Thanks DB, added to my collection of courses!

  • "Hmmmm, I wonder if I should have my first introduction to programming by doing the lowest rated Python course in the English language on Udemy. It's only 6.5 hours of my life.".

    • It’s rated 4.0 though? I am pretty sure this isn’t the lowest rated course in the english language in Udemy. That’s not to say it’s a quality course, who knows if it is. No one here will actually do it probably lol. Still added to the collection cuz why not.

      • Just to clarify, I said lowest rated Python course in English, but yeah it was certainly an exaggeration. It's no where near the top though, despite having such few reviews (https://www.udemy.com/topic/python/?lang=en&p=4&sort=highest…). Udemy reviewers are considered like eBay reviewers - very generous.

I said this just recently, but as a programmer that was once learning from scratch themselves, I'm trying to dissuade other people from wasting their time on courses no one would pay for anyway (it's the equivalent of using an eBay seller with a 94% rating in the Udemy world). But like you say, no one on OzBargain really does these free Udemy courses, so it's just upvoting for a laugh.

Ozbargain has developed a terrible reputation in the real world in recent weeks for causing people to make terrible financial decisions regarding flight and cruise deals (mostly due to troll upvoting) so I'm trying to balance out the stupidity.

        • Any recommendations to learn other than these courses?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Unfortunately I learnt Python years ago before many of these courses existed.

Perhaps the highly rated and free Coursera course is worth doing for beginners: https://www.coursera.org/learn/python
(Whoops, just checked it out and the free trial ends in 7 days?!). I wonder if someone here tried the free Codecademy courses or even paid for pro?

But even a YouTube series may be more comprehensive and simply clearer than this Udemy course.

Another sensitive point for some is that the voice or accent can play a huge part in a learner's enthusiasm. A lot of people (including myself) prefer upbeat instructors over academic-sounding instructors, which is why the free courses from prestigious US universities used to turn me off (reminded me of my boring uni lecturers). I had a bad experience with a Coursers course years ago.

And certain nationalities can't understand certain accents as well as others. Spanish people can understand Italian accented English better than most of us can. Slavic speakers understand the intention of other Slavic speakers' broken English while others may get confused. People from South Asian regions are more accustomed to each other's different sound emphasis and translational grammar. And no one except maybe New Zealanders can often understand a strong Aussie accent peppered with idioms.

But to be honest, I "may have" simply torrented the higher rated Udemy and Lynda courses in my time.

@peterpeterpumpkin: Cheers. I may end up going down the same route. A legal torrent of course.

  • Doesn’t seem to be any content here in the course around ‘object oriented programming’… nothing about classes etc. maybe it’s coming at a later date?
