First post, please be kind.

Was looking for a new drive for my new Unraid Parity, and saw this when I was looking around.

Back in stock 20th May

Might be wrong, but these seems like me to be a bargain basement price!
Alternatives like WD Red Pro, Seagate Ironwolf Pro are nearly double the price.

Happy hunting ;)

    But 4 tb…

  • Deal unavailable?

    • Looks like they took it down, may have been a mistake as the listing stated the drive was new. My order is still pending but lets wait and see.

  • Exactly…4tb?

  • Im always curious when you look at the equivalent listing on amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E939BFY) in this case it links to third party sellers that are providing the stock. so is Amazon simply the middleman delivering this used item from the third party seller(s)? - https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00E939BFY/ref=dp_ol…

Listing states that this item is new. Although I did go down the same rabbit hole.

Is it cheap because they don't have the top covers on the hard drive like the picture.
Won't the data escape if they are not locked in?

    • not sure if this is a serious question?

      • I can't see why it wouldn't

    • Hard drives use magnets to hold the data down so it doesn't escape

    • As long as you lock the door, they might escape the drive, but can't escape your house.

Or shuck one of these and pick it up tomorrow Bad deal imo

Edit: don't worry i am brain dead. Great deal

    • Why can't you shuck it?

    • I haven't had much success with those SMR drives shucked from the Seagate Expansion Desktop 4TB enclosure. A few died in the desktop pc case. One even disappear from the system completely and then show up for a few seconds and then die again. It's the pox. I'm not buying any again no matter what.

      • I have 3 of these in my Unraid, haven't seen any issues thus far though.

        • So the seagate is a better deal?

          • -1

@toobzy: The Seagate is a better deal in pure $perTB, but for reliability, warranty & reputation a WD Essential is a better deal for shucking.

        • How long have you had the drives?.

Also don't use it for constant writes and used 24/7 as it dies quick smart. SMR drives just aren't good for that.

I used to use the drives 24/7 for downloading constant writing and it didn't even last a few months.

          • @hollykryten: My Unraid is mostly used for accessing media and files. The 3 drives are only spun up to read at varying hours in the day and not all at once, only written to when moving data from the cache once a day.
            They should be sufficient.
What were you writing to it 24/7? What kind of system was it in?

            • @thedean: Just a desktop pc for torrents.

Using these drives for 24/7 torrents = drive break down.

Just FYI these Ultra stars are very loud, they remind me of the hard disk's of the early noughties. They are very reliable according to the interwebs, have had them in my server for 2 years now.

    • Yes as it's a 7200rpm hard drive it's louder. Just like how the WD Black 7200rpm hard drives were loud. It's designed as a performance consumer hard drive.

      • Do you have any? I'm talking big clunks when un-parking and loud seeking noises. The louder spin noise is normal for 7200 but not the rest :)

        • The reviews are vastly inconsistent, do you have the same model number as this listing? The 7K4000?

          • @thedean: They are definately 7K4000 4TB UltraStars. I like the noises, it's very nostalgic, just wouldn't want one in my living room :)

  • DO NOT buy HGST drives anymore. I have several and they've been great but ever since HGST has been bought out by Western Digital the customer service is ABYSMAL. It took 3.5 months and literally weekly calls and emails to keep chasing my my RMA for 2 drives showing problems. It was THE MOST HOPELESS, Indian call centre I've ever had to deal with. They literally didn't even know themselves who looks after HGST. After 3.5 months they still only sent 1 out of the 2 drives replaced and the replacement they sent me were refurbished drives that were made in 2017!

DO NOT TOUCH THEM WITH A BARGE POLE!

These were once great drives by a good company…now WD owns them they have turned to sh*t.

Contrast that with my Seagate experience last year where unfortunately their drives were not so good. One had failed 2 years out of warranty but as the entire batch failed over 5 years I thought I would contact them. Well despite being out of warranty for 2 years, in one phone call the guy organised a free replacement and had it at my door couriered from Singapore in 5 days AND the drive was brand new not refurbished from a century ago.

    • Yep this has been my experience with WD vs Seagate customer service.

I did grab one of these though (Before the deal went down), they're reportedly really solid drives, so not looking forward to dealing with WD but at this price i'll suck it up.

      • My drive arrived today.
Smart status show that the drive hasn't been used, however I'm in the process of preclearing (basically reading, writing & reading every sector), and i've found a Current pending sector = 1 so far.

        Hopefully yours is better..

        • No luck on mine yet, it was "shipped" but I contacted DHL and they told me they never received the package and that the seller has only created a label.

These were once great drives by a good company…now WD owns them they have turned to sh*t.

The drives themselves haven't; they're literally manufactured in the same plants that HGST used with the same processes (which WD acquired as part of the buyout). Hell, the firmware codes for the WD Ultrastars are identical to the old HGST Ultrastars.

They still have 2.5 million hour MBTFs and 5 year warranties.

The RMA process for all HDDs are a royal PITA, regardless of manufacturer.

  • How do you know it will be back in stock on the 20th?

  • Someone must have found a pallet of these in the back of a warehouse somewhere as HGST-branded HDDs haven't been manufactured since 2018.

Still great HDDs for your NAS/microserver purposes; I have an array of HGST Ultrastars, Deskstars and current-gen, WD-branded Ultrastars all running without issue.

    • What I fear more is Amazon doing what they do in the US even if it was 'fulfilled by Amazon'. They sell a bunch of refurbished drives that aren't necessarily marked as such. Just have a look at HDDs over there on Amazon.com where you have to go to reviews to figure out if the drive you're sent is actually new or simply a pull from a farm with SMART wiped.

      • Well that and damage during transit (since Amazon love to shove your loose HDDs into a much larger box with no cushioning) are two of the reasons I'll never order HDDs from Amazon.

  • +2

For anyone that might be interested, mine arrived with 22585 hours usage and 2214 reallocated sector counts. Piss poor attempt to hide the fact they were used as they didn't even try to wipe the SMART information.
