2 weeks ago local butchers were charging $16.99 a kilo because "supply shortage".

    • +16

And now you know which businesses to boycott going forward for opportunistic price gouging.

It is disgraceful that so many businesses that usually cry poor outside of the current situation were and still are so willing to price gouge if the opportunity arises.

      • +5

I know a couple of butchers. There was a genuine shortage. You’ve gotta keep in mind it takes a while for cattle to end up as a packet of mince on the supermarket shelf and when people were bulk buying at one point it starved the whole supply chain until the producers could get more cattle to market. now the surge is over there is an excess supply which is why it’s cheaper.

        • Doesn't excuse the price gouging, if they sold out because everyone panic bought then fine, just wait to get more back in stock. They don't need to charge ridiculous amounts for it. Hence the boycott.

          • @toobzy: Except if their suppliers are charging more for whatever reasons. Maybe they're slaughtering cattle early reducing their profits if they keep the price the same.

This is literally how supply and demand works as taught in year 8 or 9…

            • @whitty: Nope. We are in a similar industry and all of our suppliers were and still charging same price as before covid19. That is just a bunch of lies

              • +1

@michaelTito: Well my family friends who run a farm for beef+milk said they had to charge more to help offset their loss on the milk.
They also had to pick up the load for the other major supplier for local supplier because they were ill with covid.

                • @[Deactivated]: How about now? Are they still charging more?

                  • +1

@michaelTito: No, They don't need to charge more now. The other major supplier has recovered, milk is slowly selling again (kinda) and they also came to an agreement with some further out farms to aid supply and decrease cost back to normal.

                    • @[Deactivated]: So there were no supply shortage as most butchers make it out to be?

                      • +1

@michaelTito: There was but it wasn't due to actual shortage of beef cattle.
It was a shortage of people working and putting a strain on the others.

                        • +1

@[Deactivated]: I'm glad they recovered from the virus. We all can go back to paying normal price now.

Two weeks ago all the coles around me was trying to get rid their excess mince for $3/kg, beef, lamb, chicken you name it.

      • Yep definately worthwhile to check out in the next grocery run. It's excess stock being discounted.

      • +5

They were stocking up due to the panic buying. Then the lockdown started, world didn't end, so lots of stock left on the shelves

        • The limits were put in place. Then they found out just how many people regularly buy more than a couple packets.

  • +8

Is it pasta it's used by date?

    I'll let myself out.

  • +4

That's not the premium one, it's equivalent to coles 3 star one. The premium one has only 5% fat

    • -1

I said it's 'a more premium type' - yep there is a lower fat option.

They also had other products being discounted including Turkey and vegan mince if you're into that aha so best to check it out!

    • +9

more fat the better in mince or it tastes too dry

    • +1

Yes this is 3 star mince. Not premium at all.

      4 star is 10% fat

      5 star is 5% fat

      • +3

        Imo it's still decent for $1.88 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +7

          Hey you dropped this \

          • @Chickenleg: Whaaat how does it work for you. I've tried editing it so many times and it didn't show ¯_(ツ)_/¯

              @knight321: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

              • +1

                @djprima: Third time lucky ¯_(ツ)_/¯

edit: Ok - now i'm thinking that someones playing games with me :P I literally copied your shrug face

                • +4

@knight321: ¯\_(ツ)_¯ oh no it happened to me too

                • +4

@knight321: I can imagine some mod just editing your comments as you put them hahaha

                • +2

                  @knight321: Poor fella ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • +4

Eat this and then go for a jog around the park.

    • +4

You could drain off a lot of the fat while cooking it.

  • Same at Woolworths Marrickille - except they were $2.60 something. The guy was mis-labelling the premium mince too.

  • +1

Damn, and I thought I got a bargain at $5/kg.

  • Don't they always put these reduced stickers when the food is near expiry, for example, today is 15/04/2020 and this expires on 17/04/2020. Only 2 days till expiry so they put a decent discount, doubt this will be the case when they put a new batch in :/

    • +1

Yep hence why it's a steal! Lots of stores have excess stock from the increased demand so now they're trying to clear it all out before expiry otherwise it'll just get thrown away.

      • If only they tried harder. I always see woolies and coles display meat that expires tomorrow at full price because they are too lazy to mark them down.

        • +1

Make an effort yourself, take the food up to them, tell em it expires tomorrow and they're 90% going to discount it for you on the spot.

    • Yeah pretty typical but usually with bread and things like that. Not often you see it on meat you can easily freeze and use whenever

  • People stopped buying cause they have money no more

  • +1

Damn you flushcomb road blacktown woolies!

I got mine for $3 and best before the next day. hahaha but still $3 is really good, cooked some burgers

  • +1

This virus (while distasteful to say) is saving me money.

To turn 3 star into 4 star drain the fat.

    • Don't waste it tho

  • +2

If you saw the amount of fat that went into regular mince you'd never buy it again. Source: I'm a butcher.

    • +2

Probably less than my body fat.

  • what time during the day do they usually bring out short dated stuff? lunch time?

    • +1

It was between 6-7 pm yesterday when they were filling the fridge up, not sure if that's everyday though.

  • Any update if they have them this morning. Don’t want to drive unnecessarily. Did anyone spot these around Kellyville today?

    • +1

      Will check again later today.

      • +1

Managed to snap several packets from Kellyville North woolies, for $2/kg with 17/4 use by date (but that doesn’t matter if you freeze it right away). Local pet farm sells pet mince for almost $4/kg but hasn’t had pet mince for several months now. Pet stores charge arm and a leg for pet mince so $2/kg is a baaaargaaain (and my furry child loves it)!

    • +1

Just went in store and looks like it's been ozbargained unless they put more out later.

  • +1

Fresh out of discounted mince when I checked in the evening, I just got the consolidation prize, 3 cooked Chinese box meals all for $5 buckeroos

    • +1

So they consolidated 3 meals for $5? Nice!

I wonder what the consolation prize is.
