New Site Design

I have some feedback on the new site design.
The NEW box that tells you when there is new comments; I found that easier to see when it was over the right hand side like previous, I do like the new look of it though

Comments

  • The good thing now is that Scotty/Moocher now have the NEW and EXPIRED tags as some members wanted these!!!

    Good job!!!

  • +4

Brown right column boxes are hurting my eyes :(

    • +1

Thanks for the feedbacks. Meanwhile, try these deals:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/clearlycontacts.com.au

:) Yeah it's still sort of work in progress. Mainly adding the [new] and [expired] and adding a bit more "shade" rather than just lines.

OP also gained an extra link on the deals page to mark the deal as expired.

      • +3

May also be the contrast between the background colour is not great vs the Blue hyperlink colours. Imo site doesn't need shades, it was quite efficient reading without it.

        • +1

+1 Please change the shading of the background boxes back to white. Contrast was better previously and easier on the eyes.

        • +1

yea i dont like it either. Just… too… weird… -> skin colour on white with blue hyperlink, not a very good combo. Try no shading. I didn't mind that. or keep the faint outline. That was not hurtful.

But, its good to see a mod still trying to find time to make the website better!

  • +1

I like it except i think the right boxes shade are too colourful

  • I loVe it!

  • +4

I'm not too big on the 'expired' and the 'new' tags. They're way too colourful and take the focus away from the post. Just my opinion though.

    • +1

Yeah, I agree. If I'm quickly looking down the page, the "new" tags always catch my attention, rather than the post text itself. They should probably be a different colour.

      • +1

I think so too. the 'new' tag has a high contract, pulling my eyes away…

  • +3

The colours are a little in my face, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

    Great work!

  • Not liking the colour scheme. Original was better. KISS

  • new indicator is a bit too loud. It was fine before. Maybe just highlight the word new and not the background.

RH column doesn't really need shading, it's obvious what it's for.

    Expired tag is useful.

  • Looks good and I'm sure it will look better with minor tweaks. The tags are helpful but stand out quite a bit.

One thing I've noticed is that the width of some elements appear to be wider than usual. For example, "Share This" is excessively wider than before. I seem to experience this in FF6 as well as IE9.

Example of what I mean: "Share this" wider than normal

  • +4

Okay. I've put in some minor tweaks to make those tags less attention-grabbing.

    • 'New' tags look good now!

    • +4

      They look great now!

I'm assuming I'll just get used to it, but the "new" tags seemed more logical in the old place?

I keep opening a post and thinking there are no new posts :)

Edit: I think the problem I'm having is I used to look in a straight line down the page, now the "new" tags can go anywhere in the page because of nested comments.

      • +3

I used to do this too. it sux now. Please put the new tags back on the RHS

        • +1

Agreed. When scrolling, the 'new' icon jumps all over the place and this makes it very hard on the eyes. They should (IMO) be back on the right side in the same spot for each post that is 'new'.

        • +5

Okay okay. You guys get what you want now.

        • +1

I can see clearly now the murk has gone

I can see all new posts to be read…

          (ahm)

        • +2

OMG that is SOOO MUCH BETTER on the right!

        • I can see clearly now the murk has gone
I can see all new posts to be read

Ever thought of setting this to music? :)

  • I like the tags also. Great idea that will be in good use.

  • +1

I don't like the new "new". It doesn't stand out.

If we must have it though, can we please have it back over on the RHS next to the "+ -", ie. right justified. Its much easier that way to scroll quickly through the thread and find the new comments.

As it stands now, its suddenly very very hard to quickly find the new comments.

  • yeah red new at the end of the line was best, way to hard to see the new posts when your searching though a thread to see what was added now… old way was better, new way looks cooler, but not as useful.

  • I like the change to the Top Deals / New Deals boxes on the right hand side as it's now easier for the eye to distinguish those sections from the rest of the page. Less keen on the boxes that appear below a deal's description, particularly the "store profile" one, as they seem a bit too dominant for their function.

  • +1

How come everything on here has a new tag, even stuff from yesterday ?

    • +2

Maybe you just need to refresh the page, then the posts are considered read?

      • +1

        oh…. :3

  • seem to be having issues with the NEW flag its not disapearing after going to a bargain multiple times… (sometimes its clearing sometimes its not)

    • +1

Some changes made to the way comments are marked as new/read earlier this morning:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53041

"new" will disappear on comments when

      1. 5 minutes after you last looked at that deal/forum post
      2. use "mark all comments read" link just before the first comment

Not too sure whether it's the most optimal solution but I'll slowly make adjustment depending on the feedback.

      • +1

This is an awesome feature, I don't have to worry about refreshing!

      • hmm guess thats one way to get around the issue where new didnt appear on the second page if you looked at the first page… cool…

also if you comment on something half way down before reading the rest of the new stuff…

good work on the coding btw…

edit: found the mark all as read… quick question… say i load the deal at 10:29:55 then click that button at 10:30:05 and someone posts at 10:30:03 guess the one posted at 10:30:03 would be marked read as well even though i havent seen it?

        • Yeah I think currently it would mark that as read as well. I should have fixed it so it would reset the time when you last load the page. Will push that out tonight/early tomorrow.

  • +1

Wow you can now visit new comments that aren't on page 1!

  • More changes today i see ???

    • +4

Yeah. Again things might be broken because it's coded by a pair of lazy programmers so report any issue here :)

      • +8

        a pair of lazy programmers

        Hey!

        • poke Android app? :D

  • Woah what happened? Change!

    • +5

I think I preferred the more subtle colourations of before. Oh well.

      • +1

Haha, as an above poster commented, the new orange is very "in your face".

  • +3

prefer the more subtle colourations of before too

    • -2

      why?

    • +2

There are some subtle people, and there are some bold people — sorry can't please everyone.

      • I'm normally against change.. facebook, news.com.au's new design etc

        but…

I have to say I like the new ozbargain look! Looks much more bold than before. T-Up!

    • yeah new one seems more functional, however old one was probably a little "prettier"

feels a little more clinical now though…:(

gonna take some getting used to to click my account instead of my name, but no biggie..

      finish on a positive…
like the constant evolution though! :D
and the tireless work to improve the site!

      • Yeah sorry can't guarantee that the next iteration is going to be better looking, but hopefully the site as a whole would improve when you look at it in a longer time scale.

Things have been planned for the rest of the year so stay put :)

        • cool sounds great… other thing I was thinking; your using AJAX to build the menus when you hover over yeah? Why not just build them with the page, would make the menus come up instatly, (at a (possible?) slight cost of more database hits) but means there wont be a delay on the menus and would be a bit faster.
or create static menus - no hit at all.

        • The menu is cached in Javascript per page view so if you hover again it would use the cached version. It all comes down to how often people are requesting those popups verses overall page views, so I can weight out the pro and con of loading the extra popup in-page verses dynamically.

  • Looks good, well done. Not exactly earth-shattering changes, not sure why people are complaining. ;)

    • Yeah, looks great. Still easy to find your way around.

  • I love the new design of the site!

    Well done! :)

  • -2

    slower to navigate though…

    • +1

In what sense? If you want to go to the New Deals section, you don't need to wait for the popup to appear — just click on Deals.

      • requires 2 different mouse movements now to got to New Deals, Freebies etc…

noticeably awkward compared to just pressing a button before…

edit : i just added some shorcuts to my browser to get around it…

  • The dark orange is a little close to poo brown for me I don't mind bold colours so a brighter orange would suite me just fine!

Edit: I do like the new layout and the few features also!! sorry probably should have started with the +ve

    • +5

you have unusually coloured poo then…

  • I like the new update. Haven't played with it much yet but that's my first impressions.
    Good work!

    • +2

Scotty has to watch it, he's been reading too many Apple posts - Look and feeling too much…..

      • +1

        iOzBargain ??

      • I'll be super worried once I start seeing more jQuery scripts causing pages to slide left/right!

  • +2

Can we have a member account setting to disable the drop down menu's?

The menu's are good though, but mostly for people new to the site I guess.

    • +1

better still, just give us some widgets to design out own customised Ozbargain page, with our own choice of colours…

      • .. with our own choice of colours… and bargains :)

    • +1

neg vote to drop down menus…. looks clean and tidy, but is much more annoying to navigate on.

  • The site design is great guys. Not to fond of the previous or new logo, but that's about it. It saves a lot of space and its minimalist. Love it. Keep up the good work!

  • What happened to the tags page? I always used them for my RSS feeds. Please bring it back.

    • Still here, although I am not sure what people are using it for, since "tagging" is a bit unregulated at the moment. Do you mind telling us how you are using it?

      • I simply get all the popular tags that are used (i.e. If I want iTunes cards, I put all the related 'popular' tags in my RSS reader so I don't miss any, such as iTunes, iPhone, iPad, gift cards etc. [chances are I'll miss one or two because some people don't know how to tag properly, but it beats checking up ozbargain every single hour]) and put it in an RSS feed and when I see what I'm looking for I then go to the related ozbargain page. I know tags are not moderated very well, but I prefer missing a minority of bargains im looking for than seeing all of them by checking ozbargain every single time and looking through a huge list of bargains that I'm not looking for. I get these RSS feeds by clicking on the tag and then clicking on the rss button on the bottom of the page.

        Cheers

  • +3

Please bring back the "New Deal Icon" easier so it is easier to click on PCs and smartphones.

    • +1

Actually if you click on "Deals" at the top, it goes to the new deals page. Alternatively the first 4 items in the drop-down menu:

      • New Deals <— is this the one you are looking for?
      • Freebies <— old freebies page
      • Popular Deals <— old popular page
      • Deals Expiring Soon <— listing out the deals that are expiring today
  • Under New Deals…..
The day labels need to be bigger/highlighted better (for instance "today" and "yesterday") as you scroll down the deals… they get lost in the other messages (like "duplicate" and other mod adjustments).

It would be nice to be able to scroll down and easily see the deals posted for each day (for those people who come back on a daily basis, or those that have missed a day).

The feature is already there, its just that the font needs changing.

    • Okay sure. The intention was to not distracting people from the deals so the date separators are subtle. I'll take a look.

  • +2

Can we have some switchable themes? Maybe have a OzbargainPlus Greasemonkey script too (Similar to WP+?)

    • switchable themes?

It does add complexity — mainly that we need to check new features are working on multiple themes, etc.

      GreaseMonkey

Or user CSS. Nothing stopping you guys from adding your own scripts to alter the CSS or DOM in anyway. However, these won't be supported — it's just too hard for me to check everyone's greasemonkey scripts are still working before pushing out new changes. So you are on your own :)

      WP+

Sorry not too sure what it does. If it's a community thing from Whirlpool, I am not sure what Simon @ Whirlpool needs to do to support it. Nothing stopping the keen ones here creating their own scripts, but again, those won't be supported and sorry if new changes break things.

    • I was going to suggest this. I think it would be a good way to keep the majority of people happy.

  • +1

I like the style of the new bar at the top, and the grey at the bottom. Looks good!

    • Same. I also like its subtlety. Didn't even notice it at first! :P

  • Thanks Scotty. I really like the new style of site. Its quite refreshing. Takes less space on top. Account-> Comments is my favourite. Earlier I have to click thrice to get there to see any new comments to deals I commented.

    Keep up the good work.

  • I hate change. I'm sure I'll get over it but please bring back the 'new deals' button.

    Keep up the great work!

    • +1

Just click on Deals — same thing. Don't even need to wait for the popup to come up.

  • Some more advice

    1. Make the forum page theme consistent with the rest of the website.
    2. When you are on the profile page, the bar that has 'comments, view, edit etc.' looks like a bar that is connected to some other box, in other words that bottom of that orange bar has square corners, make them rounded corners.
    3. The CSS footer looks a bit squashed with the trademarks and such expand it a bit more.
    4. Make the search bar in the header the same width as the right hand boxes on the side 'top deals, new deals, who's online etc.'
    5. Give the old default profile icon a nice web 2.0 feel ;)
    6. Change this RSS icon to something that fits the site, it looks very cheap and clunky - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/files/images/feed-icon.png
    7. When I see my own comments that have the box around them, they aren't rounded corners.
    8. This may be going too far, but could you make profile pictures with rounded corners from now on?

    I know, I'm a theme consistency freak.

  • I usually give constructive criticisms, but this one just makes me purely sad.

What was wrong with the previous design? Hiding the login means extra steps to login. You guys should revert that.

    • I just tried it.
Had a bit of trouble logging in because I was relying on the browser auto-complete for username/password.
As soon as I selected my username for it to prefill, it wiped both fields when it disappears.

      Firefox 7.0

    • +2

What's the problem with the previous design? Well, the 1990s wanted their theme back.

      • If you think about it, this site is created by el' cheapos for the even el cheapiers'.
That means no budget for designers.

        True ozbargainer!

  • +1

Great work, dude! I have no problems.

  • +1

For those of you who find the popup menu makes you to pull your hair out (raises hand), I have a fix.

Using Chrome and Adblock, go to manually edit filters

    add this

    ozbargain.com.au###menupopup

Then it will be popup free and I will retain my hair! :D

The new design is awesome now, the deals link does one thing now, goes to "new deals". :)

  • Since the change, waiting for Google ads has slowed things down a lot at my end. Cookies/no cookies /adblock, makes no difference.

    • Not sure what browser you have, but download AdBlock as an add-on as it will remove Google Ads(as well as other ads)

      • I cringe when I see PCs without adblock, and am amazed at how many ads there are!

        • Don't encourage people to use Adblock, then we have to suffer the consequences of ads on videos! Keep adblock a secret!

  • +2

Love the new site design, has a nice 'clean' feel to it.

The mobile experience is fantastic … well done!

  • top bar at the top is shonky, ugly, whatever, just doesn't feel like ozbargain anymore, I feel alienated from it now

    • No way, the orange is funk-eeeeee ;)

      • Funk \Funk\, v. t.
        1. To envelop with an offensive smell or smoke. [Obs.] —King. [1913 Webster]

        2. To funk at; to flinch at; to shrink from (a thing or person); as, to funk a task. [Colloq.] [Webster 1913 Suppl.]

        3. To frighten; to cause to flinch. [Colloq.] [Webster 1913 Suppl.]

        -eeeee ;)

More seriously, still would prefer a subtler colour and the login thing is a bit annoying. Will need to play with it a bit.
