experience which was ok)

    • yes they suck

    • I'm not big on them either. They spilled some fizzy drink over my shirt once, and didn't even apologise. In fact, her exact words were 'Oops, I'll get some you paper towels' as if it was my bloody fault that she poured the drink onto me. Came back a minute later and chucked some paper towels towards me and walked on as if nothing happened.

Fair comment - you dont like Jetstar, and complain and make your point like you have done. We all have had bad experiences with some business and in some cases more than 1. BUT read our guidelines on voting before voting like this again. Misuse of vote and revoked

Another Jetstar Japan sale that doesn't have an option of Sydney to Tokyo.

I'd love to go to Japan right now, but they never have Sydney to Tokyo, it's only ever Osaka.

    • +3

Which is even better than Tokyo anyway. I lived in the Kansai region (IgaUeno in Mie PRefecture) for 10 years and trips up to Tokyo were boring. Osaka gives you easy access to Kyoto, Nara, Tobu, etc. And you can always catch a bullet train up to Tokyo for around 10,000 yen anyway. If you have a JR pass, all but the Nozomi service is covered as part of it regardless.

    • +2

To be fair, Osaka is actually a better entry point to Japan unless you plan on spending time ONLY in Tokyo. Osaka has a better airport, and is more centrally placed in Western Japan for all the cool stuff foreigners (ie us) want to see, like Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, Nagasaki etc. Mt Fuji is closer to Tokyo, but if you take (say) a week in Japan and buy the JR rail pass you can base yourself in a hotel in Osaka and make bullet train day trips to anywhere you like.

Edit: Bah, post above me said basically all the same stuff and three minutes earlier. I should add that I recommend tourists enter Japan via Osaka even though in all the time I lived in Japan I actually hated Osaka and much preferred Tokyo.

    • +1

See if you can tee up a flight from Sydney into Osaka, and a return flight from Tokyo to Sydney. That's what I did last time.

If you get yourself a JR Rail Pass (Needs to be purchased prior to flight) you can take the bullet trains all over Japan and stay in different areas along the way.

I originally worked my way east from Osaka on arrival, then headed back West to Tokyo, where I flew back home.

Highlights to see are definitely Kyoto and Hiroshima, which are very close to Osaka.

    • There is a discounted fair for Sydney -> Tokyo; JetStar just doesn't advertise it for some reason. Search for it on their site and you'll find that both legs are also discounted to about $350 each :)

Do you guys think travelling to Japan when they are in Summer or Winter (or seasons between) is best? I was thinking about going when they are in Summer, but I've never been before.

    • +1

Late spring and early autumn are the best. It's too cold in winter and too hot in summer.
In other words: april - may and october-november would better times to go.

    • +1

Depends what your going for. I am going in Jan/Feb to see the country but also to ski in some of the best snow in the world. If you just want to go to see the country then like bob19 said, spring or autumn.

    • Summer is hot and humid on Honshu. It's a great break from southern Australia's winter. If you're sensitive to heat however you won't have a good time. Early to mid Autumn can still be quite warm, around 25C to 30 in Tokyo/Osaka.

In mid summer Hokkaido is very nice with mid 20s temperatures and no humidity.

  • +3

    summer = VERY Hot

    • And humid!

Ahhh I love it. Nothing like escaping from a cold Brisbane winter to the hot mugginess of Japan in their summer. Wish I could go again this year.

    • +1

      and short skirts everywhere!

  • I went twice last year and loved it both times, my advice is you have get out of Tokyo/Osaka if you have time. most of japan is only a bullet train ride away. Its not as expensive as you may think Hostels cost $17-35 a night, Traditional guest houses $80-$220 a night. I dont eat seafood so I survived to chicken curry with rice around $6 local beer is $2 500ml, head massage & ear cleaning is $50 (dont ask how I know this)

  • Just entered details to leave on the 12th of december from melbourne to narita and noticed the price is still the same. Checked back through the timeline and it appears the travel period for the sale dates end on the 30th of November. Pretty weird specially when it is advertised as travel period ending 14/12/2011.

  • What? I'm selecting cairns to narita for the 13th Dec and its not working. The travel period is till the 14th…whats going on here.

  • -5

haha, I am not going to goto Japan with all the radiation everywhere in the air, food & water. You would have to be insane to travel there just to save afew dollars.

Best way to save money is forget the idea of a holiday completely, you have the internet, free documentries etc, you don't have to go out and see the world, this is a modern phenomena in existance for perhaps the last 50 years, going on oveseas holidays destorys your savings, any serious person in here would be against it.

The best way to double your money when shopping is fold your note in half and walk out.

    • "The best way to experience life is to simply not experience it at all!" - freemoneyhunter

      • travel documentries are to travel as masturbation is to sex

  • Sydney -> Narita = $379!!!
Just got my ticket!! Good thing I waited a few months…

  • Don't forget to buy you rail pass before you go to Japan.

unlimited shinkansen (bullet train) rides for x number of days (depending on seating availablity).

This is soooooooo much cheaper than buying shinkansen tickets individually in Japan.

If I was planning on touring around Japan then I wouldn't visit without one of these.

    • +1

They're around $300 if anyone was wondering.

      • that's for a week pass

which is well worth it as a one way trip from tokyo to sendai is about $120

        for some good info-
        http://www.infomapjapan.com/access_railway.phtml

        • That can't be right. $1000 for a 21 day pass? oh man…I think I'm gonna have to stick to buying the tickets when I need them.

        • 21 days for $1000. if you want to do a lot of travel in Japan then it is the onlyway to go.

check out the price of a shinkansen trip from tokyo to hiroshima- one way is $224. then you have to get back. hiroshima will occupy 2 days of your time max.

$1000 for 21 days well worth it. you can cover a hell of a lot of distance very quickly. bus travel in japan is so slow. even driving is hellishly slow and even then is expensive with the toll roads. regular trains are exceedingly slow.

21 days for $1000. value for money.

my 2 cents , and I lived there for 4 years.

        • +1

If you work out when you'll be travelling, it may be slightly cheaper to get shorter passes for a week or so at a time.

It seems very expensive at first glance, but if you think about it it's a stellar deal. Especially since one way fairs are around $300 in themselves.

It helps if you remember that Shinkansen travels incredible distances, very fast. Think of it as if you could buy unlimited pass to airline travel in Australia.

      • As Isometricbacon says - definitely book what you need. i.e. 7 , 14,21 day pass
it's fast, comfortable and they serve beer.
nothing is cooler than travelling up to 300 km/h past Mt Fuji and drinking beer.

  • if you read mx today - there is offer for hotel in tokyo for $51 pernight share.
