After the success of the F4-220 I reached out to TerraMaster to see if they could offer a deal on this NAS as they have plenty of stock and they were happy to provide.

It uses Realtek's RTD1296 Quad-Core CPU which is designed for media playback, 2 SATA slots, 1GB RAM, 1 Gbe Ethernet port, 2 USB 3.0 ports on the rear, RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD support and up to 16TB in each bay.

          I'd say this would be more than enough for basic websites incl. wordpress. Unless you're running resource intensive scripts.

      Some people want less features. One big gripe I have for business use and personal use is the amount of bloat crap these NAs’s seem to have - some people or uses just want “network attached storage” not media streaminf, downloading, or what we other garbage seems to add overhead. If there was a NAS that had no features I would be more inclined to buy.

    Sounds like a good deal… although comparing it to the Synology is only partially fair, the Synology OS and support is worth the extra.

    Man, I know it's unrelated but I have some old parts lying around and was looking at setting up UnRaid. Mainly for Plex. I just read today that apparently the GTX970 I have lying around doesn't do hardware decoding but hybrid decoding for x265 which I was told was bad. Should I just sell my old parts and just get a Synology/build a new system that has native decoding instead?

      I'm in the same boat. I have a spare pc laying around that I wanted to make into a Nas. I'm also torn! Then I am stuck on which solution to go with: unraid/OMV/freenas etc. A pc will consume way more electricity but you have a lot of room for expansion. A nas has fixed bays and probably an OS which you won't be able to do much with.

      Your call. DIYing a solution can be very rewarding but buying one can solve many potential problems. I built up many rock solid NAS boxes for friends and family 5-10+ years ago before there were slick, affordable Synology type solutions available but after buying my first Synology about 5 years ago I'll never go back.

      I've got a file server running UnRAID and would never go back. The flexibility for what you can run on it, the upgrade options, etc., plus if you've got the parts you don't have to shell out hundreds for a diskless NAS.

      Vodafone TV box will solve the x265 problem.
      Run a Pi 4 with a portable drive over USB with Jellyfin (Emby fork) as the server library and use their free app for the client/remote for casting.
      I have done this for about $95 and I am absolutely impressed how well it all works.

      Unlikely supported. But you can simply do the decoding on the client side (if you watch it using an Apple TV or similar)

        You are assuming my use case and requirements. You are wrong.

        Edit - to clarify, you don't know how much space I need, or what I am storing. Nor what size disks I might be using and whether I'd even be buying new disks for this. And then a two bay limits my ability to have parity and more than one data drive etc.

        Edit, and I am negged for wanting a 4 Bay over a 2 bay, nice work.

    To save anyone time researching, this uses a Realtek chip, which is ARM-based CPU architecture. Xpenology does not have a bootloader written for ARM cpus. So you can not install xpenology on this unit.

    Personally wouldn't get a 2-Bay NAS. The entire point of running a NAS is to use ZFS or btrfs which are unavailable in Windows. 2-Bay NAS will actually work out to be more expensive if you need redundancy (which you should). I'd say the best setup for home use is a 4-Bay in a RAID-5. If you do the maths, you'll actually find that it still works out to be cheaper per GB to get a 4-Bay in RAID-5.

    For example, if you need 8TB (just using prices for WD Red from MSY). Your options (with 1 drive redundancy) are:

    2-Bay NAS + 2 x 8TB in RAID 1 = $200 + 2 x $398 = ~$1000
    4-Bay NAS + 3 x 4TB in RAID 5 = $350 + 3 x $185 = ~$900

    Not to mention you could easily get 12TB by just getting an additional 4TB drive and still keep the RAID-5, which is fine for 4 drives at 4TB.

      I assume most people who run a NAS at home is for additional storage and backing up of files from their PC or laptop, or to share photos or movies. Which a 2 bay NAS will do just fine for 99% of users.

          The array space of RAID-5 is (n-1)*single drive space, with n being the number of drives. So three 4TB drives in a RAID 5 will provide 8TB usable space.

    Seems these things support Plex Media Server.

    Colour me interested, as I currently have Unraid running off a Ryzen 2400g based build that's housed in a sound dampened Fractal Design Define Mini. Runs a treat, but even at matx size it's a tad too big for my liking.

    Very keen for something more appliance sized atm.
