The portability and size makes it worth keeping even if the ink is a bit expensive and you don't print a lot.

I believe so. I personally needed a scanner more than the printer but portable scanners are really expensive and approx the same price so this seemed perfect for me.

This is a niche product and if you don't need to travel with it then it's definitely not worth $300 and will cost you far more in running costs than a normal ink jet.
It definitely is, but more than travel my requirements were a scanner with auto doc feeder and compact size. Printer is a bonus for me.
