Is there a 2070S deal as well?

  • -7

    This is funny - nearly $700 for a mid-range GPU. I remember when you could get a mid-range GPU for under $200 (I think I paid about $170 for a Geforce 4 Ti4200 in 2002 and about $220 for a GTX660 in 2012).

    • +3

In terms of PPP, $220 in 2012 is around the same as $400 today due to the weaker AUD. The much bigger product stack from Nvidia means the 2060S is no longer a mid-range GPU. That's the 1660S.

      • -5

Not really. The only 16-series which could be considered mid-range is the 1660 Ti, even then, that's debatable.

Using my analogy of the Geforce 4, the current 20 series is equivalent to the "Ti" models, while the 16 series is equivalent to the MX models. The 1660S could be compared to the MX460, while the 2060 is comparable to the old Ti4200. (2070 = Ti4400, 2080 = Ti4600).

Funnily enough, even the most expensive 4 card, the Ti4800, was nowhere near $700.

          I got a gtx570 in 2011 for about $500.
$500 in 2011 is now about $573 in 2020. This is called inflation.
Aussie dollar in 2011 was about parity (1.03USD), Aussie dollar is now about 64c. This is called an exchange rate.
If our dollar was 1.03USD, 2070S would be about $556, but because its 64c, that $573 is actually $922.

And the price of a 2070S now is about $900-$1000.

        • Using my analogy of the Geforce 4

GPUs that came out two decades ago aren't really a relevant comparison to the market today.

Let's just talk about US MSRP (you can do the conversions to AUD).

The GTX 960 MSRP was $199 USD. The GTX 1060 is $250 (mostly due to the mining craze), and the GTX 1660 Super is $229 USD. So by and large, they're launching at around the same price.

Let's look at the performance gap between generations: https://www.techspot.com/review/1819-geforce-gtx-1660-vs-rtx…

Take an example game, e.g. Apex Legends at 1080p High - 960 is 39 fps, 1060 is 61 fps, 1660S is 95 fps. All other games show similar trends.

Basically, the long and short of it is that the 1660S is the spiritual successor of the X60 series, and its performance gains from the 1060 are in the same ballpark as 760 to 960, and 960 to 1060.

Yeah and the average petrol price in 2002 was 87 cents. It's 142 cents today.

      • -3

        That's a joke, right?

      • -1

        1.42? it's like 90 cents where I live

        • -1

Why did you and AussieZed get downvoted for this? I've been paying 85c/L in Perth for the last 2-3 weeks. Some people are salty.

          • +4

@Frayin: If not for Corona it would still be 142 and rising. Once demand goes up again, so will petrol (assuming OPEC goes back to production limits).

    • +1

I paid $420 for an RTX 2060 iGame 1 1/2 year ago. At least try to compare apples with apples, not apples with giraffes.

  • +3

At one point, these were around $100 cheaper, and 2070 supers were regularly around $750. I guess this is the new reality we’ve gotta get used to.

    • +1

Yeh, there is a potential that these prices will drop EOY, but it's time or money. If you already have a working PC that does what you need, you can probably wait for a better deal…probably :P

    • +2

Was $647 for Aorus 2070 super linked below. Don't get jackednow, just buy a little later.

      • And new card details are starting to be leaked, might see the 30xx series in 6 mo.

    • Yeah the Gigabyte Gaming OC 2070 super was available around black friday sales for 700 + 1tb gigabyte SSD as part of a promotion.

The current prices are ridiculous for a 2060 super. Rather get an AMD 5700XT…

Does anyone remember January at all? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/512774

    • +5

I remember that the company is out of business now.

      • +2

liquidation I am glad I never pulled the trigger on any of those deals as tempting as they were ill be waiting for the 3x or new AMD cars honestly

      • They did deliver for the most part though.

        • me and three other friends definitely never received ours. Went through a 6 week refund process. Absolute horrendous company.

      • +3

I think that reflects being a low-margin, high-volume entrant as the global economy pauses.

This is an awful deal regardless, literally over MSRP for an entry level 2060 Super mere weeks before we hear about the next architecture.

  • +6

better off buying a 5700 xt at this price

  • +1

2060 and its super is not a good card.. 700 for a card that will be out of date soon

    • +2

Mostly depends on price, i got a 2060 for $460 late last year and its been great but yea now looking at the prices your better off with a 2070 super if you can do the extra few hundred.

I personally would never buy another AMD card again, drivers just suck too much to save a few $$

  • +2

Surprised these things are still so expensive.

Feels like we've been buying 2xxx cards for way too many years now. On the other hand I can't make heads or tails of AMD's naming conventions.

  • Damn Maybe i should of Bought a 2070 Super when they were this price, Guess in this case i'll just wait for the new Card lineups lol…

    • Not long now, the next few months will be interesting for details on how much improvement the next gen is.

  • If anyone was to buy a card now I would say 5700xt or nothing .

  • Ouch wonder when the 3xxx series out in few months will lower these. Shoulda bought the 2070S few months back. Now gotta live with gtx 960 2gb. -_-

    • The 3000 series are just a few months away apparently. Leaks suggests they will be 30% faster, but not sure about pricing.

      • Of course, the price will go up and up every year, and people will continue to buy them, soon Midrange prices will be over 1k.

  • I'm waiting for the new GPUs.
