Wow nice. I used a credit for this audiobook last month and haven't had the chance to listen to it yet. Now it's free :/

    • +2

      So did I!

Will look into returning it for a credit.

      Cheers for the post OP.

And I had it on my wishlist ready to use my credits but got lazy and haven't used them yet.

shouldn't have any issues - even if you've listened to it - they take them back no questions asked.

        • Derp : checked out where I can return it, thanks for info.

Can't return one of the books I hated cause I got it last feb :P

      • Just returned it for a credit and within 10seconds received a credit back, no issues :)

    • Contact them perhaps?

    Hi Krayzii,
You can return the one you got and get the credit back. Then "buy" it again for free.

    • Just returned it thanks for the info :)

  • Ugh. I just used a credit for this

    Edit. Yay just returned it

  • I own it already, amazon gave me a 14.95 credit

This is one of my favourite books of all time.

    • +3

And a book that you can reread and learn more from each time. It should be on school curriculums.

      • Thankfully it was on mine, great read even when I was forced to.

  • Great book

  • Thanks OP! Seems like a great book, I have it hardcover from many years ago now but just never gotten around to reading. So much easier with Audible.

Here is how to return it if you've already bought it using a credit:

    1. Go to "Hi YourName!" drop down, and choose Account Details.
    2. Click on Purchase History
    3. Click on Return next to the title you're returning and follow the prompts.
    • I did that, but it says I can't return it. Must be a time limit on returns? I bought it on the 17th April.

      • That's weird, it's giving me the option to return all the books I purchased in April, except for a freebie I picked up.

Good book. But with Audible it all depends on who is reading it.

Someone called William Roberts is narrating this one who seems to have done all the Bryson books. Checked out the sample and I find his voice irritating. YMMV.

Good prompt irate, thanks. Just listened and I agree completely. The topic needs a voice with some gravitas - or at least doesn't sound like it belongs in a cartoon.
Edit: I see below there's a version read by Bryson for those really interested in the read version. Personally I'd buy the book.

Great book, packed with well-research info as is typical of Bryson. For those who've yet to read any of his stuff I highly recommend all of his earlier travel books. Very entertaining and full of well-researched, little known facts and anecdotes.

  • Another great audio book is Sapiens (didnt like his other books as much) also the Future of Humanity by Michio Kaku is also not bad. A brief history is definitely one of the best though.

  • make you seem more intelligent when discussions about atomic particles

    You got me there

  • Brilliant book read by bill.

  • One of my favourite ever books. Getting a bit long in the tooth now for a science based book, but just a fantastic overview of a lot of stuff.

  • I really enjoyed reading this book the first time, the second time not as much.

  • I almost picked this up at Harry's on the weekend, so glad I didn't.

  • Dammit! I actually used my free credit to get this book last month.

I'm listening to it now and enjoying it. I think the narrator is pretty good (after taking half a chapter or so to get used to his accent).

  • +1 great book!

  • I got it on credit 6 days ago :| Oh well, got the 14.95 credit instead.

Love Bill Bryson, and this is an excellent book. Mr Bryson's books mainly fall into non-fiction books such as the one in this offer, and humorous travel journals.
My other favourite non-fiction books of his include:
    - The Body: his most recent book about the human body
    - At Home: A Short History of Private Life - history of how the modern home came together over the years. More interesting than it sounds.
    - Mother Tongue: history of the English language

This book is rated highly but i haven't gotten around to reading it
    - One Summer: America, 1927

    • The Body will be excellent! Might pick that up next.

Free after you've paid your subscription?

    • yeah free for $16

I just renenwed my sub with a one month trial. Got given an additional 2 credits to use, so grabbed this book, then will grab two others then cancel…..so 3 free books really

      • They offered me an extra free credit when I cancelled my free trial, you might end up with four free books.

  • This is good. We were made to read it as part of Chemistry, but it didn't seem like a chore.

Yeah but I have unsubscribed from audible :(

Brilliant book but there's a better version that's actually read by Bill Bryson

  • My membership of Audible.com.au had expired but I managed to start a (new) trial subscription with this book narrated by Bill Bryson and also acquire the version narrated by William Roberts for free.

Why did I get both? They were free :-) and @eruption mentioned above that Bill's narrated version was better.

However, I also noted that Bill's narrated version suggests its length is 5 hrs and 48 mins, whereas the version narrated by William is 18 hrs and 59 mins. Perhaps they read at very different speeds :-)
