  • Good deal for usb3.0 version

  • Yep picked up two USB2.0 ones a while back for the same price so this with 3.0 is a good deal

  • Great deal OP, been looking for a cheap 1 - 1.5TB USB3.0 portable hard drive.

  • does this contain a standard 2.5" hard disk inside that could fit into a laptop?

    • -3

No. The "standard" size for laptops is 14.5 mm thick, these are 22mm thick, unless your laptop has a bigger drive bay…

      • +1

a lot of laptops will only accept 9mm high drives now,

      • +1

normal laptop hdd now a days should be only 9mm, 2.5 inch

        • +1

I guess I partly wrong, got the info from seagate website… But still doesn't change the fact it wont fit.

      • +1

Standard size for laptops has always been 9mm thick. There has also almost always been a non-standard 12.5mm drive size, which only some laptops can take (they can take either). The 12.5mm drives have been used for when the technology hasn't caught up to the capacity requirements, so they just chuck on a third platter which makes it 12.5mm thick.

This drive is 12.5mm, so it won't fit in a standard laptop, but could fit in one designed to accept a 12.5mm drive.

    • +5

      Guys & girls,

Not much of the above is right.

9.5mm is the only "standard" height.
12.5mm can be used in a number of laptops. This is a common height but I believe it is not officially/technically a standard.
14.0mm is not standard. There are only a few drives that are larger than 12.5mm.

As far as currently available drives go,
9.5mm: The highest capacity here is is 1tb* (CHECK the model number! Most of them are 12.5mm)
12.5mm: Not really worth talking about right now. Because 9.5mm can get you 1tb but 12.5mm does not get you 1.5tb drive (but it should soon, if the manufacturers stop being so lazy and make a 3 platter 1.5tb drive. They can do a 1tb 2 platter drive, so the technology already exists).
Greater than 12.5mm: All 1.5tb drives are currently thicker than 12.5mm. I think these 1.5tb seagate drives here are 14.5mm drives in a 22.0mm plastic case.

      *9.5mm & 1tb are:
      Samsung M8
      WD Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT
      Toshiba MQ01ABD
      Seagate ?

You'll need to buy 1tb 9.5mm drives as barebone drives, as far as I'm aware they aren't being bundled into enclosures yet. Lazy manufacturers. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, because I'd love to be (barebones drives are more expensive than drives in enclosures for some reason)!

Lastly, from what I've read on ozbargain, you need to be careful that the hard drive actually has a sata connector on it. Sometimes it has USB soldered right onto the drive, therefore it can't be transplanted into a laptop. I would avoid any USB2 enclosure as it'll probably be soldered-on-usb. USB3 drives I think are ok right now, but they may start soldering them on in the future. I bought a USB3 1tb 12.5mm drive in a buffalo brand enclosure and it was sata.

      • Well this kind of explains my question of "Why are seagate the only company supplying 1.5tb 2.5" drives?" So the density still hasn't reduced to the "standard" 9.5mm and we are looking a long way into the future for 2TB. So how does this hold up against Moore's law that hase been working on HDDs for a while now?

      • Guys & girls,
Not much of the above is right.
9.5mm is the only "standard" height.

The standard height is actually 9.0mm, not 9.5. Although maybe it was always 9.5mm and they have now started using up all that space. They certainly used to all be 9.0mm.

        • I could be wrong. I wrote 9.0 to start with, then googled to check. Google came up with 9.5 but its the kind of thing thats likely to be wrong all over the internet.

Guess I could measure one of my own drives but tbh that's not going to happen :)

  • +1

I was expecting this to be a 3.5" drive that needs external power supply for this price, how wrong I was! Good deal.

  • When does this start? Website still says $177

    • Sorry my bad starts tomorrow 22/09

  • *Pre Loaded Backup Software & Encryption

Can we re-format to get rid of this?

    Cheers!

    • Yes.

      • Are you sure? I though some of the seagate drives (or was it WD ones?) you could not get rid of the bloatware crap/

        • WD. From what I read that WD model is defunct or fixed. No longer an issue.

        • Yes I'm 100% sure. Its the first thing I did when I plugged mine in. Well, actually I took a copy of all the junk on there just in case, then formatted the drive.

I thin it was a certain model of the WD ones that had a bunch of crap in ROM memory that couldn't be removed.

        • Stumo is exactly right.

      • does it void the warranty if the original program was removed?

  • Is the catalogue for JB starting tomorrow online yet?

I can't seem to find it.

  • +1

    is this 5400 rpm?

  • I too found this is their catalogue, and went in today to get it. A rep said it starts tomorrow.
Bought a 42" Soniq tv instead for 499. full HD.

    • +1

I HOPE U MEAN $399 AS THAT IS THE PRICE IN THE CATALOGUE.

      • +1

My apologies. I meant $399. Was too excited about my new tv.
Will be back tomorrow to get the external HDD.

  • Wonder if these ones will have the same issue as the previous 1TB 2.5" ones, where alot of em were DOA…..

  • Not another one, I have so many HDD recently, 2 3TB and 2 2TB from recent deals.

  • +1

    Not a bad price.

But for those who don't need another portable HDD yet, it's always good to wait as there's a deal every month or two. I'll be waiting till the 1.5Tb drops below $100. Any bets it'll be by xmas?

    • +1

im saying this to myself like a month ago when i missed the buffalo deals. then there you go, $125 for 1.5TB.
before xmas i will think it will go below $100. buy only when you really really need it

  • -4

MSY is selling this for $115
    http://msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

    • +2

      thats the 1tb version

      • oops my bad. well I no longer regret +1 the deal then :p

  • For those wanting to use eSATA, you can get a standard sata to eSATA cable off ebay for around $10…shave part of the SATA connector casing off with a dremel and it works for 1/3 of the price of their add on cable.

    • +1

Or you can get the GoFlex power esata cable for $13 from HT

  • or that….depends how tight u are :P…
last time i checked they were 25 there..oh well
    good job

  • For the more non technical, you can use USB 3 cables in USB 2 ports. They are all physically the same. You will just not get the speed benefit.

  • I hope this isn't a misprint like the last good 2.5" drive deal from JB. Advertised as $72 for a 1TB 2.5" Seagate, then was retracted, they say that it was suppose to be 3.5".
Some people got price match elsewhere, like me.

    This is a bargain.

    • Funny thing is if you click on buy online, it shows $177 and USB 2.0.

  • Got one. 2 more on the shelf at Gepps Cross. Thanks OP.

  • Great deal. Just bought 2 at Officeworks Marion (SA), pricematch with 5% discount came to $118.75 each :)

    Receipt for those interested:

  • Just had Office Works price match.

  • officeworks has dropped the price to $125

    • Geez they work quickly don't they? :) Drop the price so they don't have to price match, wait till the special is over and then jack the price back up….of well at least they are being competitive unlike other retailers who refuse to lower or even price match

  • Can anyone confirm if this come with a USB3.0 cable?
I"m getting confused by pages that say its USB3.0, and pages that say it can be upgraded to USB3.0/Firewire/eSATA.

    • It comes with USB3.0, you can also change the connection to ESATA or FW by changing the connection module.

      • Thanks! Officeworks here I come…

      • I have an eSATA port but not USB3.
Do you reckon this cable would work? Wonder if it will fit through the gap of the case?
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dual-Power-eSATA-SATA-22pin-eSATA…

Everyone seems to be selling the Goflex eSATA cable for >$25.

        • +1

That cable works, however you need to shave part of the casing off the sata side to make it fit. Seagate done the dodgy..their plug is essentially the same but with a longer pluggy bit.
I used a dremel to make mine fit :P

        • Thanks ihuangyu and frinik. I'm currently transferring via USB2 and it is painfully slow for 1TB worth of data. I guess this initial transfer is going to be long.

I'll get someone in Sydney to drop by a HT store to pick up the cable and collect it when I travel to Sydney in the near future.

frinik, thanks for the confirmation. at least there's a workaround should I need one sooner.

        • IMPORTANT

Don't shave the casing off to make the cable fit, shave the cable itself. That way you don't modify the case and don't lose your warranty.

Using a dremel with a grinding attachment, you only need to angle the dremel and remove a small amount of plastic. Did it myself last night.

You'd do the same thing on the ebay cable in your link.

And thanks for your post. I thought the drive-end of the cables was a proprietary seagate connection. It isn't. It would have cost $40 to buy the goflex adaptor, esatap->sata+power, then extension cable that I needed to connect this drive to my ps3. Now it's costing me $5 and 10 minutes of my time.

        • Oh yeah thanks justtoreply.
I probably wasnt clear…shave the casing off the cable. Not the actual drive ;)

        • And now I have to add that trying to connect this to the sata port of a ps3 is a failure. The sytem software cannot format a drive larger than 1tb (drivers bigger than this can only be connected by usb, not sata, and usb connected drives must be formatted in fat32).

Anyone wanna by my nearly new drive? :( Use the contact form under my ozbargain user details, as I've got emails turned on. Yes of course I'll sell at a discount.

        • Sold. Thanks for helping me out. Silly PS3.

  • +1

All Melbourne city OW & JB stores sold out since morning. Ordered online. :)

  • Online seems sold out as well, can't find it on the site.

      • Great thanks for the help

      • any idea how long back order takes?

  • I just bought one @177 ten days ago at Officeworks. Today I went there and they refund me $52.
I am pretty happy with that.

  • Anyone received their item already by buying online from JB HI Fi?

  • I bought this hdd and the usb cable is very fiddly. you have to get it in at the right angle and not fully in or it disconnects. So once you get it in, if u brush past the cable in any way it disconnects instantly. It also doesn't work at all with a soniq tv which recognises all my other drives which are up to 1TB. Is this just because 1.5TB is too big for it?

    Anyone else have these issues?
