I opened a support ticket, and got this response:

        • +5

          It's free…

    • +4

      so…?
i bet that you have a usb in your house with at least a logo on it
      e.g. Sandisk, LG, Sony, etc

      • +4

No I sand them off as soon as I get home, and write "Steeeve" on everything.

It makes warranty claims awkward but I love that monkey…

        • +1

so matty, your real name is bob then? =p

        • +1

Ahhh no Stitchy, not that steve the monkey. Watch Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs.

+1 for adding another Steve the Monkey to my life though :)

  • +1

So, how do you get the usb? I signed up and they didn't ask for an address or anything

    • +17

      Spam for life.

    • +1

      Ugh… pack of ****s…
      Thanks for pointing this out

    • +1

Dont do it folks… it's not worth the $4 crappy USB stick to potentially lose privacy. Massive neg from me.

    • Looking over someone's shoulder, I noticed that one turns Off 3rd Party messages here:

Hover over "My Account" & select "Preferences"

Say No to lots & lots of things… (as you will)

…then - at the very bottom - say No to 3rd Party Messages.

      Q.E.D.

  • +2

I'm not gonna bother with this, seems a bit sketchy(you can tell by the website itself)

  • +1

hope they are not subscribing you for premium sms which is $5-$6 per sms every week/fortnight/month..careful!

    • +1

Pretty sure that's illegal to do now.
It's an Aussie site isn't it?

      • -1

Oh I'm sorry, I thought this was America.

  • +8

I'm a user of SMSFUN.com.au and i've used it for over 1 year now. Its just FREE 3 sms per number/day. I've nvr received any spam emails / spam sms. And you WON'T get charged to your mobile phone!!!!! The only way you'll get charge is if you provide them your credit card detail to "purchase sms". I'm already existing member, so i cant sign up again :( no free usb for me :(

    OH, and i DON'T work/associated with them.

    • +1

Not true - they can charge to your phone service provider since they have you mobile number. You will see charges on your phone bill, not credit card bill.

I have been scammed once before.

    • -4

What are those 3 sms a day if they are not spam.

If I got 3 sms a day from any corporation, no matter what it contains, I would consider that spam. No corporation needs to sms people that often.

      • +4

You can send 3 free sms a day. You don't receive 3 a day.

      • You get to send three free sms per day….
        Not spammed 3…..

Can we combine this with the free Optus credit here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53311 ?

    • +1

Searched high and low and cannot see a way of reusing the supplied activation code. AFAIK you need to follow either the Optus or USB signup for new SMSfun account process, get your activation code, and enter it in the process you have chosen. I do not see a way of reusing that activation code in the process you did not use.

Hope someone can prove me wrong. Kept my activation code just in case.

    • Yes- http://www.smsfun.com.au/switch-how.php?id=mailer69
You need an active mobile number to port.
You need to register with SMSFun on that mobile (you can have more than 1 account)

I am thinking of activating a $2 Vodafone sim I have, register with SMSFun. They will txt the code to confirm my Vodaphone mobile.
      Then port to Optus
SMSFun say they are told of the port to Optus & then offer me $100 credit or points, gold membership, and maybe win prizes like an iPhone.

"If you move your number to Optus before September 30; you will receive 1,000 Joobz. As an example, 1,000 Joobz is equal to 3 x $30 Optus prepaid recharge vouchers, or 2 x $50 Optus prepaid vouchers, or even $90 worth of Woolworths or Coles gift cards." I like $90 worth of shopping!

      • You need to port by 30th for goodies.
I tried using a new activated $2 Vodafone sim with no credit - but you need to add credit before it will register with SMSFun. Can get $2 Optus SIM & add credit. But need to choose a plan. That means adding $29+ to Optus as well! ($2Days pre-paid plan has $10 option)
You need to join SMSFun 48hrs before porting!
They say you will be notified within 7 days of them detecting porting.

  • Sell away your soul for a USB, muhahahahahahaha.

  • +2

I've received the activation code and entered online, but it didn't ask for my address. I feel so dumb, giving up my mobile number for nothing :(

    • Had the same problem………i signed up for the free USB…….don't care it is non-branded one

    • Yep…… I signed up but still nothing about the freebie….. feeling ripped off.

      • +1

        Good luck with spam lol

  • +1

This sounds like a scam to me.
They don't ask your details but they want your phone number which is even worst.

    • As you would expect on an sms website.
They ask your number in order to let you send free messages from your own number - much like smspup, yakedi…

  • +1

Have a read of http://www.smsfun.com.au/privacy.php and work out if giving out your personal information is worth a cheap USB key. Seriously, have a look at eBay (eg http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?rt=nc&LH_BIN=1&_nkw=2gb+usb+f…) or DX (eg http://www.dealextreme.com/p/designer-usb-2-0-jump-flash-dri…).

Sorry, OP. I don't consider this a bargain.

    • All good, I kinda feel smsfun are getting a raw deal here though.

  • -1

I too joined to get the USB - but at no stage to they ask for a mailing address - perhaps they send you the USB via SMS. Agree appears a scam.

  • This one is better and the gold usb looks awesome, only 1gb though http://www.freegoldusb.com/

i got mine about 1 week after submitting dont know how many left as there is a limit of 250.

Edit: they send you a lot of spam, so use a spam email address.they dont call your number though…..

I must be getting old. I can't be bothered signing up for a 2GB memory stick !!

Does this make me unAustralian, or worse, unOzbargainian?

    • +4

Smarter, judging by the comments ;)

    • the worst - unOzbargainian….
      your still australian hehe :)

Avoiding this one like herpies, My privacy is more than a $4 USB drive

  • -1

I"m too scared of this, no deal for me thanks!!

    • +3

Well, naturally. Now that everyone's talking about herpes I'm getting a little nervous myself ;)

      • sucks to be you. once u got it, nothing stops you MwAAHHahahHAhahh

        • +2

you know you said that out loud, right?

        • it's the gift that keeps on giving

        • @MattyD - looks like your "monkey" has Herpes SFW

  • -1

pft… sms activation code, no thanks they aint getting my number

  • +6

Another example of sly abuse of OzBargain. It's happening more frequently, look at the 'unintentional' $0 sales 'opportunities' in recent days. This sort of crap will eventually ruin this site….

  • +2

Its not free, you get a USB stick in exchange for allowing them to spam you with SMS and then on-sell your number to other spammers. Definitely not a bargain

  • +2

    No Deal
