    Wow nice!If only I didn't already trap myself in a 2 year contract (>_<)

    • +2

OP should state 3G bands 2100/900

      no NextG

  • Great bit of tech, had a mate upgrade from this model to the S II and he said he still prefers the S.
I was tossing up between this and the HTC Desire HD and opted for the desire, but after playing with a few om my mates S's I knew I had chosen poorly it is one of the most polished android phones out there.

    • Why did he prefer the S over the SII ?

    • Yeah i wanna know too

      • +8

I've used both extensively and there is no way in hell anyone can prefer the S unless size is a big issue.

        • +1

        • +2

I love my S2 sooo much more than my S1

    • +2

Your friend is not your friend…, NO ONE in their right mind would choose an S over the SII…., Get REAL man, play with both of them you'll kno why ! lol

      • +1

S is fine with Gingerbread firmware.

        • +1

Read Up, this was a reply to his story.
I had the S myself until my rugged needs were met by my Defy. ;)

    • the most polished? u serious?
htc's android r usually better.. not comparing S2 and Sensation though

  • +1

BTW is this phone stuck with Android 2.1 officially?

    • +2

      no it's up to 2.3.4

      • +3

Actually it's 2.3.3 officially (ie through Kies)

but 2.3.4 is available unofficially from multiple developers on xda forums and from Samfirmware.com

        • Nice, I think Samsung software support is a lot faster than like LG.

Peoples still waiting LG Optimus black or 2X to update to 2.3 officially.

        • +1

If you're willing to install unofficial software, the Galaxy S has a HUGE community of developers that will keep it up to date well past the time Samsung stop development.

        • I've installed 2.3.4 with Odin and it's amazing! It runs lightning fast.

You don't need the SII if you're willing to update the firmware on the S!

    • The easiest mod so far, at least for me is:

darkyrom 10.2 extreme ed -final release (gingerbread 2.3.4)

      • DarkyROM 10.2.1 is very soon to be released too

      • -1

        thou shall not selfharm :P

      • saying that always gets you more negs.

        • -1

super 'neg' forever :) it's time to create new id LOL

        • -1

Indeed, now you get a -5.

      • -8

I am talking about the question up there.

"BTW is this phone stuck with Android 2.1 officially?"

  • +2

    Damn im very tempted!

    • +1

people still flogged these off on gumtree for around 300+ (most of them are contract phones so no warranty), i think getting one outright from a reputable store like big w for $399 is quite fair.

a $349 sale at bigw would have been an eye opener.

  • +1

I was looking at the $188 Sonic…Is this phone more than twice as good?

    • Yes, check this out.

      http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_brings_us_some_new_…

Just photo and 720p video recording already a lot better.

    • thinking the same thing. You could buy 2 sonics for this price.

It is worth spending double the $$$??

      • +5

definitely worth buying a better one for even if it costs TWICE the price.

It'll make you feel more than TWICE happy with the phone

      • The sonics a decent android phone, runs pretty quick when you root it and get rid of the stock launcher. But theirs little development, so I wouldn't recommend it if you plan on installing Custom ROMS/Kernels. This is a great deal at $400 and is worth the extra cash IMO.

    • +3

It's really your call… the Galaxy S is significantly better in every measurable way (except size if you happen to like small phones).
Processor and graphics performance are about double
      Screen looks AMAZING!
      Screen resolution is much higher
Camera is higher resolution (but no LED flash)
Internal memory is enormous even compared to the most expensive current models

Wondering whether Officeworks do the same phone, cannot find it on their site.

If so may be you can get 5% off with price match.

    • +1

Why are you guys so fussed about 5% from officeworks ?? Just respect the retailer who offered the deal in the first place.

I do understand that 5% sometimes is a lot and its understandable that you go to officeworks but here its just $20..

    • +5

negged for showing it off here. And you may have been scammed for getting Galaixy S II instead of Galaxy S II
btw this is aus stock. national warranty mate
      still quite cheap at $399

I'm not negging you just cuz i paid over $700 for my Galaxy S II

      • +2

Its almost the same price i paid 1.5 years ago when I got mine from US. (440$ to be exact). :). I know its not AU model and no warranty and stuff.. but it worked excellent so far.

        • Yeah I have nothing against phones from overseas
It's just when they break down (if it ever happens)

paying $50-100 extra for much more convenient repair/replacement service is worth it
          that's all ;)

    • How come? Not that cheap even in Asia.

      • There was a sale from an import store and it was around $540 inc. shipping to AUS
all sold out. and this was the day after i bought mine lol

        • Its round 600 in my hometown (good price) but obviously SS products made in my country are sub-standard.

    • +2

seriously can the ones that got the pricing error deal a month back just stop harassing other threads with their own achievements?

it's really de-motivating for the others to sift through the same BS again when clearly even SS flacked the losses.

      • oh was that pricing error? damn it. I still missed out on it

        • +6

yes it was a pricing error but was honored, all 600 orders of them.

these guys were whining about how long the postage took, now their harassing other re-sellers claiming that this is the correct price to sell at.

it's wrong and de-motivating for other re-sellers when clearly there were huge losses made and non of the ozbargainers copped it.

        • No shit it seemed way too cheap for it…

I mean I would have been happy with $650
just under $500 didn't make any sense to me

I should've ordered one anyway haha

  • +1

Not suitable for Telstra though :(

    • +2

What do you mean? I'm using it on Telstra (bought the phone from allphones outright)
It's always on 3G at least Often H and H+
      Very stable connection

oh wait.. you're talking about Galaxy S not S II lol

      • +1

Yeah…because this bargain is for the SGS. Heh.

        • yup

    • +1

Rat! I cancelled the order as I am with Telstra NextG.

      • +2

Telstra released the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000T model, available exclusively to its customers in the local market. Its form factor is identical to the GT-I9000 (As used by all other Australian carriers and retailers) but with support for 850 MHz 3G instead of 900 MHz 3G. The GT-I9000T supports 850/1900/2100 MHz 3G.

The one that Big W are offering is the GT-I9000.

        • -1

That is why some version from mobicity said NextG.

    • +1

You can get a new 850mhz AT&T rebadged/restyled SGS from the US for ~$300 New on eBay (for AT&T its called the "Samsung Captivate")
It has almost identical specs and you dont pay anywhere near the price telstra wants for its NextG SGS! + its even cheaper than this deal!

      • Thanks for the info.

  • +1

    Or go
    http://www.simplymobiles.com.au/cart.php?m=search_results&se…
and enter Discount5 as the voucher

    • Around the same after they added delivery.

    • Is that one for Telstra NextG?

      • No, it shows as 900 MHz, Telstra needs 850 MHz

  • +2

if you are flying overseas in 30 days, you can get another $40 off.

  • Not directly related to this post but are all version of Galaxy s2 Telstra NextG compatitble?

    • S2=yes (it's Quad-band 3G like the iPhone 4)
      S1 (ie this model)=no

  • Have had mine for ~2months, great phone, well worth $400.

  • +1

I loved this phone when I had it :D Especially on CM7, which made it run flawlessly. I have moved on to my LG 2x however (380$) which is also running cm7 and is amazing <3

    • Where did you get the LG 2x for $380?

      • Ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LG-Optimus-2X-P990-Brown-Fedex-WT…

From hong kong. I got mine about 1 month ago its fine from a hong kong seller and have had no problems.

Expansys also have it for 386 + delivery (not sure what that is)

        http://www.expansys.com.au/lg-optimus-2x-208449/

        • So the P990 is also not 850, right?

        • surperforever: No its not 850. I think they are out there but I haven't looked. I left Telstra so don't need it :)

          donkeykong:
I personally feel (and some of my iPhone 4 friends haha) that this phone is better in the hand. Its not as light as the Galaxy S / SII / Optimus Black. Therefore I like this phone more so. I am a big fan of CM7 as well so that was another major buying point after the price. They are both amazing phones but the LG is Dual core, HDMI out, 1080 recording etc etc so specs wise it beats the Samsung. Build wise I think it also beats the Samsung as I like the feel of a heavier phone that's not like plastic. My dads optimus black feels plasticy, didn't like it really :\

      • I have never like LG product and was wondering what is the general quality like for the phone over the Samsung?

        • Exact opposite here… everything Samsung craps itself for me and have a great run out of LG.

  • I remember when I got mine back in late July last year for $510 AUD from Optus. Upgraded it to 2.3.3 and it works much better except for the shitty battery life now.

  • Have a BNIB one for $350 delivered if someone wants.

    PM me if interested.

  • Good price, but isnt it essentially locked to Optus these days?

Telstra uses 850, so it doesn't work at all.
Vodafone uses 2100 and expanding into 850, so you are using half a network. One that is crappy to begin with.

So its only good for the 900/2100 Optus networks.

  • Finally the price dips below $400. Cant wait for Iphone 5 to come out, and hopefully the price drops even more.

    • or the lte galaxy…

    • Can't wait for the iPhone 6!

Someone mention that the LG Optimus 2X P990 going for $400 from ebay. Would this P990 be a better buy as its a dual core. I wonder would the local LG set drop the price as well or not?

    • do not understand what you're saying, did you read what you posted? its a P970 they are selling.

      • Zyron posted this "optimus 2x is available drop-shipped from HK on eBay for under $400 including shipping."

  • Is this phone Better than iPhone 4?

    • -1

if you can find a brand new ip 4 for $400, by all means go for it

both same processors but the ip 4 is a better experience for newbies

      • +1

I like iphone but hates itunes

      • Just the CPU? Then why is iPhone 4 so much more expensive and ppl actually pay that price?

        • +11

          Because ppl are cattle.

The Galaxy S also has a much better GPU and 16-32GB more storage maxed out.

        • +3

          shuuuush!

there's a mod around here who doesn't like to hear the truth about iPhone's…

        • Apple products are more expensive because apple doesn't make any/much money on their software. They also have incredibly good software that focuses heavily on user experience and attention to detail. The iPhone also has a massive userbase due to good advertising and word of mouth - as a result they have no need or desire to lower prices.

I've never owned an apple product but I can see where the appeal is.

      • Probably one of the best competitors for the ip4, so it's a matter of preference and price.

    • by all due respect yes Samsung Galaxy S i9000 has better spec than Iphone 3gs,4

i9100 way better!!!! samsung galaxy series has really good specs i have both i prefer Samsung!

  • Gues they only took interest in the retina display.

    • But I (having used both) reckon the Super Amoled is really good, at least on par with the Retina display and each is superior to other phones on the market in its own way.

    • if you want a good comparison with IP 4, then take galaxy s2 instead, because market price wise they are the same, unless you decide to buy at RRP from an Apple store, which automatically grants victory to Samsung.

for galaxy s, I would compare it against 3G S, same price category.

      • +2

i thought we compare based on the specs?

        • exactly, galaxy s absolutely destroys 3gs and sg2 destroys ip4
