  • I was talking to someone recently and when they said " a book on viruses, terrorists must be really dumb because you don't need that book to strike fear into people"

Well all I can say is that person is a d head, but yeah why are there no crazy people running around with the virus creating terror.

And why did immigration minister Peter Dutton get affected yet not Donald trump.

We may be short of toilet paper, but at least tin hats are plentiful today.

  • the numbers coming out of Italy is alarming.. 6.8% mortality rate (although that figure doesn't account for asymptomatic carriers)

  • +5

for those just interested in the numbers https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

  • I don't know why there is a tonne of hate directed towards the New York Times. They are honestly one of the most trustworthy and reputable news organisation in the world.

    • +3

      Ha! Fishing for some drama!

      • +1

Legitimately not though. Nobody seems to be coming up with legitimate reasons about why they aren't trustworthy or good. Seems likes lot of people here are simply saying they are bad or fake news without substantiating the claim with solid evidence.

  • +1

There better be a series of articles that blame Hillary and Obama's second cousin or I'm yelling
    FAKE NEWS!

  • -8

    no deal

2 well known spreaders of fake news and propaganda

but yet some tool here will tell me i cant have an opinion and get my neg removed like they always do

    • +2

NY Times isn't anywhere on the local levels.

    • +1

      Triggered !!

    • Have your opinion but that doesn't make it any less of a deal. Trot on if it's not for you.

  • -7

    Don't bother… all fake news.

    • Now days anything you don't like /suits you its fake news .
Even the factual checks don't matter .

      • The issue is though, NY Times, as one example, has knowingly published fake news. Then it's mishandled the retraction of said fake news by playing dumb (Kavanaugh sex abuse story is one example). This is highly damaging to the public interest and trust of news media.

  • Very subjective US based news publications. Be mindful of the reputation for taking real stories, but leaving out important context so that it fits their narrative. It's not always fake news, but half truth news.

    • And which US based new publication would you recommend?

      • -1

I wouldn't. If I were American, I'd go to Reuters, Associated Press and the BBC.

        • -1

same fake news different brand name

        • I think Sputnik or RT might be more your thing

  • +4

    Anyone skim-read this as

    "Free access to Coronavirus"?

Ha. Thought it was something like a chickenpox party.

  • +1

Biased US based news. Not telling the truth. No deal.

  • +1

Would like to see the % of people saying NYT is fake news and are also Trump fans.

    • That Venn diagram is practically a circle ;)

    • +1

All mainstream news sources are fake news to a large extent.

  • Oh look, a news service doing what ot always does to get extra advertising clicks. Anyway these rags always have a set of free articles depending on the current news cycle.

If they removed all page advertising then I would believe their altruism.

  • +3

Thanks OP, bought 19 of them.

  • The thing is why follow US news?
they are so failed at this breakout.
    I meant US government.

    • +1

It could be useful for Aussies with relatives or friends in the US so they can see what's going on there. There are some good medical professionals in the US who have provided useful information but I don't know if they would be featured in the mainstream press. A couple of youtube vids have been mentioned somewhere in the coronavirus forum thread but I haven't checked them out. Maybe one of them is a recent Joe Rogan podcast.

  • I think we should be thankful

  • -2

Wow who pays to read about coronavirus

  • -2

Propaganda machines just made themselves free…lmao

  • +3

Double standard times and Washington Liars

  • Anyone have a conspiracy theory about Coronavirus? Mine is mainly that healthy people are being managed to prevent them being asymptomatic carriers. Basically that you are likely to be exposed now or later but efforts are being made for later not for your benefit, but the benefit of other, more vulnerable demographics. Even if well intentioned, the fact that your behaviour is being managed not for your benefit but the benefit of others should at least be stated.

    • +1

That is stated frequently. It’s far from a secret that we’re all making changes for the elderly and those with underlying conditions.

    • +1

      conspiracy theory

How is that a conspiracy theory …
      It's exactly what's been done.

      • I think it's conpiracy in that they can't openly tell gen snowflake these measures are to help gen boomer. It's boomers helping boomers. I think the Chief Medical Officer sidesteps saying it explicitly because people are less likely to cooperate if it's for the benefit if others. It's still a shielding of information and selective.

        • mate its the latest man made purge-

targets the elderly, the disabled, and the sick.

what proper fascist capitalist regime looks after slaves who can't work?

massive government savings to be made which is why Boris Mengele Johnson is leaving the elderly to die in care homes by law…

    • Wtf!

  • +1

Thanks for the posting op, more sources of news is a good thing. In a world flooded in propaganda, those 3 are in the ‘more trustworthy than average’ category. I subscribe to NYT to get a foreign perspective to weigh against our local media.

    • mate if you think that then as a consequence you have no informed comment to make about world affairs.

try finding the fact that people have been dying in America for some time of covid but have flu on their death certificates …..

  • -1

This is enemy propaganda. Turn it off.

They are pumping the fear because they have nobody that can beat him…

    • the democrats did but they stopped him deliberately yet again - trump supporters with a different brand name.

  • +1

I get my news from the Guardian and everything is already free.

    • you get some news then minus the bits they deliberately don't run…

      • The point is there are alternatives that don't charge you.
Also every media outlet is bias and aren't going to show you some content deliberately.

Free chance to get Coronavirus/COVID-19 @ The New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic

  • Free news articles - to spread fear and hysteria.

As opposed to websites that offer fact without the hype.

    There's a reason it's free.

  • Untrustworthy media outlets that knowingly spread disinformation to push their employers agendas. Do not trust

  • 'Eight more children have died of flu, bringing the total to 144 this season, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

Deaths among children are higher than during the same period in every other season since reporting started in 2004-’05 with the exception of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. About two-thirds of the deaths were due to influenza B viruses, which are known to cause severe illness in children.

Hospitalization rates for children also are unusually high. Children ages 4 and under have been hospitalized at a rate of 88.9 per 100,000 children, the highest on record for this point in the season. Rates for children ages 5-17 are 22.6 per 100,000 children, the highest in recent seasons except the 2009 H1N1 pandemic'

Some of these deaths were without doubt covid but of course the yanks covered it up with a useless test kit…

flu deaths in US same story, little retro testing with a working test kit

Amazed at the sentiments expressed by many in these comments, wouldn't have thought OzBargainer's would be like that… 🤫🤫

    • +1

I'm equally mock surprised and faux disappointed you think this is a situation where virtue signalling and condescending moralsplaining ellipses are appropriate or even possible. Different people die under EVERY model or approach, including your high horse scenario. You are condemning one set to death rather than another. Do you honestly think extending the curve out from 2 months to 6 months does not sacrifice people with other, less cool afflictions?

      • (cool reply but… did you reply to the correct comment?)

        • Absolutely. You can also insert whatever you want if someone goes the melodramatic SJW ellipses route.

          • @[Deactivated]: I remember Fraggle rock - cave dwellers weren't they?

            • @petry: Yep. Isn't petry a medium for culturing herpes?

              • @[Deactivated]: no its just a medium - you decided to give it the herpes

                • @petry: You signed the waiver for paid clinical trials. Don't get cold feet after the fact.

  • I can confirm that neither Washpo nor NYT's covid19 articles are free.

I still get the payment request page.
