Neat Office, previously seen here, here, & here, is currently available for free on the Windows Store, save $149.95, if anyone's looking for a Microsoft Office substitute. I've recently started using it after my student access to Microsoft Office ran out, & it's pretty good from what I can tell, or at least it has been for my purposes, anyway. I used SoftMaker Office for a little while, but it was buggy & annoying on my touchscreen computer - Neat Office has been much better so far. Neat's got heaps of functionality I haven't explored yet, so I'll insert the obligatory 'your mileage may vary' caveat here, just in case. You can download it free until the end of May if you'd like to give it a go for free this time around.

Here's the description from the Windows Store:

Neat Office is the free office software in 2019 - an alternative to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint). It is a powerful office app that is fully compatible with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint), PDF, Google Docs, Sheets & Slides, and WPS document format.

With Neat Office suite, you can view & edit a wide variety of formats:

Looks like just a rebadged LibreOffice. Why would you support people trying to profit off the hard work of volunteers who create free Open Source Software?

The full price is also BS.

  • +18

As above, it's just rebadged free software - support the actual developers of LibreOffice.

  • +8

Damn I just paid $1.6b for it last week. It was down from $7.2trillion, so I thought it was a bargain, doh!

  • +10

Sick of these useless deals. No one pays 150$ for this.

  • +8

Rebadged LibreOffice. The original is FOSS, but who knows what the developer might have inserted into this version.

  • +6

Nobody should ever pay for something that is just a rebadged version of open sourced software.

  • +7

Not this overpriced rubbish again. Seems to always go free. Feel sorry for the people who actually paid full price for this.

  • -2

Is this approved by Bill Gates ?

  • +7

Do not get this, even if free.

I 'bought' a pdf writer from the Microsoft store and it was riddled with advertising and pop ups that I was disgusted to think it was a real product. Not to mention that the application was 100% working from a website that did pdf conversions for free.

My advice is to be weary of installing dodgy software like this as it may come with more than just terrible code and advertising.

    • Wary, not weary. Did you use Neat Office spellcheck?

    • I 'bought' a pdf writer from the Microsoft store and it was riddled with advertising

I usually get them for the advertising as it is often better than the free product…

  • If you're not going to buy Office, why would you buy Office? If you want to spend money on your office suite, then donate to libreoffice and install their more standards compliant, opensource, platform agnostic suite.

  • Open source turned into Scamware

  • +2

Dodgy clone of LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Don't trust this rubbish!

  • (Was $149.95)

You can usually find a real 6 user Office 365 licence for $80-$90.

  • Can someone explain what is the difference between MS Office and LibreOffice/Neat Office, apart from one you have to pay and the other being free? I read the description but can’t see the difference.

  • In general, open vs closed source, standards based vs proprietary, free vs paid. MS has some more features but also some drawbacks, LibreOffice is well advanced and slowly but surely catching up on the features that matter to most…
