  • Will this work with MacBook Pro 2019 model? Especially dual monitor setup and charging the MacBook Pro through the dock so I have use only one thunderbolt connection

    • +2

I have this dock and a 2019 Macbook pro 15. If you plug in 2 monitors in the back of the dock and then plug into the macbook it will mirror same screen on both monitors, Apple dropped multi stream transport from macbook 2016 so it can't differentiate the two screens.
The work around is to plug 1 screen in back of dock and 1 screen in the usb c on the front of the dock. This sometimes bugs out where you have to unplug and plug to activate the 2nd screen cause the mac will not wake it up.
Also if your macbook is low battery or doing high intensity work it will not charge, instead it will drain requiring you to plug the charger in directly into Mac.

      • Thank you for the detailed information. This then won't serve the purpose for me.

      • just a theory.. could it because this dock isn't actually thunderbolt, its USB3 over a USB-C socket??

        • The dock I have is thunder bolt 3. When I plug in to my XPS 13, I can run Ethernet, 2x screens, keyboard, mouse, usb drives and charge all on 1 usb c cable.
I've seen colleagues even run 3x 1080p screens over the tb3.

          • @Julzx: I noticed that this model is even worse then mine cause it doesn't support TB3 between the dock and laptop. Would not recommend it, the TB3 version is good for Windows and workarounds can be used on Mac but I would not pay $200 for a non TB3 dock. Might as well get those Chinese brands off ebay.

  • I'm using a different model of Lenovo dock for my (non-Lenovo) laptop, and it works fine.

For Lenovo docks, I would recommend to install the latest firmware version of the dock (in my case that resolved some display issues after laptop wakes up from sleep mode).

The latest firmware update for posted dock model is here:
    https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS504448

  • This is a DisplayLink USB video card. I would not buy one to use multiple external monitors with.
    Get a Chinese ThunderBolt dock.

      edited: fixed typo

I have another similar unit, 3x actually. Dell D6000
all work fine with 1x external 1440p monitor, USB peripherals & USB-C charging our laptops (HP & lenovo)

    Hi all.
As this is a USB based video card, it is super laggy (even for office work), esp when driving large monitors.

  • I have this model and I think I might not be using it too effectively. Could anyone help? Here is my setup:

I use it with my Lenovo Thinkpad laptop via USB C to drive 1 of the external monitors, the 2nd monitor is connected directly into laptop's HDMI port. How is it supposed to charge the laptop? I currently have a 2nd charger connected into the 2nd USB C port of the laptop to charge it because it doesn't seem to charge when connected from dock to its USB C.

    • why are you not connecting both monitors to the dock? There are 2 hdmi ports on it.
if it is not charging, it is to do with your laptop. I had a faulty lenovo and had to poke the reset hole to get it charging again.
With a new lenovo and using the same dock, it is not happening.

So i am guessing this is to do with the laptop, not the dock.

      • Yes I was previously connecting the second monitor to the dock as well but then I read somewhere that using a dock with displaylink uses laptop resources to drive monitors so I thought I should probably use the HDMI port that laptop already has and connect one of the monitors to that.

With the charging issue, I have tried with 2 different Thinkpads (with my work laptop and my personal E485), but no luck. Not sure if this might be the USB C cable issue? I will try with another USB C cable and see.

I used an A475 before with the dock and its true that it uses way too much resources from the computer.
After changing to A485 with the same dock, problem disappears.

Works brilliantly now, even connects to my spare Dell Latitude(this old laptop doesn't have USB C, i have to use the C to A adapter).
i have 2 HDMI monitors, USB headphones, LAN, USB wireless mouse and wired keyboard connected to it all the time.
And it is charging at the same time.

          • @spiinl: I was just reading some forums and figured out that the charging issue might be due to use of a lower powered adapter. I misplaced my original adapter that came with the dock and have been using a 65W laptop charger to power it.

I have just ordered a 135W adapter, hopefully that can resolve the issue. Thanks for your help.

Can anyone comment on the benefits of a dock over a USB C hub such as this Anker one?

    • +1

This lenovo one will charge the laptop as well if your laptop supports charging over USB-C. The Anker one will not.

If your laptop has an dedicated GPU, be aware you'll need to use a thunderbolt dock (which this is not) for the GPU to be passed through and used for the display. Otherwise you're just using the basic video capabilities built into the dock.

  • +2

Be aware, this is not the Thunderbolt version of the Lenovo dock, this is USB-C only so monitor output is via DisplayLink. It can only drive one 4K display at 60hz. This will be problematic if you are driving multiple 4K displays. If you want the Thunderbolt version which can do multiple 4K displays at 60hz, then the product number is 40AN0135AU.

  • Tried this with our Asus Vivobook - Displays great dual-extended screen! But it didnt charge the Asus laptop and the power button on the dock didnt work with the Asus. So will definitely go well with a compatible Lenovo device. It was great tho to simply plug in the laptop thru type C and have access to dual HD screen and other accessories.
