I'm sure this would be attractive to some people, but seriously why would anyone buy a 3GS right now??

  • +11

beware that an 8GB iphone 4 is probably just around the corner. 3GS is nearing end-of-life.

    • How do you figure that???

      • Its being widely reported, along with the stories of iPhone5 launch. Sept being talked of.

Also being reported that the price of the 'cheap' apple will be such that it doesn't look daft against the Android competition. However it is apple, so no idea if it will happen. Either way, worth waiting a short while.

    • Probably true, however would expect it to be priced similarly to the current 3GS 8GB at $719

      • -3

No, the rumour is that it's US$200 out right so it will be AUD$300 max.

        • +4

I think it's pretty unlikely it'll be that cheap. While the rumour of a cheaper iPhone makes sense, one thats three times cheaper than the other models seems a bit excessively so.

        • +1

I am not sure what you are referring to but at that price for an iPhone, it is most likely on a 12 or 24 month plan.

          Do you have a link?

  • +5

    this is so 2009

  • +7

you can get cheaper brand new 16GB 3GS unlocked on ebay

    • -6

      for example? link?

  • -4

iOS 5 is supposely not going to be supported on 3GS.

    • +2

      wrong, it is supported

    • +1

It is supported but it would be a hell of a job, because 3Gs has slower cpu

      • Even Msn is a bit over the top for a 3G iPhone…

      • Not really. The OS itself really shouldn't be a lot more demanding than previous releases if it's coded well. Certain applications could have issue on a case by case scenario. Its not like iOS 5 is bringing a radically different UI that required heaps of 3D effects or anything over iOS 4.

        • Theoretically this is true but realistically each new version of iOS has added new features which will require extra resources. I think the iPhone 3GS which has 256MB of RAM will struggle to run iOS 5 just like the iPhone 2G and 3G (128MB RAM) struggles with iOS 4.

        • +1

Possibly, but I think the extra 128MB of ram over the 2G and 3G gives it a fair bit more breathing room. It won't be as good as an iPhone 4 or 5 naturally, and it'll be missing the odd feature here or there but I think overall it won't be too bad.

I'm unsure if anything in 5 is likely to have as much impact as multitasking in 4 did. The Cloud based additions and notification systems etc shouldn't be too overly hungry.

I'm just guessing however…I'm sure if we google we can find someone who has tested the beta on one already.

    • and is that your own supposition?

  • +5

Must have had some sense of humour… 459 bucks for that device lol.

    • +9

      BRING DOWN TO $98!!!

      • eh!? still not back from the HN $99 HP TouchPad?

  • Asa79 its definitely supported on the 3GS I saw a demo view running. It missing a few features but it is supported.

  • +1

    $459 for a 8GB 3GS isn't a bargain IMO.

Better off paying the extra couple of hundred for a 4G with 16GB and retina display.

From http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1348182. The ip4 is going for around $650 to $700 which is way better value than a 3gs at $459 and so close to its end of life.

Edit: If I was to buy an iphone, this would be a better deal.
Vodafone ip4 16GB $764: http://shop.vodafone.com.au/mobile-details/apple-iphone-4-16…. 10% extra discount with moneybackco (not sure if this works for apple products? http://www.moneybackco.com.au/merchants/Vodafone-Handsets/) + I think vodafone unlocks for free?

    • Well it ain't 4G..and the new iPhone will not run on 4G network
      Either

      • He probably means 4G as in 4th Generation. Anyhow, while its speculated the iPhone 5 won't use a 4G network it's still just speculation.

  • +3

Are they still making the 3GS or have they uncovered some old stock from somewhere?

  • +15

hell i wouldn't buy an iphone 4 for 429. paid 340 for nexus s and loving it

seriously? optus lock? 1 per customer? so tempted to neg but no fault of OP

    • +3

This 'deal' is strictly for people who must have an iPhone. Any iPhone. Doesn't matter if it's two generations old (by September) and for some reason, have a deep distrust of online shopping.

Other than that, the rest of us will stand back and laugh. "1 per customer?" AHahhaaha. Throw in an extra hundred bucks or so and you could have picked up the unlocked Galaxy S II in that great deal last month.

  • +4

a good sign that they are in clearance mode and new models are getting closer

  • -5

its a great deal! becuase if you have a fault with the phone apple will replace it with a iphone4 as they no longer stock 8gb at all
** Just been informed this is no longer the case! so not a good deal!!**

  • +4

This isn't a very good deal. Yes it's cheap for a 3GS when comparing with other retailers and yes it's okay if you're an apple fanboy, but really you can get MUCH better for $429. I recently bought a Huawei Sonic for $189 the other day at DSE. It's unlocked, has a 600mhz Qualcomm CPU, 256mb ram, a 3.2MP camera and a 3.5" capacitive screen, and, a big plus is that it's running android 2.3.3. Once you root this phone and get rid of the bloatware it runs very quick. So IMO I don't see a single reason to spend $429 on an iPhone 3GS.

  • Its nice to see Apple is getting owned my cheap Android phones… All the Apple fanboys thought it wouldn't be possible.

    • -2

In what sense are they getting owned? Many stats lately put Apple as the worlds number one smartphone manufacturer and its not like iOS figures are bad against Androids either.

      http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_largest_smartphone_manufacture…

      • in the sense that android has more users than apple despite being the new kid on the block. samsung + HTC has 27% market share alone not even counting LG motorola huawei etc

      • these figures are irrelevant because android is an OS, not a manufacturer per se

  • Vodafone have the 3GS free on the $29 cap, on 24 month contract.

    • Good find.

  • +2

cant believe it. this is a bargain?
who want my 3gs?pre-jailbroken loaded with tens of good apps and games, $200 only.

    edit: mine is 16gb

    • Are you serious? Is the phone still in nice condition?

      • now i carry two phones everyday, one sgs2 and the other 3gs. i admit being an ios user for 2 years, i am used to it very well. i use 3gs to read books and use the "free" tomtom everytime i drive to somewhere i am not familiar. i dont play much games, apparently 4.3inch is far superio than 3.5'.

  • It is obvious the 3GS is being cleared out in prep for the iPhone 4S/5 announcement. I predict a very cheap iPhone 4 (maybe 8GB but I think Apple will stick to 16GB/32GB/64GB from now on).

  • it's a good price for a 3gs if you don't need/can't afford the latest whizzbang iphone.

  • in coming few days, iPhone 4 price is going to be dropped by apple
    Source : http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/iphone/cheaper-iphone-…

  • Hoprfully dropped to $99 like touchpad, woukdnt u be happy?

  • Optus have ad in the Daily Telegraph today - same price but $50 recharge (not $30)

  • +1

uh oh Steve has quit, thats the end of apple then…
