Been waiting for this phone to get back under $500 but washing machine died yesterday so will pass this up but in case it is of interest for others.

Stocked at officeworks so could go for a price match and get it even cheaper.

    Welcome to OzB OP!

Great initiative, but it has been as low as $434 before so don't really see a deal here. Hope you get a better bargain for your washing machine.

    • +24

Are we going to compare all deals to their record low prices?

$434 Was the seller having it on sale and eBay coupon at the same time which rarely happen.

      • +11

Granted above link was the record low price, but this phone has been cheaper from other retailers previously. Source The comment was more of a forewarning for potential buyers to help make a informed decision.

      • +1

I once stacked a good guys sale on a fetch box with a ebay 20% off with a ebay i think Germany 10% off gift cards. All sales going at one time lol

    • +4

Yep I reckon it is a good deal considering I know two people who have bought these phones for $550 last week. One was me for the wife. Well done OP

    • +13

If its the lowest price now, then that's the deal. You can wait for another similar deal for $434 which may or may never come.

      • +1

Also for some people using Zip or Afterpay is also a benefit in this case through Big W here.

  • +4

I've been meaning to ask for all these A series phones why get them over the S series?

S8 can be had for about $400 now and S9 for $550. Wouldn't it be better to just get one of those?

    • +1

If you want update, this will get Android 11 whereas S8 is stuck with 9 and S9 is stuck with 10.

    • +2

S8 will be stuck with Android Pie 9 now with no further major OS upgrade. A70 already comes with Android 9 so you will get 2 more major OS upgrades. Plus A70 looks good with 2 GB more RAM than S8 or S9, double in size of internal storage, 25W fast charging bigger battery and Camera maybe? A70 is actually one of great mid range phone.

    • +1

Also, fingerprint scanner position - the A Series is under the screen, not at the rear.

      • +2

Damn that sucks, rear was good

        • +8

Nah, under screen is so much better. I don't want to pick up my phone off my desk every time I want to unlock it and check something.

      • +2

Yeah A70 and A50 has in-display scanner but OzB favourite A20 and A30 still has the rear scanner.

      • Edit, already answered ^^

Bought if for $427 two months ago from Jbhifi. Please note Australian stock is not Dual sim. I needed a dual sim but got stuck with my purchase.

By the way $498 is not a bargain by any means.

    • Was it advertised at $427 from JB when you got yours?
Or was it price beat from another shop?

      • +1

AusPost had it for around $450 and Jbhifi price beat that

    • +1

The price for the A70 and everywhere else was $600 last week for true australian model.

I know, because I bought it at that price.

(with a 28 degrees card, of course).

I bought in July 2019, great battery life, only average camera, I would still buy again.

Thanks googleyahoo69 that is uncanny. It is the exact model I ended up with. Got it from here though https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/bosch-7-5kg-fron… using the AUSSIE2020 code to knock a further $20 off came to $649.

      • +1

It's 619 on their eBay page. Can't post the link for some reason, but it's the first result if you search Bosch 7.5 front loader

        • Paid $800 for our one less $200 cashback 2 yrs ago.

  • You can use gift card to purchase so that's 5% off as well. No need to price match at office work.

how is A70 compared to OzB favourite v30+ ?

    • +2

Also keen on hearing opinions on this. Have a $500 budget to replace my smashed S8. Any other recommendations welcome.

      • +1

How about the Oppo reno Z for $406 via good guys commercial?

Only negative is that it lacks waterproofing

      • I've been using v30+ for close to a year now. Great phone, but it has some small annoying gimmicks that make me look around for alternatives. Eg:
curved screen not such a good idea, hard to get decent screen protector
callers can't hear me from time to time - apparently there is a few seconds silence
sometimes screen does not respond, you need to lock it then unlock

Could be just my unit and these are no dramas, but slightly painful in everyday use.

To balance it, v30+ has some great things going for it too :)

        • I had an okay one with a black bezel so the curved gaps don't appear but it's cracked due to sitting too close to my case. Bit annoying to lock when it's on a table as well.

        • Just wondering if your on Oreo or Pie?

            • @jackwilk: Sounds like that could get annoying having to unlock and lock just to unlock phone,

might wear out the power button too. Have you done a factory re set after the Pie update?

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Nah I can live with it, too much hassle to reinstall everything. Other than those small issues it's a great phone.

    • Worse. Interior CPU, no quad DAC, no waterproof and mil spec, cost more

      • +1

Isn't v30+ dual SIM? That might work for some.
A70 screen seems to be better than v30+ and also 2 GB more RAM in A70. But then it all boils down to which phone does better memory management.

      • +1

        Aren't both CPUs interior?

  • +4

been using this since December from the previous $434 deal coming from a Note 8 which had deteriorated battery life.

Great phone with excellent battery life
screen fingerprint is nice but not as fast

The A71 was announced at CES so you should see this version drop a lot more

  • +1

I got it 6 months ago and love it. Great battery life and wide angle camera. I took all the photos for a recent trip with two others with iPhones, their camera is so inferior it's not even a joke.

    • I have a similar model that had 2 year warranty. Is this the same one?

      • +1

I think all Australian Samsung phones have 2 year warranty.

    • "Dadidalol" just wondering which model iphones the two others had in order to compare better?

      • +1

        iphone 6 :D

        • From what I read it might even be better/similar to iphone 7.

      • +1

One is an XR, the other I'm not sure. They also had to carry portable powerbanks to recharge their phones during the day lol. My A70 easily lasts 15-20 hours on a single charge even with heavy use of Google maps, grabcar/uber and being the main phone for photos during my trip. Only downside was that it isn't water resistant so I had to be super careful around pools etc

        • Sounds good ( for you, not so good for the iphone users though ).

Got to love a SD 77x series CPU coupled with a large battery and fairly clean Android.

That huge sharp 6.7" Amoled screen is a bonus for a lot less than a XR.

A20 Vodafone locked $179 also at Big W.

  • Why is it that the phones only get 2 major software updates ? when they have decent specs ?

    • +4

so u can buy more phones

    • +1

People usually release custom roms to update these older phones anyhow, but yeah it's basically to make you buy a new phone, which sucks

  • +2

I replaced my Pixel3 with this phone.

I am deliberately not charging my A70 for 3 days, just to luxuriate in being able to do this.

    • Tis a wonderful feeling!
My days of needing to carry a powerbank or look everywhere for a place to charge my phone is long over.

      • I took my a70 off the charger on monday night.

It is now friday morning and it has 27%.

        So much better

  • +6

paying using woolworth egiftcard to get another 5% off =)

    • How can you get 5% of egiftcard

  • How does this one compares with OPPO A9 2020?

    • +1

Review ColorOS on Google to form your own opinion

  • Australian version or International?
    I guess the latter

    • +1

You guessed wrong. Australian for sure. Big W don't grey import. They leave that for Kogan etc.

  • When I was looking at them HN and OW had the international model at $100 cheaper than the Au model
The Australian model has YN at the end of the model number

    • +1

So, does HN and OW now sell grey imports ( int. model ) as well as local in their own stores now. First I heard.

  • I know this is not new, but I just noticed that Kogan have the A70 refurbished for $412 + delivery.
