Here's a bargain I first noticed via Kotaku. Big W are having a massive toy sale and are selling the Xbox 360 Arcade edition for an impressive $278. Includes a wireless controller, 256mb memory card, and 5 arcade games (I'm guessing games like pac-man arcade etc).

They also sell a 12 month gold xbox live subscription which includes a headset and 200 MS points for $68.84. Not bad considering that if you just bought the 12 month subscription from www.xbox.com it would cost $79.95.

Lastly, their wireless xbox 360 controllers are really cheap at $49.98. The cheapest I've ever seen them prior to this was at Big W for $58. The cheapest I've seen JB sell them for is about $62.

Bargain!!!! :D

  • noob here.. possible to add HDD for the arcade version? HDMI connection?

    • You can add the HDD easily, in fact it is available at big w for $78.84. As for HDMI, yes it should come with this unless they're selling really old stock.

  • That is great value.

I have an xbox 360, and have had no issues so far. Feeling a little ripped off actually!

The set up there with 256Mb memory card, and Video cable is definitely good enough to play games on a normal TV, but you could buy a component cable and play it on high def 1080i (they shouldn't cost that much on dealextreme.com or ebay.com.au)

You could add a HDD, I'm sure there are also cheaper ones off ebay.

And I'd say this version doesn't have an HDMI, but unless you have an HDMI TV, you won't need it. I'm not sure on this though, please check with Big W.

And games are cheap for the xbox 360 these days too, this is a good pick up for someone who wants to play next gen games on a cheaper budget.

  • Hi treblid. Looks like Big W have got the 20GB HDD on sale too for about $79.

You can just clip on the HDD to the arcade version. Here's a quick comparison between all the versions:

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/compare101.htm?WT.svl=nav

The network cable you can get anywhere (standard cat5 cable) so that's not really a difference. And they also seem to list backwards compatibility (to old xbox console games) as a difference but I'm pretty sure that a firmware update will fix that once you connect to xbox live.

The headset is useful for online play but if you buy the xbox live pack you'll get one included.

Other than that is the HDMI connector which seems to only come standard with the xbox 360 elite. I think all you'll need to do is buy the connector separately. But I'm not sure how much they cost.

    • Hmm. So all I need is to buy my own HDD, HDMI cable and CAT5e cable….

At that price it seems like a sin not to get it…

can anybody tells me if buying that + the $79HDD is cheaper than buying the normal console with HDD?

      • Not exactly - I've never seen the HDMI cable for sale, and I didn't get one with the $500 GTA4 deal I bought from Game in May. Pick up a copy of GTA4 and the HDD, and you'd have the same deal Game was offering, for about the same price (EB's has GTA4 at $115).

  • Jashjash I know what you mean, I bought my core system for nearly $400 and it didn't even come with a memory card. Also it only had a wired controller. The price we pay for getting in early…

    • yeah, i just suck it up, and think back on all the good times i've had with my buddy (the xbox… geeky i know..)

but with it's big game list, there's something for every gamer.

also many games can be had on the cheap with the 360. i popped into harvey norman here in highpoint, melbourne, and they have project gotham racing 4 for $20.

was tempted, but i probably wouldn't have time to play it, with the list of games i still have on my shelf!

but 20 bucks! that's insane! it's a year or more before ps3's good titles to get to that price.

  • Gosh, this is crazy cheap!

  • Gonna get me one of these!!

Also, according to xbox.com - "This console includes an HDMI output, so you can experience your games in the highest definition possible, up to 1080p (HDMI cable sold separately)."

  • The reason the Arcade pack isn't backward compatible is due to the lack of HDD. The downloads are stored on your HDD. You can get an Pro console during K Mart's Super Toy Sale for $449.
I might have to return my Wireless Controller to Big W for the $60+ I paid- but only after the sale or they'll give me $49.98.

    • Nah, I don't think that's how it works. If you've paid $60+ and your receipt says so then that's the refund you're entitled to. After that you just walk back in and buy it for $50. Ta-daa, instant $10+ in your pocket ;)

As for the Pro Console, might it still be better to get the Arcade version and "upgrade" it yourself?

      Arcade $278 + Live pack (for headset) $69 + HDD $79 + Cat5 cable $3 = $429

The only thing that'll be different is the output connector. But you'll have 12 month gold subscription on xbox live. A bit of a trade-off but if you don't have a HD TV you won't notice a difference.

Mind you, $449 for the Pro still sounds like a very good deal. I'm not sure if that includes a HDMI cable since they've revamped the packs.

The old choices used to be "Xbox 360 Core", "Xbox 360 Pro", and "Xbox 360 Elite" and now they are "Xbox 360 Arcade", "Xbox 360", and "Xbox 360 Elite". Anybody know for sure?

edit: I've posted a possible answer to the HDMI question above.

  • $278 is really cheap for the arcade i paid 378 and i thought i got it cheap, all arcades come with the standard hdmi connection so you can use any old hdmi cable, available heaps of places for like $12. The arcade comes with one wirless controller, standard Av cable and 256Mb memory card for saving games. The one disadvantage is that you can't play original Xbox games from the first console if you don't buy the hard drive and $78.84 from Big W is the cheapest your going to find one of those. The best thing about the XBox 360 arcade is that they come with the philips/Benq dvd drive and there is firmware avialable so that you can play backups of your original games.

  • I know the solution to the HDMI problem

    http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50

Ask me any question about 360/PS3 ill know the answer GUARANTEED!

    Awesome deal btw

  • Yeah. Any Arcade system (as long as it's not as old as buggery) will have a standard HDMI connector. You don't need a special Xbox 360 connector just a standard HDMI cable. I'm going to pick one of these up because my old Pro system doesn't have a HDMI connection and this is the cheapest I've ever seen.

  • Price matching time!!!! No BIG W close to where I work - so its off to JBs!

    • lol

i have modded x360 and it's the best console i've ever bought :P

ps3 is just a TOTAL RIP!

      • u can't play online wiv a modded console, so just wonderin if u use xlink kai or anythin?

  • I went in to my local BigW today to check that they would have stock of the XBOX360 tomorrow and he said they had about 15 locked away out the back. Also, they are opening at 7am on Thursday which is pretty damn early for my town (regional NSW) so they must be expecting a big rush!

  • Official Price has been slashed to AU$349…

  • Went to Big W today non in stock .
Went to EB's and got a pricematch . Took it home only to find it was a non HDMI model .
Rang a couple of other stores and they too only had non HDMI Arcade 360 packs .
They took it back no problems so that was a relief .
    I'll try JB's tonight in town .

Edit:Ended up getting one from Hardley Normals . 175W power supply and HDMI . Price matched .

  • The reason for the price cut is microsoft will be releasing a new sku. 60GB hard drive and the RROD being eliminated. A very nice price.

  • does anyone know of a PS3 for under A$500 (A$550 shipped)??

the cheapest I can find is ebay/oztion; even Amazon prices are expensive until now…

    $299 at Kmart now.

Also $299 at Harvey Norman apparently…
