for some reason I think the entire cruise industry is going to take a big hit.

Yes it would need to be half this or the best cabin for this price on a single person room for me to consider it after the deaths.

      • Weren’t the people that died 84? With pre existing conditions?

        • +1

It isn't even that though. Even if you personally don't get sick, do you want to be confined to a tiny room for a couple of weeks with a bonus 2 week holiday on Christmas Island? With the virus being airborne and in sewage systems a cruise is the perfect place for it to spread.

          • @ozbs25: Of course not, screw that risk.

The tourism industry will take a big hit

    • Oh they already are. With flights cancelled. Chinese tourists suppose to board cruise ships are not making it to the country theyre suppose to board the ship at.

The cruise ships are running virtually empty because would be passengers cant board the ship or have cancelled because they fear the corona virus spreading on it.

Wife and I were already planning a cruise to NZ in March. Quickly pulled the plug on that idea. Price versus life I guess

Can't be as bad as what the media portray?
We don't have anyone positive in Oz with COVID19.

      • +5

We've had 15 cases with 11 recovered and 4 people still dealing with the virus from latest figures I've seen. If you've heard the last 4 have all recovered, that's great. Either way, the risk is pretty damn small given that we've managed to keep it under control so far and NZ doesn't have any cases at all.

Would be more worried about the pollution these ships generate

I'd like to respond with "Until someone finds an economical way propel ships without the use of fossil fuels" but I'm not. There are masted cruisers out there but they are no different because they still have fossil-burning engines (navigation and electricity). In the last 20 (or so years), large cruise ships even have their own desalination plants (drinking/cooking and washing).

Compared to the smoke belching, bunker-fuel burning variety (there are still some out there), these modern ships are a generations apart.

        Whatever floats your boat.

        • F you look into it a bit further, which you might have done, you will find out the fossil.fuel used is not our regular fossil fuel, but the dirties of its kind.
When the new international regulations come in, they will burn a lot cleaner

Edit…looks like I'm w months behind the fact

          • @zoner:

Are you talking about bunker fuel (aka heavy fuel oil)? Modern cruise ships don't use bunker fuel.

  • Everyone will suffer.

is this a standard price? if not, what is the standard rate for this post to be eligible in ozbargain ?

Can't think of anywhere worse to be then in a cruise ship while there is a virus outbreak happening all over the world… but hey its cheap so aye aye captain!

Does the price include volcano insurance?

  • Mum just went on her first cruise with Holland America on this cruise. Everything is in US dollars. Not being a seasoned traveller I don't think she expected how expensive it would turn out to be with the extra costs and foreign exchange rate. They were a few passengers down because of travel bans on the Chinese customers.

    • +1

I'm curious on the extra costs. Probably the biggest out-of-pocket expense is alcohol. I don't find the speciality restaurants are worth the extra when you already have free food.

      • The booking agent wasn't the best and mum didn't know what questions she should ask. There's a $14.95 USD tipping fee per day she wasn't aware of. If you book onshore excursions through them it's in USD. They flew back from Auckland and the flight costs were in USD. Told her next time go with a cruise company that uses Aussie dollars on board.

  • Does the price include COVID-19 insurance?
