Cheapish price on a good 10TB drive.
Cheapest ever was around $263.

Shucking the drive gets a 10TB Seagate Barracuda Pro which is not SMR.

I believe there is no Cashback at the moment but don't forget to use discounted gift cards.

LOL the oz bargain starter kit

    • I'm waiting for the 12TB Wd's to break back into the $330 range. Not long to go with the dollar holding at 65c (assuming it can continue that)

    • Is this non SMR as well?

      • No

      • Yes, this is non SMR

    • $393 total

      • Yeah its gone up now. Delivery is still free with Prime, if you dont have prime its like $7 for a month so delivery is $7.

Wasn't the 12tb seagate not much more a few days ago?

    • There was the 12TB WD?

Finally! Enough HDD space to put all that por… spreadsheets…

      portable distros? :P

  • The 8TB is also a good price. Would it have a Barracuda pro inside too?

    • +1

No not guaranteed. Could be a SMR drive.

Seagate only make 10TB Barracuda Pros. So Seagate 10TB desktop drives are "safe" to buy for now.

    • My 8tb had a regular baracuda.

    • If you want 8TB, grab the Western Digital for $248 which is non-SMR ('white label' Reds)

      • Need 4 drives, Amazon limits me to 2 drives :-(

        • Is it per account or per order?

      • +1

Depends. WD Reds can be SMR too these days.

        • Not at that size, 8TB and up are not SMR

        • +1

Only 6TB and under. Everything 8TB and above for WD is non-SMR.

          • @Satirical: +1 even though I don't have any internal WD drives the SMR reveal loses a lot of my trust. I'd rather get a barracuda pro over a white/red drive.

    • I bought a standalone 8tb for an awesome price last night. I'm in Japan hence the amazon link. I hope this price becomes an option for Australia amazon soon. It was a similar price in US with conversion too.

      • So whats the price delivered in AUD?

        • Google conversion says 14300 jpy is $205AUD, and I'm guessing up to $40AUD shipping, if they ship to Australia.

      • Isn't that SMR? (ST8000DM004)

        • according to this, yes.

But being 5400rpm, its slow anyway. Im using it for backup storage and movies, speed wont be a massive factor for how I use it.

          • +1

@DarthAntz: My CMR 5400rpm WD REDs are not slow…

IMO 5400rpm vs 7200rpm isn't really that important any more. 5400rpm is more than fast enough, and much much quieter and cooler.

            • @Zorlin: Good to know! Thanks for the share

              • @DarthAntz: To put some specific numbers on it, I get 190MB/s reads, and I think around 170MB/s writes, which is more than enough to saturate my NAS' gigabit connection.

                • @Zorlin: So from the article i shared, SMR is a bad rep because its slow? I'm not sure why SMR is an issue otherwise.

Those speeds are more than enough for media and backup.

                  • @DarthAntz: SMR has terrible random I/O performance, even worse than a "normal" mechanical hard drive. Write performance also tanks very badly after writing a modest amount of data.

The speeds I just mentioned are for CMR, not SMR.

  • the amazon prices are volatile at the mo: I grabbed a 12tb WD over the weekend for 343. A few hours later it was 353, now it's 375. I wouldn't be surprised if it drops back to 330 over the next few weeks

    • I think prices for items on the US store fluctuate due to the exchange rate.

      • The dollar hasn't fluctuated that crazy. I would say it's due to demand of the product.
