K&N Performance Silver Oil Filters from $7.33 Delivered @ Precision International via Catch

410

The free delivery seemed a bit too good to be true when I first saw it, so I ordered a PS-2010 for $8.99 and and received it.

Repco sells K&N PS range for $10.49, at least the ones I can see that fit my family's cars.

Precision International have listed the Ryco equivalent part numbers so you could look them up on Supercheap Auto for price and fitment comparison. If Supercheap also shows a compatible K&N Performance Gold HP-series part, the Performance Silver PS-series equivalent has the same numbers following.

I'd recommend cross referencing OEM part numbers: https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/

Then cross check the datasheets for dimensions and threading on the K&N website against the Ryco site to guarantee correct fitment.

About double the price as compared to factory. So a good deal! Unsure if the quality is in them. Definitely trading on the name here. I have no doubt they are up to standard but certainly not performance filters by any means. A plus from me though due to price.

Bare in mind the filter element in these don't catch much dirt. They are design to let oil flow through with very little restriction compared to the OEM stuff. Same deal with their air filters.

    • +1

Have you got a source for that? I would think that that is only true for the filters designed specifically for motorsports application such as the Powersports line.

      • +4

If he's got a source, I'll eat one of those filter elements.

    • +2

That is true of K&N's air filters, but there's no data that suggests their oil filters are the same.

Their flow claims seem to be mostly marketing speak, as the filter media efficiency (or micron rating if you like) is not the only thing that affects it - it is also dependent on oil pressure and surface area.

I've looked up the Performance Silver enough to be pretty confident they perform just as well as any other branded filter, and conclude there's not much to be concerned as long as I stick to manufacturer recommended oil change intervals. Just don't touch the generic filters on eBay that may even miss features such as bypass and anti-drain back valves.

Here's a rudimentary test that, though not very scientific, already suggests that K&N PS and all other branded aftermarket filters perform better than the OEM part in this particular application. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/evo-engine-turbo-drivetrai… Keep in mind K&N PS filters are no longer manufactured by Champion in the US.

Of course, for simplicity and peace of mind, I'd recommend sticking with OEM.

Better off changing oil more frequently than comparing which filter brand is better, This is a good deal thanks OP

      So many experts here hey?
A filter is a filter, i'm sure if they were sub-standard they wouldn't be on the market..

      • +2

        Oils aint oils Sol…

      • +2

lol there are a lot of sub-standard car parts (or anything else, for that matter) on the market.

"buyer beware" exists for that reason

        • Agreed, but i'm fairly confident they're not branded 'K&N'..

      • Plenty of cheap substandard oil filters out there.

They look good on the outside but internally have issues such as:
filter material doesn't filter down to the required microns.
        Less filter material area
Poor functioning or totally missing drain back valves.
poor manufacture quality (pressed rather than welded, no glue holding filtering material in place, etc. I used to buy Ford and Holden filters for $1 when a Ryco was $6. They were built to a price and showed it when pulled apart.

    thx OP, bought 3..

Got z154's which weren't much cheaper than usual but free postage made the deal for me..

  • +1

Thanks op, bought 3! Should last me about 3 years (1 oil change per year/10,000km).

    • You are supposed to do it every 6 months or whatever comes first

      • +2

        Depends on the car

Not all cars are every 6m any more

  • +1

Thanks Op, great find just in time for another service !

There are plenty of cheap and nasty car parts around but these should be okay. A clue to whether parts are inferior/counterfeit (which look almost identical) copies is usually price, and country of origin to a lesser extent.

    Here's a rough guide to K&N quality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Ap-F4xals

Personally I stick to Ryco for all my oil, air and cabin filters but buy in bulk when on special.

    • I've been using Ryco but generally speaking their prices have crept up. Wix oil filters available from Sparesbox on eBay are priced the same delivered yet have better efficiencies.

However I am a fan of their carbon activated cabin filters.

      • thought you use SCA brand oil filter for the win lol

        • I would if they sold a spin-on one for my car haha. SCA oil filters are the same thing as Wesfil/Cooper which is owned by GUD, the parent company of Ryco. Though am not sure if it's across the range. The weird thing is Supercheap sells the Wesfil equivalent for my car for more than the Ryco. It's usually the other way around.

Anyway, I ordered a K&N PS the last time Repco had 30% off storewide.

          • @Junk Sifter: Oooo traitor that didn't buy from his own deal lolol

I'm still cut from buying 6 bottles of Valvoline before 40% off hit

            • @Poor Ass: The PS-2010 I ordered this time is for my father's car!

But yeah I feel ya, man. Hope you got the credit back at least.

  • Would there be much quality difference between these and ryco?

    • +2

      None,

If you change the oil 6 months or 10k km whichever ones come first you are fine
The filter is as good as the oil change service.

Alot of people think its the oil filter but if you use a decent one not an ebay special you are fine.

      • They do eBay specials on decent filters too

  • Anyone know what fits a 2016 Ford Focus 1.5L Ecoboost? SCA says either HP-1002 or PS-1002 but not sure if it actually will fit as Sparesbox doesn't list it as compatible.

    • +1

Sparesbox isn't really the best for comparability. I've bought stuff from there that they said was compatible but they just end up giving me a refund

If you crossed referenced a ryco filter to a k&n and you get 1002… HP or PS would fit the same.

Go the PS it is cheaper and I think you a paying more for the HP for the wrench off nut. They claim HP has a little bit better material but if you do oil changes regularly it wouldn't make much difference which ever one you buy

      • Agree, you can't rely on the Sparesbox website for accurate compatibility info. I bought Ryco oil filters from Sparesbox (on special) after confirming with Ryco themsleves that the part was compatible with my vehicle (their online tool said it was but I emailed anyway). The Sparesbox website said they were NOT suitable. I let Sparesbox know, don't know if they changed their advice.

Simple job to use the Ryco catalogue search then cross reference with the SCA search to confirm.

      • Cheers mate, trying to find the 1002 models on Catch but can't seem to find them though

Edit: damn I think they're sold out. Google returns results but they don't go to the product page anymore :(

        • Looks like they've taken all the single oil filters off Catch. I've marked the deal expired.

The last time I ordered a K&N for my car from Repco they gave me a PS-1002 which is the Ryco Z418 equivalent. My Mazda6 doesn't require an anti-drain back valve so Ryco actually recommends Z632, but from what I've read it doesn't hurt to run a filter with one.

If you don't mind picking it up you can probably get it from Repco with 25% off storewide: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/536969

          https://www.repco.com.au/en/parts-service/filtration/oil-fil…

          • @Junk Sifter:

The last time I ordered a K&N for my car from Repco they gave me a PS-1002 which is the Ryco Z418 equivalent.

Hmm well SCA, Sparesbox and Ryco state the compatible Ryco filter for my Focus is the Z781. But yeah SCA also states the PS/HP-1002 are also compatible.

I've got $10 SCA loyalty credit so I think it'll be cheaper to get it from them instead of Repco/Sparesbox.
