      Completely different game.

The digital version you've linked is the original Yooka Laylee. The impossible lair is $45

  • Which yooka laylee is better?

    • +3

In terms of sheer quality, Impossible Lair.

But Impossible Lair is a DKC styled 2d platformer at its core whereas the original is a 3D platformer more akin to Banjo Kazooie (which was the purpose of this franchise to begin with).

The first has more of a mixed response in general.

Impossible Lair is very high quality, but has slightly fallen victim to people thinking it was a true sequel which I believe has brought the metacritic user scores down a little

      • Again this is a constant issue with the stupid Switch store.

I know about the optional Yooka Laylee being bad because I've seen reviews of it on YouTube.

I would've never even known this wasn't the same game.

Why does Nintendo insist on hiding any reviews or scoring for their giant store.

          You're having a lot of non-issues here.

Switch port of the original Yooka Laylee is excellent in terms of the technical side of things. Game is polished. Subjectively speaking, there are some issues that people have with level layouts and size. Otherwise it's still quite a good game if you go into it expecting a 90s styled 3D platformer.

Saying you wouldn't know the difference between Yooka Laylee and Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair is also not the fault of Nintendo or Playtonic. It's like saying you didn't buy tickets to Spider-Man: Far From Home because you already saw Spider-Man in 2001 so I don't know how to help you on that one.

Review scores on the eshop also wouldn't help you as both are well-liked games overall

Yooka Laylee has a 75 and 7.4 on Metacritic

Yooka Laylee and The Impossible Lair has an 80 and 7.7 on Metacritic.

Reviews and opinions on the two games are pretty tight and a star-based review system would likely not help you distinguish between the two

        • Showing reviews on the store is a terrible idea as games are so subjective. The most effective way to show a review is by score and that is flawed system. People will review bomb and a bunch of shenanigans (this game is overrated, I am going to give botw 1 star).

If you want to read a review, just read it online.

      • Thanks for the description. I was hoping for a true sequel. Not a huge fan of DKC style platformers.

        • have you played A Hat in Time?
