    • Thanks for the installation video! Needed that

    • nah, al bundy's kaiser airconditioner is the best

  • Apparently there’s 6 at $199ea at the Canterbury, NSW store too.

How do you find stock available at stores (stock check)? Or did someone go into the store and count them for you?

      • maybe because Ashfield and Cantebury aldi are 4km apart , and he visited both stores ?

        • +2

But if he visited both stores himself, then why would he say “apparently” for one of them?

          • +1

@caprimulgus: I put the same post into a local Aldi Facebook group and someone replied stating that they saw it also discounted to $199 at Canterbury.

Went this morning. It's $200 and they have many units. Only that they are the 2kw machine and not the 3.4kw machine at Ashfield. So 700BTU instead of 1200BTU if that matters to people.

      • 700BTU = not much

      • I went an hour ago and they had 8-9 12000btu marked at $244. Wonder if they scan cheaper.

      • I almost got one from Aldi Hillsdale, stopped when I saw the 7000BTU

These are great. Last around a year before you need to get it serviced and then find out it is cheaper to throw out and start again.

Portable ACs suck in general. If you have any choice whatsoever, get any other built in type of AC. It's well documented

      • +1

It's just wierd that they don't make portable airconditioners so that they they work properly with two hoses so that they're sealed into the space their cooling …

        • Not really, if they could slap 'air conditioner' on a turd and sell it to you they would. In the presence of consumer protections, this is the next best thing

        • +2

I'm looking into doing a hack job on mine to make it a 2 hose job, just need time to do it.

Otherwise the portable AC unit I have does a pretty dang good job of cooling my room down.

The government effectively banned many types of window air conditioners (e.g. the skinny types which are perfect for sliding windows) due to a new energy efficiency standard, as well as portable split system air conditioners (with flexible hoses) because the hoses would easily leak gas if kinked and contribute to global warming.

They EXEMPTED portable ACs from the energy efficiency regulations.

I bet you the net result is many times more energy WASTED by these exceptionally wasteful units than ever would have been wasted by skinny air conditioners.

          • @mubd1234: Can you give more info on those "banned" aircons?
I am sure you can still buy them if you look hard enough.

          • @mubd1234: I thought they were banned due to safety concerns (falling out of windows and hurting/killing people).

            • @bargain ben: Nah, you can still buy regular ('landscape') window air conditioner units. Skinny A/C units ('portrait') - ideal for sliding windows in apartments - are no longer sold because they don't meet energy efficiency standards - the same reason killed dual hose A/Cs (see @bamzero's comment below)

@mubd1234: Yeah but that still doesn't explain why they don't just make a portable with two hoses for air flow temprature exchange.

I mean you could do it yourself with a window unit, a vacuum fan and some ducting. Air goes in the side vents and out of the back of the air conditioner unit and now it works properly … I guess you'd need a Y-splitter thinking about it. It would be noisy as (profanity) though.

They do, however they became unsaleable here because of government regulations in 2011. Basically they couldn't meet efficiency standards yet for some reason single hose portables were exempt.

Fortunately it seems a slight bit of sense has come to the government finally and changes have been made to the regulations.

With any luck, come April 2020 we should start to see a reversal whereby dual hose become the norm and single hose units fade away.

Bit of reading about it here (findings that make you think, tell us something we don't know)

"In a recent study, the USA’s Department of Energy (DoE) estimated that simply upgrading a single duct portable to a double duct configuration would dramatically increase the performance at little cost. The DoE found the addition of a second duct that uses outdoor air to cool the condenser would yield an efficiency gain of 103 per cent for a retail price increase of around US$8."

what sort of servicing are you referring to, I used one of these for nearly 5 summers and not even having to drain a single drop of water. If it works then it works otherwise send it back to aldi for a free replacement.

      • i'm also curious as why the need to be serviced

      • Maybe they got a did unit, but the way these portable air cons work is incredibly inefficient.

  • I bought a portable and converted it to a dual hose. Cooling impact is night and day. Convair CP15HW1

Wasn't too hard to do. Just bought and extra hose outlet from ebay and a bit of handy work to connect hose to the second outlet.

    • +1

I am newbie to portable AC. What do you mean by a second outlet?

When you have time, would you mind posting some images please?

I bought a portable and converted it to a dual hose

I was just musing above that you could easily do this with a window unit, just run air into the sides and out the back with a decent radial fan.

  • The biggest mistake people make with these is tipping them over/moving them roughly and then not allowing enough time for the refrigerant to settle before starting the compressor.
They can be quickly damaged by incorrect use.

    • +1

That and not extending the exhaust hose outside, so it becomes a fan…cooler air one end and warm air the other.

  • I saw a couple of reverse cycle inverter split systems 2.5kW 12000BTU 5.5 star cooling/heating for $349 (reduced from $499). Is that a good deal?

  • Too hot now, need one affordable aircon now!Anybody know where can get best price for this around Rockdale NSW area?

    • +1

Rockdale aldi has 1x 700 btu for $249

      • Thanks

  • No Stock left in Aldi Ashfield or Rhodes.
Is there any stock at other places in Sydney?

  • For the record these things are absolutely terrible I can only explain my experience but here it goes
I have one currently purchased it on 3 December and it's going back tomorrow under its 60 day return policy.

The moment I turned it on the vibration from the compressor was so violent I thought it had to be defective after about five minutes it becomes pretty much normal in terms of portable air-conditioner. But the moment the compressor turns off you're in trouble especially if you're sleeping or pretty much doing anything that isn't listening to music extremely loud.
I'm sure by now I've been woken up dozens of times because when the compressor comes back on it is extremely loud. And I mean louder than a power drill.

Now let's talk about the critical design issues the horizontal louvres on the front will literally just fold completely down once the unit is at temperature when the unit is warm and off they seem quite firm but once it gets cold good luck.

The biggest problem… the air flows out on an extreme left angle would be a problem for most I was okay with it because it directed the air towards my bed but it literally directs the cold air back into the air intake on the top left hand side. Therefore it's extremely inefficient and that power rating on the box would be total nonsense. But worst of all even when the units set to 16° because the temperature sensor sits in that top left ear intake where the cold air is getting blown into it will turn the compressor off even when the room is still hot.

Also the plastic used to make the filter looks to be lower quality than McDonald's toys. I purchased this at full price as well at $379
