Nexium 20mg 14 Pack $8.99 (Normally $16.99) @ Chemist Warehouse

250

A goodie for all my fellow reflux sufferers!

The store had 16.99 on but scanned at 8.99. Cheaper than the 7 model.

Obviously check with your doctor before purchasing if you haven't before.

FYI - You can get a 30 pack of the same stuff via prescription. About $8.50 from Chemist Warehouse.

Can also get 40mg via subscription. I find the 20mg isn't as effective. Not sure if I can just take two of them haha

Yeah I find I have to take 20mg everyday. 40mg every other day. Depends on the individual.

      • I used to take once a day but noticed that not needed. Now I take 20mg every 3 days. I think as @NEO said depends on the individual

    • Dayum! Good tip

  • Damn!! gotta get some

FYI, recent research indicates this stuff is really not great long-term, as it's been linked to heart disease, kidney disease and stomach cancer.

Not saying don't use it. Just don't use it long-term (at least without medical supervision)

This has always worried me but I have no choice. I have constant acid reflux and no idea of alternatives :(

See your doctor. If you need to take Nexium often, you are likely to be low in magnesium and a good quality magnesium supplement will help you.

Drinking excessive amounts of coffee can cause the GERD/Reflux problem as it prevents magnesium absorbtion.

        • Been to two different doctors. Had an endoscopy, found nothing. Had a helicobacter pylori test, negative also.

Thanks for the information regarding magnesium, I'll look into it and try!

          • +1

@neo: yeah, but did they do an Esophageal manometry test? If not, that will tell you all you need to know. Which will confirm the need for surgery or not.

nissen fundoplication is the only way forward then, get a few opinions from different surgeons. There are different ways they can do the operation (different wraps and the use of mesh etc)

          • @neo: Removed* Duplication

          • @neo: No worries, it will take you about 6-8 weeks for magnesium supplementation to have any effects, so don't stop taking it after 2 weeks thinking it's not working.

        • Bullshit, get a frakkin blood test before taking expensive urine additives.

Some of the advice in here needs to be deleted as old wives tales.

          SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

I was the same, no choice. My Dr had me on the prescription version for 2 years. She would just keep on prescribing it, even though its suppose to be for short term use ie. 3 months or something. It was so bad that I had liquid at the back of my throat regularly, super painful backs after sleeping, heartburn like theres no tomorrow etc. One day by chance my regular Dr was sick, so I saw another Dr at the same clinic. They said I shouldn't be on that medication for so long and next step was to get endoscope to check if everything was okay. Oddly enough I was cured after I had endoscopy and the surgeon said everything looks ok, theres nothing wrong with you. I havent had major symptoms for about 10 years so far.. For me the placebo effect was real.

      • Have you tried apple cider vinegar (with the mother version). Bit of that diluted with warm water and maybe some honey.

        • +1

yep that didnt work for me, but I do like apple cider vinegar on my chips :P

Defo see more than 1 doc and also be very aware of the risk of esophageal cancer due to constant reflux

      • Yep aware of that. Didnt think much about it since I havent had reflux issues for 10 years now and no concerns raised when I had endoscopy back then.

        • yea i had it for 10 odd also but my endoscopy showed a little bit of scarring but hopefully now have it under control whilst carry on looking for the cause

Been using somac for 10 years. I have Barrett's esophagus, get tested every couple of years been ok so far.

    • I started getting regular heartburn and acid reflux last year and went to see a specialist.

I've been on pantoprazole for a few months and take 20mg daily.

I did an endoscopy and they found nothing.

Then did a gastric emptying study and they found that I have gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying). The doctor said there is no real cure and told me to start a grazing diet, ie eat smaller, more frequent meals than the standard three meals a day. I haven't been able to transition into that diet.

The pantoprazole stopped working effectively and I went onto Nexium, 20mg every two days.

I think I need to either start the grazing diet or try something completely different.

Those side effects don't look good at all.

        Are you overweight at all?

        You should try keto.

        • +1

Not at all. I'm 173cm and 60kg so probably underweight if anything.

      • +1

Nissen fundoplication surgery helps the issue with delayed stomach emptying. You probably have this problem because your LES isn't working properly, and so you have less pressure in your stomach to tell your stomach to empty at a normal rate.

I had the same problem, and my LES basically didn't even work anymore, it can even affect your swallowing, amongst a whole host of other symptoms. One problem causes another and so on.

I've had the surgery, it was the only thing that helped.

I'm 6ft, 85kg and fit. There is no rhyme or reason for these things sometimes.

    cheers
i have to take this all the time

This sort of stuff in terrible in my opinion, only as a last resort.

I solved it myself by losing weight, something not even my doctor suggested.

Keto also removed the most severe symptoms I was having before I had lost the weight as well.

I had a heavy reliance on Nexium for 15 plus years and didn't think it was ever possible to ever get off them. But after reading into the serious long term side effects about 3 or 4 years ago I gradually weaned myself off over a period of time, I think cutting out carbs and sugary foods also helped a lot in being able to get off them.

I'd highly recommend the below article if you are on Nexium or any other PPI's.

I drink a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar with a cup of warm water every morning about half an hour before breakfast and have never had acid reflux since. No side effects.

    • thanks ill try that.

    • I did try this as well. what's your mixing percentage? I used to mix 1 table spoon of Apple Cider Vinegar into a cup of warm water.

    • Make sure that it's with the mother version. Have heard that it works very well.

  • This stuff does wonders for me when im hungover.

  • i think this is the only brand that is lactose free that i can take. Had an endoscopy, found out that i'm lactose intolerant and had inflamed stomach lining. doctor reckons i probably have to take it for the rest of my life.

    • Read my post mate.

  • Does bicarbonate soda help?

    • yes but only few hours as far as I know. I tried and found it is not good for long hours. It is like Gaviscon if you like.

  • Just FYI

    https://www.zanzole24hr.com.au/zanzole-24hr/

This is a generic of the same medicine that's on the market OTC (not made by the original manufacturer).

Maybe it will be found to be better value down the track, compared to branded Nexium.

So far I can't find any evidence of that, but time will tell.
