  • Doesn't Oz have cash back right now making it cheaper through Au?

    • Seems the cashback categorisation has changed to exclude almost all electronics.

    • Who through? Checked the main ones, and there isn't any cashback on Electronics

      • Shopback has a couple one says electronics/computers and another says tech. But it's hardly clear so I have no confidence.

          No they don't…

@spackbace: I'm not disagreeing with you, but there is advice on that same page saying there is an ongoing discount available on the categories I mentioned. It's probably bad info, but it's there. Shopback just have a trashy page without all the proper updates with the new excisions.

              Yup! Definitely

@spackbace: Exclusions… Dan sorrel check (that was damn spell check, we use sorrel all the time, right?)

I was going to post this last night and actually cancelled my us for Au order in the cash back ambiguity. Oh well, still cheaper.

    • gone for tech https://www.cashrewards.com.au/amazon-australia same with shopback

I've missed too many well priced external HDD in the past so I've jumped on this. Thank you Spacebace!

  • Do you have to mod the WD ones to shuck? Or are they just shuck and install like the seagate ones?

    • I used the molex connector option for a 10TB one

      • Does it only affect older power supplies?

        • Not sure tbh

Easystore is just Elements with Best Buy branding, they have the same (or similar drives). The specific data on the 8TB drives may be different for 12TB ones though.
The 3.3v chart (power supplies) and the following modifications paragraph may be useful. I'm planning on using the tape mod but YMMV.

      • Link to buy one?

          Pick your flavour :)

FWIW I had a seller screw me over, and they were actually shipping from overseas, despite saying they were local (postage took too long, ended up getting refund). That seller doesn't seem to be around any more thankfully, but there's many like them

          Ended up buying from Jaycar

Was a couple bucks more than eBay, but could walk in and grab it, not wait weeks for an overseas order

          • @spackbace: Thanks.
            Any issues?
Heard online that some adapter heat up and burnout the computer?

            • @congo: Well touch wood it hasn't exploded yet lol

            • @congo: that might be regarding the single mold plastic (pc internal) connectors … there are videos showing how they are quite prone to melting/shorting, and even bursting into flame and causing fires.
Apparently the older style, multi piece (click-together assembly in the factory) connectors are much more safe.
If you are worried, would suggest pirating parts from some older computers, or visiting TipShops etc, and replace with those.

              • @mutantx: I did the sticky tape trick and that worked.

      • So was it sata power on the drive? and you just needed the molex adapter as you didn't have any spare sata power plugs?

I've read about people shucking some external drives only to find the USB board is soldered to the drive, rendering it useless.

        • The molex adapter is used to short the pins, if you connect it directly the system won't 'see' the drive. It's WD's way of stopping people from shucking the drive

          • @spackbace: oh, instead of the sticky tape trick on the 3 pins.. gotcha

          • @spackbace: Good to know. I was worried it'd damage the drive if I connected it without the mod. So it's safe to try connecting it directly first?

    • I use 4 of the 10tb ones in my Synology NAS.

No requirement to mod, just shuck and install.

I suppose it depends on your use

  • do I, don't I, do I…. will hold off for now.
A few hours to go though…

  • This item is labelled "International product from outside Australia" via Amazon.com.au
I've read up some of the warranty/return policy and still confused - anybody have experience on the warranty side of things ?

    • Depends what you want to do with it. If you shuck it, your warranty is voided anyway

      • you can still put it back in the housing for warranty

  • deal didnt last long..

  • The coronavirus has impacted the markets and the exchange rate and so driven up the cost of tech. 😫

Just got an email that my 12TB drive shipped today

      That'll help during hibernation!

I'll fill it in no time!

  • Got an email this morning saying the carrier was unable to complete the order due to 'inaccurate information for my address, and has been returned and a refund issue'.
This is their way of saying shipping the item is too expensive for them.
    Sad day.

    • Wow :/ that's (profanity)

      • My address was in Japanese, my default address for Amazon US should be in latin alphabet. My fault ;*(
