Love my kobo. Like more than friends…

I've got 2 Kindles in my household but getting our first Kobo with this deal. Overdrive is the main factor.

      • +3

Overdrive sounds sexual. I like it.

        • +2

Sounds like someone has been self quarantined too long :D

Overdrive is an app that allows you to "borrow" books from your local library using your library membership.

          • +4

@trex: Haha ah that’s cool. I’ve been using caliber for a more permanent borrowing experience. Wonder if overdrive works kindle. Hmm

            • +1

@Bellpop: I have Calibre on my PC but reading on an eReader gives you so much more freedom.

Overdrive is not available with Kindle.

              • +4

@trex: Calibre allows you to put books on your ereader

                • @ONEMariachi: With my Kindle connected using USB, I could simply copy and paste compatible files directly into the Kindle like portable drive. I only use Calibre to convert one book format to another. Do you know if with Kobo, one can load books in without using Calibre?

                  • @trex: I've not used a Kobo myself, but it has the option of choosing a Kobo as your device, in the set up. So I'd confident in saying it is fine.

With the kindle, you can also set it up to send to the device using the kindle email. So there's no need to even connect by usb. Works a dream, and even allows me to send books to my parents Kindle- where they live in a different state. Super convenient.

                    • @ONEMariachi: I believe the setup in Calibre you are referring to is so that the exported file format from Calibre is ideally formatted for Kobo Clara screen size.

Wifi is usually turned off on my Kindles to conserve battery. Also one is used by my son anyway so never used it with kindle email that you mention. Been using Kindle for over 10 years now but Overdrive offered by Kobo is so appealing.

                  • +3

@trex: yes with kobo it is just like thumbdrive USB, you can drag copy paste everything. will read epub straight away

                  • +1

                    @trex: No need to convert

                • @ONEMariachi: Very disappointed with Overdrive. Can't find a Sydney metro library on it. Adobe Digital Editions is horrendous as well, keeps telling me that my device isn't authorised.

                  • +1

@bozbargain: I've never bothered with overdrive myself. I usually just find whatever the cheapest distributors are, and let Calibre do the rest.

                    • @ONEMariachi: That means you're purchasing your eBooks, right? I liked the idea of borrowing them from the library (mainly for the kids) but it's all so finicky!

                      • +1

@bozbargain: I purchase probably a good 50-60% of my books and visit the high seas for others- or obtain from friends. I consume a good 40-50 books a year, and tend to buy the ones that I enjoy- usually physically.

                  • +1

@bozbargain: In Victoria, residents can sign up for free membership with any public library within the state. It should be similar in NSW, so you are not restricted to your local library.

OverDrive website has a nifty search function to help you find which library has a copy of the book you want. Just find the book and use the "Find in my local library" search and put in "New South Wales".

                    https://www.overdrive.com/search

                    • @thangcuoi: Thanks. You’d still have to sign up for all those individual libraries then, right? How many did you sign up with, out of interest?

                  • +1

@bozbargain: Search for libraries in Sydney supporting Overdrive with this link. Any of them listed in Sydney located near to you?

                    • @trex: Thanks Trex, I found this list through Overdrive on the Kobo as well. City of Sydney is not included (anymore) so may have to sign up at another one once libraries open again.

                  • +1

@bozbargain: I have joined many a library overseas with the use of VPNs, public sms gateways and google maps (some overdrive enabled libraries allow you to have instant access to their digital collection if you can fudge the system to making it think you are a local resident. The other option is ask friends that live in other areas for their library details. Of course when you are able to download the book unless you have a Kobo or other epub reader makes it hard but Apprentice Alf will sort you out for your kindle.

                    • +1

@redsmeg: That sounds great. Any tips please (via PM) on good libraries with a decent selection of ebooks you can sign up for online overseas (with VPN)?

  • if you like physical button, go for kobo libra, jb hifi commercial selling for $230

    • +1

Libra is also nearly 30g heavier. I read mostly lying on my side in bed so I dunno if the buttons would be a convenience.

      • For me the weight is not a concern, i am actually using the bigger Kobo Forma, once you used the button, it's hard to go back to touch, i was actually hoping there is remote button page turner, that will be the ideal solution

        • +1

Ok, maybe because I do alot of my reading lying in bed. I will definitely feel the extra 30g when I am lying flat on my back.

        • Did you got light strip on the button side?

          • @wjojff: i think if you look carefully enough , you can see it, but i kinda get used to it, didn't really bother me when i am reading

    • Agreed. I'm waiting for the Libra to go on sale (if it ever does) to replace my Sony ereader. A button is a must. I read lying down also on my side so a button makes it one handed.

  • +3

This could be discounted because the Clara HD model will be replaced soon in the Kobo line-up.
    https://goodereader.com/blog/kobo-ereader-news/the-kobo-nia-…
    Still a good price though.

    • Is it better to wait till prices go further down?

      • This model has been as cheap as $120 I think, I bought it for $138, waiting for it to drop further so I can claim price protection with my credit card.

  • +2

FYI, a new model is expected to be release soon to replace the Clara HD.

    https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329095

    • Note however that the Clara HD can be hacked with an upgraded SD card - I did it and it was ridiculously straightforward. Snap it open, take out the card, dump all the bytes, dump them onto a new card, resize the FAT32 partition, put the card in, snap it closed. The newer models, including its successor, can't from the looks of it. Or at least not anywhere near as easily.

      • +1

Wow, thanks for the tip. I found more info on the hack here

      • Is 8GB not enough?

    Also available at Myer: https://www.myer.com.au/p/clara-hd-e-reader-628666390
Same $149 after adding to cart.

    • That's interesting. Myer's website shows $179.95 with no sign of any discount. I tried after adding it to cart like you did and it is indeed showing a discount with final price of $149.

  • i still have and using kobo touch, released in 2011/2012……

    • Using the original Kobo H2o from 2016.

  • Both JB and Meyer eBay are showing out of stock

    • +1

Myer.com.au website still has stock. Per above @ttkc, price from the website shows $179.95 but once you add it to cart, it drops to $149 with free delivery.

  • I checked shopback and the terms of the cashback for Myer does not include electronics

  • Anyone got the Forma and have light strip on the button side?

  • FYI these have internal microSD cards.
If you want to upgrade the internal storage to 128GB you can carefully open up the case, remove the 8GB card, copy it to the larger card and reinsert the new card.
This is not at all officially supported but works.

    • +1

Most Epubs are less than a MB.So you can store thousands of ebooks on the 8 GB.This is not a tablet to store music and videos. Why would you need more?

      • +1

Some people read manga on these too, and that takes up much more space than ebooks do.

For those uni students who want waterproofing and a bigger screen (and have a bigger wallet), yesterday I ordered the Kobo Libra H20 (with sleep case) from Booktopia for $245 + shipping using a Unidays 10% off code.

I honestly believe the extra $100 pays for the waterproofing, bigger screen and case, especially because I expect it to last a few years. Maybe that's just iso me speaking because not going out means I have more money to spend :).

    • I agree. Its best to spend a bit more to get the best ereader possible because you will use it for 3 to 5 years at least. The difference would be hardly $50 more per year for a much better reading experience.

And since it only displays a page of text, its not like its going to be outdated after 3 to 5 years.

      • That's something I noticed when i bought a cheap 2-in-1 insipiron, I soon got fed up with the display and general flimsiness, and got a latitude instead.

Just because something is a cheap, doesn't mean the compromise is worth it. It's often better to spend a bit more for an improved experience, rather than wasting money on something bad, throwing it out, and purchasing something better.

  • Anyone buying on the Rakuten site having difficulties proceeding with payment online? It's rejected me yesterday and today…

  • I wish there was a colour e-Ink reader, then I would be all over such deals.
( I want colour, because of comics and technical documentation, where colour is necessary )

    • How about Kindle Fire?

      • that's not e-Ink now, is it ?

I don't know how the Kindle Fire works.

  • Anyone knows if RBDigital works on this ? Quite a few library has good magazine and book selection through it.
