I've converted to Libre Office last few years. It's a bit getting use to finding specific functions or format settings afters years of MS Office, but very similar and really great as free shareware.

    I don't think I've heard of Ultra Office… should I switch?

    • +10

I would stick with Libre Office. It's open-source and always free.
It's maintained by the community that use it!
I've heard that this uses code from Libre Office anyway.

      • Libre has PDF editing function?

        • +2

          Yes, Draw will do this.

    • +13

I pay about $100 a year for Office x5 and 1TB OneDrive x5, struggling to think why I should bother to spend years learning the quirks to Libre Office when I'd pay $100 a year for 1TB of cloud storage anyway.

      • +2

        Same position/thoughts as you

      • +2

If what you do depends on it, you should always know how to operate more than one piece of software if available. Microsoft could do anything to that suite over the next 5 years - you're just renting.

      • I'm still not paying for cloud storage. I'm sick of having to compromise what I save, or shuffle between various free providers. But I'm convinced there is a conspiracy to lock us into ever-growing subscriptions so we can never retire, I I'll resist if I can.

I didn't find there was any transition going from Word to Libre. They all copy each other, there's little difference. (I've worked in IT for 30 years so maybe I'm just used to adapting??)

        • Cloud storage gets cheaper all the time. It’s so convenient, from my iPhone I can add any file to my windows pc, and can browse and use files, I can open a word document or svg on my iPad and edit it, then open it on my desktop for further editing. And 1tb is plenty, don’t even need to think about using it up with daily 1gb Wordpress backups.

very similar and really great as free shareware

Libre Office isn't shareware, it's totally free open source software. It will never expire or nag you to register :)

    @ Microsoft

A bit misleading they are not from Microsoft from ompuClever Systems Inc.‬

    • @ Microsoft Store

    • Alvian fixed it.. thanks :)

  • How is this different from MS Office?

    • Both are 3rd party different products. Not by Microsoft just compatible with their file formats.

  • +14

It's worth clarifying that this is made by ‪CompuClever Systems Inc. and published on the Microsoft Store, rather than being made by Microsoft itself.

Also, UltraOffice uses code from LibreOffice, which is open source and always free.

  • +1

Thanks OP, will check it out!

  • +3

Neat Office with a slightly higher rating appears to be free @ Microsoft Store as well. Not sure how they compare so grabbed both. Thanks OP, was looking for an alternative to MS Office.

    • +1

      Nice find.. updated OP :)

    • +6

They're all based on the same code as Libre Office.

Usually these proprietary versions are abandoned after a few years.

  • +1

No harm in checking it out, thanks OP

  • +7

Really amazed by the PDF editing function, Adobe charges heaps for that functionality. Thanks OP

    • could you add javascript into the pdf?

  • +1

Great find!!! THANKS BA (Being Amazing!) and Indie. Was looking for MS office somewhere else (wink wink) to get it for free for new Lappy. Now I don't have to!

  • Doesn't work for Apple iOS, correct? Any alternatives?

  • +1

I'm not very keen on spending $98/year on Microsoft 365. I've been looking around for an alternative to MS office quite awhile now. Thank you for sharing this.

  • +4

Is this a genuine discount? Microsoft office open-source alternatives are usually free anyway. I am struggling to see why anyone would have paid $149 instead of the real thing for this and I doubt anybody did. (except maybe on the shopping channel)

  • Wont install for me (both), Signed in to my ms account on my pc, click install, nothing!

  • +3

Appreciate the effort offering a free alternative to MS Office. But I’d stick with Libre Office also. To be honest, the Microsoft Store is full of things like this with inflated prices and mega discounts to distort value.

    Check out this archive manager;

    $299.95 Free

Or you could just download 7zip, which is always free.

  • Says windows 10 or higher for optimum performance.

Anyone tried on windows 7 etc?

    Cheers!

    • +1

It is only compatible with Windows 10 as it is a universal app, which can only be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

  • switched to linux (mint), which has libre suite, from microsoft-world long ago and have not ever looked back. libre is great

  • +5

I would stay away from UltraOffice, the vendor CompuClever Systems is known for junkware that is hard to uninstall, see these:
    https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-pc-clean-maestro-by-com…
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_ot…
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/all/compuc…

    • This is a universal Windows app, which will mean that is will be easy to install, just like any universal app. All of their other software can be removed from Add/Remove programs.

      • +1

Are you sure about that? Have you checked the links I shared? Have you checked reviews on the store for both Ultra Office and Neat Office - all 5-star reviews look like generic bot reviews (that can be applied to any arbitrary app). Negative ones, on the other hand, complain that app required leaving a review before the first use.

        • +3

I spend a lot of time testing software and have used most of their software and yes they can be uninstalled with Add/Remove programs. However, I wouldn't recommend any of them, as none their software is worth using in my opinion.

Ultra Office is an exception to this as it seems decent, but the other free office software listed here Neat Office, seems better. But, the stated $299.95 usual price for Neat Office seems very dubious. Both of these office apps, ask you to leave a review when you launch them. But you can skip this and there is the option to not be asked again. So you can not leave a review and also never be pestered again.

    • Thanks for the warning. I'll stick with Office 365

  • Can I download this with a Mac laptop?

    • Only if you are running Windows 10 on it.

  • I have purchased a laptop and waiting for it to arrive. ETA Friday-Mon. Can I download now and once laptop arrived have it installed then?

    • +1

Yep, just go to the microsoft store on a win10 device and "purchase it".
As shown below, i have "purchased" an app that my laptop doesn't even support. It is now tied to my account as purchased, just waiting to install.

      • Thanks!!

  • Is it any better than Libre Office? If not why bother taking the risk with non open source from an unknown and possibly questionable company?

  • +3

I downloaded Ultra Office and could not tell the difference with LibreOffice. Even the taskbar/app icons are the same!

Why would you pay for Ultra Office when you can use LibreOffice? Remember, LibreOffice is a free open-source project which asks for donations.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/

Prove me wrong but it seems like Ultra Office is just a re-packaged version of LibreOffice.

  • i've used openoffice for years, any point switching?

  • +1

Anyone has a comparison "Libreoffice vs Ultra Office vs Neat Office"?

    • yeah would be good to know. But I have no problems with Libre so I guess no reason to look into alternatives.

I was told to save docs in Libre format, but the last thing I want is to not be able to read a doc on another computer, so I set defaults to always save in MS Office formats, and never had a problem. (except powerpoints can display differently in powerpoint so they need to be tested.)

      • Thanks for that. I think I will choose Libreoffice as many people suggest it.
And yes, there are always some problems with the slides that we can't avoid - need to be tested before using.

  • weird i cant install. it says:

Pick where you want to install
It looks like you don’t have any applicable device(s) linked to your Microsoft account. To install, sign in on a device with your Microsoft account.
