  • interesting link.

also this from the US -http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51326

  • haha was just about to post this. Are they even worth it?

    • Damn, tried HN QV before 2pm and then went to Preston, only to miss out by 2 people in the queue… Anyone got a spare they want to offload, please PM me.

  • Online? Or in store only?

    • +12

      In-store only. :-(

I have just returned from Harvey Norman Martin Place. They started selling at 1.20pm. 16GB were spoken-for by 1.35pm. 32GBs were all spoken-for (and queue, beyond cut-off mark, broken up) by 1.50pm.

      A few pix for you:

…and a video of the security guard trying to turn people away after they'd sold out:

So, did I manage to photograph any OzBargainers? :-)

      • +2

LOL @ the queue being mainly suits who could probably afford the full price.

        • +3

Not sure what wearing a suit has to do with capacity to pay - I've seen suits cheaper than some jeans + tshirt + sneakers combos. But I was certainly suited-up in that queue.

Show me a 9.7" digital photoframe with capacitive touch, S-IPS display, 32GB on-board storage, WiFi, Flickr/Picasa ready (etc) for le$$.

And yes, I could have afforded one before. But there's NO WAY would I have bought one at $599…but at $148. Simple value proposition in the end.

  • Just rang my local HN and it is indeed true! Glad I didn't get one of the american ones in the other thread! $98 is an absolute steal! Fingers crossed android does get ported to it. Even if it doesn't $98 is not much money for what will be a good couch web browser!

  • +4

as good as it at this price. it's practically useles now…

the only reason to get this is to HOPE the "community" ports android over otherwise, its a bit of a waste of 100 dollars

    • +4

chances are they will port it over. if you do some searching on "touchdroid" you will see that a lot of progress has already been made. and now with so many people buying them for so cheap there will be a larger incentive for developers to keep trying. and for $99 where else could you find a tablet of the same build quality for simple browsing or email?

    • +1. there will likely be no further apps or app updates..

  • If you've already got an iPad, is there any reason to get this? I'm trying to justify buying one lol

    • If you've already got an iPad, is there any reason to get this?

      probably not…

i'm still wondering whether it's worth getting one of these now, or just putting the $100 aside and get an new iPad 3 next Feb ???

      • With the rumours of the iPad 3's screen resolution being reliable, I'd wait. It's going to be amazing.

    • +7

Well you could return the ipad and buy 6 of these!

  • OK, cheap… but… where are the spec's already…

More heat & excitement… for all too few (if good) stocked items.

(People went ga-ga over HP Servers a few months ago… &
are still waiting for "mid-Sep" deliveries of the same.)

  • damn! going to harveynorman to get one.. hope theres stock!

  • ZDNet reporting the same as well

    http://www.zdnet.com.au/harvey-norman-holds-touchpad-fire-sa…

About to head down to the store - wish me luck

    • got one - 32gb for $148

      limit 1 per person

Anyone know if any Harvey Norman's in ACT have stock?

  • +3

everyone who ordered from overseas in the rush will be regretting it now?

    • I am :(

      • Cancelled my Amazon order and just got mine from HN!

        • Why vote me down?

  • So, just to confirm, they are going on sale today after 2pm?

Reason I ask is because, I just called my local HN and they said they have not got a confirmation yet??? Should I just check in the store after 2PM today???

  • Ah damn…stuck at work!

    • +7

      quicksand ??? Call 000

  • just called Harvey Norman…rude bastard said they couldnt confirm anything till 2pm.

    • +1

probably means it's true! I'm going to head down and check it out, reckon the family will like it

  • it's comfirmed… just rang up harvey norman at brown plains and they got approximately 100 in stock.

    • big line?

      • +6

        twisted copper, so not really.

  • are there 3G models or just WIFI?

    • only wifi

      • thanks :)

  • Beware of HP consumer products fire sale. HP is going out of business on consumer products, see http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/hp-a…

Not sure what will happen to warranty or parts or support if they sell the electronic consumer business.

    • +2

Not sure what will happen to warranty or parts or support

They are still legally required to meet their warranty obligations…

      • Correct, they will be still legally responsible (or may transfer to the purchaser of their computing business). They are selling off their computing/mobile business. Not closing down. Big difference.

    • +1

Chill mate. Its a 100 bucks.

    • Actually.. if you read the article properly - they are saying they MAY sell out the PC department or spin it off as another business. But they are not wrapping up the PC business entirely overnight like what everyone is saying.

"In a dramatic reshuffling, Hewlett-Packard says that it will discontinue its tablet computer and smartphone products and MAY sell or spin off its PC division"

  • ANyone one to help me get one? I'm overseas. Will pay $$ for help! Thanks!

    • HN said it's strictly limit 1 per customer though…

    • +22

Sure post up your credit card details and I'll pop down to the shops for ya

      • Too funny. Was a serious offer but hey, take it any way you want. :-)

        • Mine was a serious offer too. I don't accept IOU's :-)

        • It will probably only be 1 per customer so I dont like your chances.

        • So at most you're out of what, $100? Someone will gladly take it off your hands. Want paypal in advance? NP if you're serious.

  • +2

I have rang up HN Preston and they said nothing had been confirmed by the head office and that there is no sale today, confusion+++

  • Hmmm tempted … I guess it's all about whether Android happens for it.

I see all the accessories are being sold off too - any must haves that people see?

  • +3

LOL Just checked HN More Park - Before I ask, the guy already guessed my question LOL - He said "Yes we got lots of call today"

HN More Park - got stock. I dunno how many.

  • I have a iPad 1 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Do I need one of these too?

    • +6

I have every tablet except this. do i need one for my toilet?

      • +23

only if you are anal retentive…

        • +3

          +1 for that comment…

        • +1

is that the same as "tight ass"?

        • +4

or if it's that time of the month, and you're in need of more pads.

    • +2

If you like to collect various tablets and have a spare $98 it might worth to buy

    • +1

Only if you sell one. No one needs three tabs…

      • That's a pretty big tablet to swallow.

  • Any news on the Knox City store?

    • Rang up Knox and Nunawadding stores… out of stock sad face

      • Yes, I just did the same with the same sad result. Chirnside Park sold out too.

  • bought one :)

    • How its not 2pm yet?

      • +4

        WebOs Time Travel App…

      • true, there was huge line up in martin place

    • +6

you bought one and you didn't give a pos vote to the deal?

      for shame. :|

      • +2

I bought one before I read this post :)

  • +1

Just called up my local Harvey Norman in Cannington, WA. The sale is starting at 12pm here, stores have plenty of stock.

    • Thanks for that. Will pop down in a sec :)

    • DAMN
Was heading down to my local HN for 2pm and then came across this post. All 50 at that store sold out in minutes apparently.

  • Called up Campbelltown, said they would call me back soon about it…

If it's true I'll gladly pick one up for $98.

  • What are these like compared to Optus Prepaid Mytab? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48502

    • +1

No comparison. Mytab is just an oversized phone. Low res and slower

      • at least mytab has 3g modem, and plenty of usefull apps ;)

        • +3

          Size matters.
Well thats what my girlfriend says…

        • +4

@ch4rgd lol … agree, but don't forget that thickness matters too :p
and above all … autonomy! hp may be fast but mytab lasts long :)

    • +1

The hardware of this is WAY better.. but the software side is dead. There will be no further upgrades and very little software to install until/unless Android is successfully ported across.

  • +1

Just got home with mine :)
First impression….android is better. Good price tho! and no long wait from the US :)))

    • nice quick work! 1 per customer?

  • 5 people from my work are going to the local Harvey norman to pick up 5. lol

  • +1

Sweet, Im gonna head down to my local HN and pick myself up one of these bad boys ^_^ Been waiting to get a cheap Tablet and its come true :O

  • A Million Dollar Question:

QV Melbourne CBD HN will jack up this sale too? :)

    • QV has sold out apparently.

Doesnt seem like there was much stock available.

      • it was expected!

        Pity those lining up there:(

        • its just sold out. as in 2.30

        • According to the news, it has started selling from 1 PM, by 1.20 the 16gb is sold out, then by 1.32 the 32gb is sold out.

    • wwhat do you mean jack it up?

    • Melb QV has bad reputation on any HN sale!

they always run out of stock, no sale, no price matching UNLESS you try really really really hard + threaten!!

  • what can you do to it besides web browsing and email?

    • you can put a cut-out apple logo on the back of it. that's about it.
