Ultima IV: Quest of The Avatar for PC Downloads for Free

320

GOG offers downloads of Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar for Windows for free. That's the lowest price we could find for this game in any format. (We couldn't find it for PC elsewhere; however, it's available for the NES — yes, NES — for $15.) Ultima 4 is widely regarded as one of the first RPGs to focus on narrative rather than combat.

What are the system requirements on this?
Will it run on my 14" 486dx, or do I have to fork out for one of those fancy $3500 Pentium thingys?
And the 25Mb download is going to take agggggeeesss on my 28kbps Netcomm Roadster.

*sigh…. those were the days :).

Actually not really sure why it would be 25MB. It was on a few 5.25" floppies when I first played it. Maybe all the runtime environment/virtual machine so it can work on today's computer.

More than likely it comes with dosbox for emulation. Gog do that for those games that require it so that you just grab the game and play it. No need to dick about with further downloads.

    • it took me a week and a half on my 2400kbps Zyxel.

Pfft. At least you have a modem! I had to download it at work and then PKZip it across 20 1.4mb disks to take home. And then I got a #*%$ error on disk 18!

      • well, back then, i don't have a work place to leech off. :)

  • Once played that on an Apple ][. I wonder how well it would run on Windows 7?

    Best. Game. Evar!!!
    Seriously, it really really is!

Wish I hadn't clicked the link and seen those screenshots. I remember the graphics from Ultima 4 as being awesome

    • hahaha… me too :).

I loved playing D&D Gold box RPG's (Forgetten Realms etc)…. hours and hours… and then I loaded up the Amiga 500 recently and was like omg… what the hell was I thinking! But back then, I was into them…. hard :).

My first Ultima was Ultima VI. I still have the box & manual (& some but not all of the disks, although they're all corrupt now).

Downloaded in seconds, installation took about 5 minutes for some reason (on a Win 7, i7 860, 8GB, system).

It does launch within DOSBox and runs fine. Now to find the .conf file so I can run it windowed…

    • Ultima III FTW.

Alkabeth - pre-ultima 1. first "doom" type game by Lord British. awesome.

Ultima 4- my parents bought it for me from Hong kong in 1987. 4 floppies.

    • You might want to look up nuvie.
It's a native client that uses the original Ultima VI data files and lets you play on modern PCs.

      • Nice to have legal copies of the data files for free now. :) I'll check that out. There's even the possibility of a Linux version so I'll be happy on my Asus 1015b. :)

        • You've been able to get it for Linux for a while:
          http://xu4.sourceforge.net/
What I'm waiting for is a version for Android so I can play it on the train.

Oh, and for all those Ultima I/II/III "when I was a boy" wars - I recall playing Akalabeth on my Apple II which was Richard Garriott's 'Ultima 0' precursor to the Ultima series … but screw the FTW bit - Ultima IV was the best.

how do the graphics compare to modern warfare 2?

    • +1

Similar, but this is turn based.

      • dang my laptop can't run modern warfare 2 … sigh

  • Do you have to set up an account to download?

    • Yes.

It requires an email address and a birthdate (fake or otherwise).

  • Wow, thanks for this - I used to play this on the C64 and then the Amiga - old school rules…

This has been free for a while directly from
    Ea/bioware from www.ultimaforever.com - however this still gets a + because it's ultima!

  • What every happened to Lord British?

    • IRA.
