  • You beat me to posting this. Seems like a wicked deal.

  • You will need to sign up to SMSFun. Any hidden fees?

It's free. I have been a member for about 18 months, no costs or anything bad so far.

      • Thanks. Good to hear that:-)

The smsfun website looks sleazy and it sounds too good to be true - with 1000 'joobz' you can get an altec lansing dock speaker set for ipods free. Then again nothing to lose in switching my second dormant sim from Vodafone. Is getting a $10 sim from optus the cheapest way to do this? What about the $2 sims can you still find them?

    • I ported a number from a vodaphone $2 Sim to TPG without ever activating it. Can't see why that would have changed.

As for an Optus Sim, maybe a prepaid phone will be best value.

  • Is there a minimum recharge spend to activate the Optus port?

    • you'll have to get a new optus sim, $10 seems to be the minimum you have to spend to get it.

  • I have an unactivated Crazy John's starter SIM which uses Voda, would I be able to get this? And then after that can I apply the recharge to my active but no credit Optus SIM?

If I can I feel a bit like the guy who traded up from a paperclip. :)

Incidentally if you sign up it looks like your friends may hate you after they get SMS spam purporting to be from your number.

    • Exactly my plan.
      Will this work??

      • I might have a go anyway, nothing better to do with this CJ SIM I got for free. It already has a mobile number assigned to it, so the plan is:

        Sign up for SMSFun
        Wait 48 hours
        Wait for switch to Optus
        Get credit
Apply credit to other Optus account
Throw away CJ SIM (actually keep it for a year, might be useful for visitor)

I'm sure there'll be a glitch somewhere, but might be fun.

        • According to the free usb stick thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53330
It's not worth getting an SMS fun account… I guess I'll skip it then.
But let us know if it works! :)

The problem appears to be in step 3. To switch to Optus, an Optus SIM with credit has to be purchased and as mentioned above $10 is the minimum. I suppose you would get 1000 Joobz for that outlay, but nothing in the store looks interesting. Was interesting trying to work out how to OzBargain the deal. :)

  • If you were inclined to do so there's really nothing stopping you from going and buying a $2 starter kit, or alternately, there's the numerous $10 starter kits that you got with telstra phones and didn't know before you started visiting ozbargain that you could return for a refund.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be accepting this deal on a phone number you actually want to keep.

EDIT: On the offchance they actually come good with the recharge vouchers, I guess there's really nothing stopping you from binning the affected sim card at that stage anyway.

  • Would this work with going to Boost or any other of the Optus sub brands ?

    • I would love to know this… I see an opputunity to sign up for a $2 sim and get ~$100 of points credit… Note that theres nothing stopping you from redeeming the points for itunes or wish cards…

    • my sister tried a TPG sim and it didnt work. They probably link to optus billing system to make sure its legit

  • Note from the T &C You must be a SMSFun member for 48 hours before switching.

  • Does the mobile number you registered with SMS Fun need to be the same as the number you are going to switch?

  • Do we have to put our real names in?

  • This promotion has been running for almost 2 months, can someone share whether it's worked for them? Seems like a lot of hassle transferring network for a reward that is still questionable on ozbargain… You'd think if it works it would be mentioned on whirlpool by now.

I recently changed from Vodafone to Optus - they both suck equally… Except Optus doesn't allow tethering.

    • iPhone tethering? I think you will find that this is no longer the case, Optus used to charge for tethering, but now its free, but you may have to call Optus support to activate the feature.

      • This tethering is one of the most ridiculous charge from Optus. Tethering is a feature of the phone and has absolutely nothing to do with Optus.

    In the T&C it states:

Each member who successfully ports their mobile number to Optus will be eligible to win under the promotion. The 50th member to switch for the week will win Prize #1. The 150th member to switch for the week will win Prize #2 and the 500th member that week will win Prize #3. The prizes may change from week to week. A week starts on Sunday 12:01am and ends Saturday 11:59pm.

This seems to suggest that not everyone gets the credit? Very misleading and confusing!

    • I wondered about that too when I came across it. The T&C also says: "SMSFun reserves the right to change or modify these terms without notice." Dodgy?

    • +1

I'm pretty sure it refers to these prizes show here : http://www.smsfun.com.au/switch-to-optus.php

  • Might give it a try, since I've got a spare Voda sim.

But that sim is not under my name… is that going to be a problem?

  • is the $100 sign up offer still available? when i click on the link all i get is "ERROR: You have already viewed this offer

Register for free or Login to SMSFun"

  • just buy and telstra and voda $2 sim and then activate them, then after transfer to optus and get the $100 credit, its quite easy, u can multiple $100 sims, great deal mate

    • Have you successfully got the $100? Do you have to put real name or not?

  • Offer page has disappeared. Does anybody have a cached copy?

many people talking about SMSFun/Optus in controlling the porting process, which result in the date our mobile number/s actually ports over to Optus will be after September 30, so we will get nothing!

im one of them porting now, but the porting process tooks days… still not ports over to Optus yet…

  • The way I read it is the promo runs until October 15th, and if you do it before sep30 there is $100 credit and after that time it might be something else? The page appears to work again now - I've switched and got confirmation that it worked from SMSFun. Waiting on credit now.

  • Thanks OP. I just received credit of 1000 joobs from smsfun :)

"You may continue sending SMS right now and for every 14 messsages you send we will bill your mobile phone $2." This is other people posted on the whirlpool,

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53330
    mocha_latte on 20/09/2011 - 19:08 also posted
"…they can charge to your phone service provider since they have you mobile number. You will see charges on your phone bill, not credit card bill.

I have been scammed once before."

Beware: "…will bill your mobile phone $…"!!!
    = ripped off!!!

  • I got the 1000 joobz and I've redeemed and received two gift cards so nothing but pluses here.

    • How long did you have to wait for the gift card to be delivered?

      • 2-3 days I think.

        • was it by express post with tracking?

        • It was express, I don't remember ahout tracking.

        • If you look at your order history there is a tracking number. I still haven't receive mine and the tracking info is not showing anything.

    • same here…got the credit and redeemed the gift cards….received within 2-3 days via express post yesterday…great post

drdoot, r u doot (SMSFun Chaperone) in the following post?
    http://www.smsfun.com.au/forum_view.php?t=3131&p=0
Similar name and same Location: Brisbane, plus u always gave “+” to smsfun…

r u affiliated with this store/service provider? If so, why you didn’t state that “u r a Store Representative”? Have u breach ozbargain’s “Store Representative Code of Conduct”…

    Can we still trust u?

  • Has anyone tried to unsubscribe from their spam list?
    It ignores all requests.

    Totally sleazy outfit.

Ozbiz bring up a very interesting subject: "drdoot and doot"

Looking into doot’s profile page (with photo) http://www.smsfun.com.au/profile.php?p=17
“This member is an SMSFun Administrator”, “Occupation: Employed / entrepreneur”

Follow his twitter page (with his photo too) http://twitter.com/#!/drdoot , he is “CEO of SMSFun”

From the two photos, we can see drdoot = doot = Administrator or CEO of SMSFun…

Look at Posts Submitted by drdoot http://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/30945/nodes
All tried to promoted SMSfun’s business, and he pretended to be someone else, not declared that he is affiliated with the company and in-fact, he is Administrator / CEO of SMSFun…

This is a serious Sockpuppeting! Sockpuppeting should be strictly forbidden (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:faq_merchants)! Sockpuppeting is not to be tolerated (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8912)!

drdoot = doot = Administrator/CEO of SMSFun not just breach of ozbargain’s “Store Representative Code of Conduct”, he may also breach of duty and responsibility of Australian company directors/CEOs…

And hereby most importantly, drdoot = doot = Administrator/CEO of SMSFun breach of trust of ozbargainers!!!
