anyone flown with airasia before? had a friend come down from london to melb with them and they said it definately lives up to the name 'scare asia' :P but you get what you pay for i guess

    • +1

I've been using them for my long-weekend Bali trips since they opened. It's a short trip though, only 3-4 hours. No serious problems.

The worst AA flight I've been on was to New Delhi with a KL stopover, but that was 'cause the plane was filled with people who apparently hadn't heard of deodorant.

      • -8

'Scare Asia' is not deserved. Probably thought up by some racist bigot.

        • +1

          Why neg the deal then?

        • -1

Why on earth is this a reply to me?

        • Tried to get it closer to Bemybubble's post :) It was quite obviously not for you!

j4ck: see below for why I negged it

        • isn't racist bigot one in the same? :P wouldn't say its racist or bigotory at all IMO, just a pun on words :/

      • Ooohhhh, you were attention whoring!

        :P

    • +2

really? i only heard good things about them. well, at least they're cheap!
not like qantas… expensive and you get food poisoning.

      • Are they that bad? They're our only national carrier. I'd still expect extreme amount of difference from these cheapo ryan-air model services

        • I have had more legroom on AA from PER - KL compared to Qantas from PER - Brisbane

    • +4

I've flown with them twice return to London via KL.
The seats are definitely smaller than usual. Other than that, no problems. In-flight entertainment system only costs about $10. Meals are cheap and kinda tasty (esp if you like Nasi Lemak), and service is friendly. Planes always seemed very safe and clean. Their fleet is pretty young, so that's a bonus.

      • regarding seat widths, its because they do 9 seats across in a 3+3+3 configuration, compared to the 8 seats in 2+4+2 that you normally get on an A330 in economy.

Fitting an extra seat in horizontally would make a huge difference to the economics of the flight and has gotta be one of the main reasons they are cheaper.

        • same with the 3-4-3 on 777s, sadly its some of the premium airlines does this as well. Emirates and Air NZ I am pointing at you.

    • as above, seats are definitely uncomfortable, but aside from that, airasia is fine.

if airasia is significantly cheaper (sale flights), i would go with them everytime. definitely for shorter flights (ie. to asia)…and probably for long haul flights too…

i'm happy to be uncomfortable for a few hours, and spend more money at my destination…but a friend of mine is the complete opposite. depends what you value.

    • Done a few intra-asia flights with them - great value, clean planes, always on time, so no complaints here.

    • I've flown with them for a few years now, well over 50 flights in that time, and can't recall a time when I was dissatisfied.

But as you say, you get what you pay for, so go in with no expectations to avoid any disappointments ;-)

    • i love airasia. flown around asia with them twice now. sweet prices. but im a simple person. its so extremely subjective.

    • Flew in the premium seats from KL to New Delhi. Fantastically comfortable. One of the rare flights where I could stretch out and get some sleep. Brand new plane and very friendly staff. The regular economy class seats are meant to be quite cramped however. Most airlines fit 9 across on Airbus A330s but AA squeezes in 10.

    • I'm 189cm and have no problems in their seats. I've flown with them to London return.

      I'll fly with them again.

The budget airport in KL is a bit of a dump though.

There is a lounge you pay for that has showers there. Impressively the people working at the information desk didn't know this though.

  • I flew on 8 flights with them in April and didn't have an issue. Every flight was on time. The stewardesses (didn't see any males) were all extremely friendly. Food and drink were fairly cheap. For a budget airline I couldn't fault them.

The thing to remember is that Air Asia are a budget airline, just like Jetstar and Tiger. There's no entertainment, the seats are passably comfortable. But not once on 8 flights was I concerned about my safety or have any real complaints and will fly with them again (in fact I have my next holiday booked with them for Jan).

  • how much sydney to KL tho?

    • +3

considering they don't fly to Sydney, probably a lot.

    • Don't you guys who live in Sydney realise that Sydney is not part of Australia in the eyes of budget airlines. AA flies to 4 Australia cities but Sydney. Sydney is the most populated and dense Australian city, yes, a lot more than Melbourne. Melbourne has more budget airlines (AA, Tiger, Jetstar) flying to more destinations than what Sydney has. Sydney has significant more annual airport passenger and aircraft movement than the 2 Melbourne airports combined. Yet, I don't understand why all the budget airlines departing Melbourne have a lot more destinations on offer than departing from Sydney.

Don’t get me wrong, I also live in Sydney which is not part of Australia in the eyes of budget airlines.

      • Sydney airport is very expensive for airlines + the Malaysian gov won't allow AA to fly to Sydney as they part own the Malaysian national carrier and don't want the competition.

        • This.

The Malaysian Government has a stranglehold on the industry and won't allow budget airlines to fly in from Sydney, undercutting their extremely profitable Sydney-KL run on Malaysian Airlines.

Nothing like government sanctified corruption and monopolies. How this isn't seen as official corruption when any non-governmental body would be paying millions in anti-trust fines for doing the exact same thing is beyond me.

        • +1

not just this, but limited slots due to curfew means that slots are subject to the rules of supply and demand - ie they are expensive and don't suit the LCC model.

        • that news are last year news, more than 1 year ago. since MA has bought some share on MAS, it is getting hard for AA for flying from KL - Syd. AA should just fly Bali - Syd, make bali as their hub to KL.

  • +2

Melb to KL $319!!! …what happened to $199 :( hehe …not as cheap as it has been in past …as person above i have not had any problems with Air Asia …maybe a 30min delay once …seats are fine, unless overweight

    • +1

That's what I thought too! So much more expensive than the previous sales. Guess good things never last!

      • +1

yeah so sad, although waiting 8-9 months for a holiday can be annoying anyway :D …now sometimes better off flying malaysia airlines with meals and baggage included

        • +1

I like the wait. My bali trip (5 star accom etc) is completely paid off for and should have about $3-4K spending money saved too. The waiting gives you time to pick off the deals and save a huge amount and have everything paid for before you get there.

    • They do different sales and do different things. This sale doesn't include leaving from Melb or GC. Only Perth and Darwin and then only to Bali.

Maybe the next sale will be different.

  • +7

A little tip - if you are on their longer haul flights (e.g. Gold coast to KL) then pre-book the seats towards the back of the plane by the windows where the seat configuration is 2-3-2 instead of further forward where it is 3-3-3. Seems to give you a lot more space.

    • good tip mate! yay!

  • Are those prices one-way or round-trip? If it's round-trip, then it's a good price. But I suspect it's only one-way fares, in which case it's definitely not "on sale".

My trip this Nov (booked in Mar) costed $216 OOL-KUL (incl baggage), and $129 KUL-MEL (incl baggage).

    • +2

The prices are one way - but prices back to Aus from KL are usually alot cheaper than flying to KL.
To put in my two bobs worth, Air Asia has opened up the world to me. We've done 47 flights now over the last five years and have never had a bad experience.

I'm 185cm and 100kgs and never feel uncomfortable in the seats. Usually we score a spare seat next to us so my wife can spread out and sleep.

The only thing is sometimes their red-eye flight home from KL is cold, so make sure you don't get on in boardies and a T or you'll regret it. I usually go jeans, socks and a long sleeve shirt just to be safe!

      • 47 is a lot of flights!

        • +2

Air Asia is a lot of cheap!

Plus, once you get to KL, with all their destinations, you usually chalk up 5/6 flights a trip popping from city to city.
A sale we got last Nov is getting us to Laos this weekend for $330.00 return. (Perth - KL - Vietiane - KL - Perth)

This is also a good site to plan your trip, although not sure how quickly it updates during the sale period?

          http://www.airasiaplus.com/

      • +1

Ha! Talking about red eye flights. I live in Sydney, so I need to catch a red-eye flight to OOL in order to make the 9:30am AAX flight to KUL, means getting up at 4am. Other times I'd catch the last flight out of Syd and camp overnight at the YHA drinking their free instant coffee all night.

I'd do the sleepover in MEL, however flights out of OOL usually works out cheaper for me.

        • get the NSW/Federal government to sort out badgerys creek and sydney might start seeing more LCC's.

Until then its going to be severely constrainted.

        • Too much money is being made off Kingsford Smith and the NIMBYists will ensure an airport will not be built anywhere near them. A second Sydney airport will never happen.

      • airasiaplus so far is very reliable, but sometimes you need to refresh to show some prices which were hidden because of error

  • I ALWAYS fly AA and usually get their $250 RETURN MEL-KL tickets.
I will happily sacrifice a bit of comfort and save myself $600+ which can go to a nicer hotel or shopping.
Catch the night flights or go when you're tired.
You'll be able to sleep easier.. have a glass of wine too ;)

    • usually? return for $250?

  • flown with AA a few times, always been great.

We had flights from BKK to HKG and Vietnam which were booked separately (big risk) within 1-2hrs of each other but none of the flights were delayed

  • +1

    I also recommend checking this - http://www.airasia.com/au/en/bargainhunter.page

It usually takes us upto a couple of hours to finalise all the flights we want, with a couple of laptops running, usually just using the mobile site on the web browser.

  • +1

AA use to be so much cheaper. even with sales it works out mb 20% cheaper plus now they happen to chuck on fees and taxes at the end instead of being included. i flew AA Melb to UK return for 700$ a year ago. With this sale your looking at atleast 1200$.. still cheaper but when you think about it for extra 20% you can travel in comfort so not really worth the hassle

    • +1

look at flights with individual legs and ways. I've found flights aren't as cheap when you search Melb - London return. Rather you should search Melb - KL, KL - London and then the return leg all separately. A little more time consuming but the prices can be significantly cheaper.

      • agreed, I'll save $500-600 (premium) by splitting the flight from MEL > LDN.
Make sure you get your times right and the only difference is you need to collect your bag and recheck in at KL. They use to check it all the way but have been advised not to do that any more on split flights.

And I also agree they use to be cheaper, I need a 20% sale to get the prices I was paying previously.

  • +1

another tips on seating, pay extra for extra legroom seats is definitely worth the money.

  • +1

Anyone try the optiontown pathway of getting discount upgrade to AirAsia premium? Have bought them for a couple of legs of my upcoming trip but no guarantee if I'll get the upgrade.

    • It used to only be ~ $75 a leg, now is upto ~ $150.
Probably worth it if you value your sleep, but an emergency row with some sleeping tablets might be a better bet for a long haul.

From all I've spoken to though, the premium seats are heavenly, very easy for someone even over 6ft to stretch out and sleep.

  • I'm in Sydney. Want to go to Paris. How much would it cost to fly there December, and return January?

  • so from melbourne to london it's about 1200 all up with airasia but you can get ~1300 dollar flights with a full service carrier through statravel etc. absolutely not worth it.

    • +2

Fly with the majors. Tell Air Asia that they are a budget airline and must sell their tickets considerably below the full service airlines to get your business.

      • I agreed, consider the budget airlines need to pay for food, luggage, blanket!

  • Used to be $250 return including bags and taxes Mel-KL-Mel

They have probably realised that Aussies generally don't care about money and the lowest price is around double that now.

The fact that their flights are so much cheap within Asia tells you that. The difference used to be much smaller.

Vote with your feet if you don't want to pay more.

    • +1

So, this is the result of AA monopoly

      http://malaysia-today.net/mtcolumns/newscommentaries/42673-w…

AA might jack up the price and will not be the same in the past

    • It STILL can be $250 return. During the last sale it was $261 return from KL. This sale is not on ALL flights just some flights. They have enough big sales through out the year as it is. This is more just for select routes they clearly need more bums on seats for.

  • Neil i have used optiontown for the upgrade and got it both times!! KL-London and return… SO worth it! they tell you up to 4 hours before…. and usually re send the itinery if you have been upgraded.

    • Hope I at least get the KL-London legs. Wish I knew about it beforehand as I already paid for bag, meal and seat fees which I assume don't get refunded.

      • Unfortunately your assumption is correct.

  • +1

$319 for MEL-KUL…that is the most expensive 'sale' price yet. Jetstar are now cheaper with their sale fares AND they actually fly out of Sydney AND are a notch above AA IMO.

AA were great when they launched with their $59 and $99 airfares to KUL, but now they are not so 'budget'.

    • +1

Many of AA's airfares were ridiculously cheap and completely unsustainable loss leaders to gather market share. Flying 6500km really shouldn't be so cheap.

      • Well they've just lost my market share

      • I searched for flight just a week or two earlier
$319 is their NORMAL "promo price"

so for MELB, this is clearly not a bargain!

  • +2

It is getting more and more expensive. I don't bother flying with them anymore. Their total price after you added meal, check-in luggage and get slugged for Credit Card fee will be close to or even higher than full service airlines (i.e Malaysia). With their current price, I don't see any reason to pay full price for a "budget" service. You'd better fly with a full service airlines.

FYI, I've got return ticket from the last sale with Malaysia Airlines MEL-SGN (via KL) for $590, that is including 30kg check-in, meals (unlimited drink).

    • I agreed, people should choose full service airline rather than AA!
      $319(Melb to KL) + meal + drink + luggage + blanket + fees + extra = expensive!!!!!

  • +1

Travel period is up to 27 Oct 2012. They must be desperate to raise cash that they are now selling tickets 13 months ahead. I guess they need the money to pay for all the sports teams they are now sponsoring.

    • +1

buying ticket 13months ahead at $319 is hardly a bargain to me.

  • Per-KUL isn't that cheap - $249 one way? I'm not sure if that's before the baggage, fuel surcharge and all the other BS, but lately when I had a look they added all that on afterwards. Made it not so cheap in the end.

    • AA doesn't add those extras as a general rule.

I didn't vote negative because it's an OK special. This special isn't, uh, that special and AA have had better specials (e.g. $100-$200 return to Bali from Perth). For example, I got $200 return to Bali in January and $300 return over the Easter holidays on an earlier special, and this special is signficantly more than that.

It's better than the regular prices, but not as good as some of their other specials. So… no vote.

    • They even bring back the fuel surcharge, introduce the Credit Card fee (so-called "Conveniece Fee") (not sure about admin fee), AA is getting worse and worse.

  • sydney to bali with Air asia :

sydney to perth return flight with virgin, lucky if i can get return for $300
perth to bali return flight with air asia = $300
not include meal, baggage and other surcharge, in total minimum is $600 for basic cost.

compare with zuji where garuda running the promotion now $592.28, included tax, meal, no credit card surcharge, baggage allowance.

    i don't think this is a bargain.

  • The reason the MEL/OOL prices are higher is that this sale only lists PER and DRW as official sale fares. I'd expect a followup AirAsia X sale soon. Source: http://www.airasia.com/au/en/promotion/rr1780510.page

  • -1

I thought the gov't made it illegal a while ago to hide the fuel surcharge and airport taxes etc? Is it just because AA are not an Australian company that they can get away with this?

    • it is still illegal, in australia your ads should included all taxes, not sure with the surchages

    • They're not hiding them. The costs are included in the prices. You're voting negative based on an erroneous and stupid assumption.

      • No, I am voting negative based on my previous post. However, the taxes and fuel levy and credit card payment fee isn't included in the price - you cannot get a ticket for the advertised $249 Per-KUL one way. They are not hidden, but they are only revealed once you've put in your details etc.

        • Yeah. I just tried that. Fuel surcharge and tax included. I have no idea what you're looking at.

        • Flights from Australia are all included but flights from KL or other asian destinations aren't.

        • you must be looking from AA's ASIA web site
if you nevigate your setting to AU(Australia)
          the taxes are included!

  • Anyone get on for a booking?
I keep getting a four oh four :/

    • I can get to the booking page but no further. Found 230rm KL-PER but not sure what taxes add to that.

  • we just went from perth to Bali $38 a ticket :) (and $38 return)

we were charged airport tax and fees and baggage :0 but it was still only
$710 all up for 4 of us.

this sale they are $140 :(

I still want to book them but its hard to know what your doing in a years time :)

  • Booked 2 seats KL to Phuket for 100 baht each plus taxes, $66 all-up, about what I pay for the taxi between home and airport.
