[NSW, SA, VIC, WA, QLD] WD 1TB My Passport External SSD - USB Type C - $139 Pickup @ Officeworks

1620

Officeworks has dropped the price of these again, might be able to snag one if you weren't swayed by the Amazon/JB pricing.

Seems to be clearance stock with pickup only but looks to be a few dotted around at various stores.

Does not appear to be in stock in some states.

It has a durable design and can withstand a 1.98 metre drop.

Don't you dare try to drop it from 2 meters though.

    • +1

i have (and do) toss around my T5 and she's still going strong after ~8 Months. I know its never as strong as manufacturers suggest, but she's pretty sturdy

      • Would you buy one of these over a T5?

        • I probably wouldn't purely base on how happy I am with my T5 but 1tb for 139 is a pretty solid deal. The SanDisk one sits in a rugged rubber housing so thatd be solid as well for the right price but ye WDs in general have not been kind to me in the past so my view would be kinda bias.

    • +3

In fairness 99.9% of the people are under 2 metres in height.

    • dont forget the drive itself has 2 cm thick

  • +6

Hmmm. Anyone know if these are shuckable?

    • Shouldnt all portable drives be shuckable?

      • +1

Should be but WD has soldered drives to the usb interface previously.

Edit: appears to mostly be 2.5" not 3.5" that are soldered by WD

      • +1

Nope. Looks like the 2015 version of this had integrated USB interface, NOT SATA…

    • +1

But why bother (and void the warranty) when you can get a 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD for few dollars more ? I've seen them sell for as low as $125 recently.

      • +4

Really? can you provide a link.
I've been monitoring and haven't seen any that are good value

        • +1

Can't find a cheaper deal right now. Something like a Crucial BX500 1TB can be bought for $158 now. Found this expired link from a month ago for the same drive for $140.

          • -2

@opt: But BX is BS from everything I've read.

    • appears to be an m.2 on a board based on 512gb model

edit: other tech review pages are confirming a m.2 form factor.

      • Definitely m.2 - the entire thing is half the size of a 2.5" SSD

  • +3

    256GB $139
    512GB $239
    1TB $139

    Nice find OP
my local store seems to have them in stock also :P

Just got Click and Collect confirmation :)
Phew.. they said up to 2 days.. so was worried it would get sold before being picked :P

    • +1

Many stores have a tolerance of 3-5 units for this reason

  • +1

MMmm price error? some interesting pricing depending on size

    • maybe, google search still show 239

  • +9

    1TB SSD for $139 is a steal.

    • Come back two years from now and say the same thing ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Ooh my local seems to have some stock!

  • Got two. Been waiting for a decent deal for a while. Thank you OP.

    • which store?

      • Alexandria NSW, probably too late now.

        • after your post, definitely too late… LoL

  • Only mentions that it is compatible with Windows and Mac. So not with Chromebooks or to run to your TV ? Shame, great price.

    • +1

      Or lazy marketing…

      • Might pop in to Officeworks to see. Don't know why they can't be used for either. Anyone know ?

        • +8

Its a hard drive, it can be formatted for anything. As mentioned above, windows and mac are listed to appeal to the masses.

  • Great deal, OP! much appreciated.

  • already got the Samsung 1TB portable SSD for $79 on eBay last time…still quite empty.. should I get this one? hmmm

    • How the hell did I miss that deal???

      • +2

It was one of those hourly eBay Plus deals such as the $99 AirPods, had to be very lucky to snag one in the first few seconds.

        • I would say this office works deal is kind of a similar deal.. you have to be very lucky to snag one. I guess I paid too much for my 500gb T5 about 7 months ago.

I have formatted it to 2 partition fat32 and nfts so I can get write/delete to fat32 and read 4.5gig+ files on nfts. Works like a charm on Android.

  • Nice, almost got the Samsung one yesterday.

Epping, VIC showed no stock. But also limited please call. Went in and got the last 2.

    • the staff there told me someone just came and got the last 2 lol. I got the last one at Bundoora

      • Ha! Glad you got one, at least! I expected them to have none, as they had like 6-8 empty boxes on display, I took up 2 boxes. She said we have 2, you want them both?

  • +1

Just picked mine from OW Pitt st Sydney. This deal is 100% legit

  • +1

Shows limited stock at a few of my locals but if I try to check out online to says that it's out of stock.
I guess they're online inventory systems are out of whack and give different results depending on how you search.

  • +2

    and its gone

  • Make sure you update the "my store" to be the one you want for pickup. Solved the "adds to cart but out of stock at checkout" issue for me.

    • Simply get Unavailable Online in that situation.

  • +1

Some left at Highett , just bought one

  • +7

You can click here to see all stores with stock and how many they have. Stores without stock are hidden.

It's important to remember that this is not always accurate and it often shows stock when there is none.

  • Showing no stock in ACT at all

  • Damn, out of stock in the Brisbane area :/

  • Got the last one at WA Osborne Park.

    • Haha. I picked one up about 5 mins before you. They told me mine was the last one!

      • I saw a couple put aside for pickup so I think they're out of them now

  • Pick up the last one in person at Chadstone thanks OP

    • I was on the phone trying to get this, but the phone just kept on hanging up (see below post)

      Good job!

      • Yeah I tried to call on my way there too to check if thereโ€™s stock but no answer. Sorry to be that customer in store ๐Ÿ˜‚ cheers!

  • Anyone know if there is a 'buffer' between the OW online orders and what is actually at the store?

Eg. some shops will have exactly online what is available at the shop shelf - annoying because if you buy online, in the time it takes for staff to go get it, a customer in the store may purchase it.

On the other hand, some other shops have a buffer to exactly prevent this, eg. their online stock goes to zero when only 2 left on the shelf.

I have a confirmation email of my order, but no collection confirmation yet (hopefully) - I've tried ringing a few stores to confirm the above.

    • The actual SSDs are not on the shelf, only empty display boxes. They are behind the counter. But I don't think the staff checks the stock level before grabbing them if anyone shows up.

      • Finally got through to the store and they said that although my online order is there, the item has been set aside for a phone hold/request. So they prioritise the phone hold over the online order confirmation.

        • Did they mention what's gonna happen to your order then?

          • +1

@nosrad: Just got off phone with OW head office (maybe?) - basically, the store told me they'd hold the phone order over the online order and gave me a number to call to check warehouse stock. There's no more stock in the warehouse.

I queried the whole physical vs online purchase and consultant said that something went wrong with the order, as my online order should've only gone through (even with store pick up) if there was stock in the warehouse when there was none.

I didn't question it further because she did say that the item wasn't a clearance or end-of-stock line, such that they'll get more in in a few weeks when re-stock occurs.

I have just now received an SMS saying that my order has been delayed and to refer to email which hasn't arrived yet.

            • @Porker: It shouldn't be end of line, but I think it's a price error. They had 139 for both 1tb and 256gb.

            • @Porker: I have the same email and the SMS came after that. Both SMS and email say the same thing. The only thing extra in the email is a Track button which is no different from keying in your order number to the tracking site : https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/track-your-order

  • So i did get a text saying that my click and collect order is ready at officeworks. But the text said that for pickup details i should refer to the email that they sent. But i didn't get an email. Usually i get both at the same time. Hopefully there's no issue there and i'm able to pick it up. Anyone else that got click and collect get the email as well?

    • The confirmation email is the one they mean.
It has the directions for contactless click and collect

  • Got the last from QV.

  • +5

    Comon Amazon!

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
Called the "local" OW @ Tuggerah and they had one in stock, asked for it to be put aside so I could collect.
Thought of doing an online order to make sure I had my name on it but then it showed Temp out of stock at that store.
Went and picked it up without a problem.

  • Got email from Officework Ferntree Gully - Ready to collect - that is quick

  • I am a bit late to the party, can't find it anywhere :(

  • nice got pickup ready

  • +1

WA out of stock by the looks. Bugger, itโ€™s a great price.

    • Just walked into Officeworks Cannington 6107 at 3PM, shelves had display boxes without the price discount displayed. Took it to the counter and confirmed it was $139 and she had at least 8 behind the counter.
