Here is an excerpt from their Coronavirus statement:

MEDICAL CLAIMS IN CONJUNCTION WITH ASSOCIATED ADDITIONAL EXPENSES IN RELATION TO CORONAVIRUS: It is a condition of our policies that you are not aware of any circumstance which is likely to give rise to a claim. If you incur medical expenses with associated additional expenses as a result of contracting coronavirus, there may be cover up to the benefit limit. Our Claims Team will consider DFAT travel advices in place at the time you purchased your policy and where you chose to travel.
CANCELLATION AND OTHER RELEVANT SECTIONS OF THE POLICY: Cover for this event is excluded under other policy sections such as cancellation.
“We will not pay for claims caused by or arising from an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses, or the threat or perceived threat of any of these.”

However, if you have purchased the Cancel-For-Any-Reason option (available on some of our products) and wish to cancel your trip, you can claim the non-refundable portion of the prepaid travel costs according to the terms and conditions of the policy.

  • So does this cover medical costs associated with getting corona or not? Seems to be contradictory.

    • +2

if you read any insurance cover with contradictory or confuse statements. 99% tells you is not.

    • my read is:
medical costs - maybe but probably not because you were likely to know infection with coronavirus was going to be possible whilst travelling.
Cancelling trips etc - no cover

      1. If you are not, then you will be so.
      2. If unsure of meaning, see above
      3. In the absence of clarification, see part 1 and 2.

I asked them. Medical cost is not covered.

      • I asked them. Medical cost is not covered.

What about funeral costs due to coronavirus?

        • Nothing will be covered if it was caused by the virus.

          • @ca6leguy: Will they pay for the postmortem to determine whether death was caused by the virus?

I can't seem to find reference to this in the T&Cs…

    CoverLESS

  • +6

I have a friend that purchased a Covermore policy January 1, long before Coronavirus was a household name. The $2k Nepal tour next month is a write off due to their non-coverage. For a premium cost provider to have such a hole in their cover when many lesser known insurers do not is reason for me to never give them my business in future.

  • They are good for covering less.

  • +2

We will not pay for claims (under Section 2.3 or 2.5) caused by:
    1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses (or arising directly or indirectly from these) or the threat, or perceived threat, of any of these.

Go for ING. They cover for this and it’s cheaper.

    • +1

Does it really? That'd be great if so. This is so confusing? Most of the insurers have a note specifically about corona on their sites

      • I just called ING. They don’t cover Coronavirus.

        • ah yes, i also called on Monday, they told me as of Friday it was a worldwide exclusion. before that maybe ok depending on where you are going.

    • +2

How do you know this? Won't they get out of it with this standard exclusion?

      1. Any claim relating to an incident which you were aware of at the time you took out this insurance and which could reasonably be expected to lead to a claim.
      • this is a standard clause in all travel insurance PDS

  • +3

I've tried a few travel insurances. Between my partner and I we have had to make claims with them all. By far Covermore are the worst. This post reminds me I need to call them again as they still haven't correctly transferred a successful claim I made.

    • +1

Which would you recommend? We're going to the States in a few months with a young baby. I want to make sure we are well covered for any health care.

      • +2

        Reconsider your travel..

No travel insurance company will cover Coronavirus.

An intensive care bed in the USA would cost a minimum of USD $5,000/day for the bed only - plus doctors fees.

Read the story of the U.S. citizen who went to check if he had coronavirus and got hit with USD $3000++++ medical bills - even though he did not have the virus.

You need to seriously read policy terms, call insurance companies and ask questions and know the details of your risks before deciding to travel.

        Here's the Miami story:

        • And yet some still complain about our medicare lol

I can't comment on them all. Someone below mentioned ING.
The two biggest claims we made were hassle free with TID so we would use them again until I get a chance to read all the fine print.
On our last trip I was with Covermore and my wife with TID. We had to visit a paediatrician every second day, purchase lots of medication, including nebuliser etc. We had to cancel flights etc. We were away two months. My wife lodged herself and our daughter with her insurance with TID and I lodged my expenses (just flights and travel costs) with Covermore. I've just spoken with Covermore again and they can't get it right whereas my wife and daughters claim was processed in full sometime ago.

That said, I haven't compared them recently with others. It's probably worth a post in the forum here or on Whirlpool Forums.

EDIT: definitely look into the coronavirus and what's covered. If you present at any surgery with with cold and flu symptoms and have travelled recently (i.e. landed in USA) you may be treated with caution for the virus. As I think someone mentioned even if you don't have it those costs may not be recovered.

Before you book any future travel - please take the time to check what coverage your travel insurer may, or most likely, will not provide for coronavirus.

    For some light reading …

I did a keyword search for "virus" and "pandemic" in the Covermore insurance policy attached to a major bank's credit cards …

Basically if coronavirus puts you in intensive care overseas you're potentially financially cactus if you, hopefully, survive!

Even costs arising from the PERCEPTION of a virus threat are not covered.

    So, for example …

… if someone thinks there's a virus on your flight …

… and the plane's delayed 24 hours while they sterilise it …

… and you miss your cruise.

The "PERCEPTION" clause may give them an out … to potentially deny your claim.

I called the insurer and, apart from their medical call centre advice - you get nothing from any coronavirus related claims.

I'm sure it's the same with most, if not all, travel insurers.

Here is what it says in the particular travel policy about coverage in relation to viruses, or even PERCEIVED threat of viruses or pandemics:

    SECTION 2: Additional expenses

We will not pay for claims (under Section 2.3 or 2.5) caused by:

    1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses (or arising directly or indirectly from these) or the threat, or perceived threat, of any of these.

“Pandemic” means an Epidemic that is expected to affect an unusually large number of people or involves an extensive geographic area.

SECTION 3: Amendment or cancellation costs

We will not pay for claims caused by:

    1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses (or arising directly or indirectly from these) or the threat, or perceived threat, of any of these.

    SECTION 8: Travel delay

We will not pay for claims caused by:

    1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses (or arising directly or indirectly from these) or the threat, or perceived threat, of any of these.

    SECTION 10: Special events

We will not pay for claims caused by:

    1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses (or arising directly or indirectly from these) or the threat, or perceived threat, of any of these.

    General exclusions

    We will not pay for:

    1. claims involving or directly or indirectly arising from … (edited) …. stress, travel exhaustion, any conduct engaged in whilst under the influence or effect of alcohol or drugs, …. (edited) … or virus.
