BOSE SoundWear Companion Speaker $249.95 ($499.95 RRP) Free Delivery on Bose Australia

410

Part of the Click Frenzy special offer.

I bought one last Christmas, and I think for $249.95 it is worth it. It is a good headphone replacement in warmer days.

You can price match in Bose retail stores(I assume they are re-open now?), which is exactly what I did.

It is funny that they listed Refurbished one for $349.95.

    It looks dumb

    • +2

Home use for me. Don't really care.

      • +3

Why dont you use a normal speaker?

  • +6

Anyone who uses those in public is an arsehole.

    • +2

Reminds me of when every now and then a junkie would board the train, playing music on his boombox. Good ol days, when we used to catch trains!

Actually the audio volume is not too bad to surrounding people. These speakers very cleverly aim directly at your ears so you as the primary listener get much louder volume than anyone around you. They're kinda like headphones without a closed back.

      • +1

I see you have yet to experience these on loud by a stranger in a tram.

I assure you, it is still obnoxious as people have mentioned.

      • +3

Let me add something…anyone using headphones with an open back in public is an arsehole too.

        • +1

I will have to second this.

  • +5

For personal use, i highly recommend it. People who are tired of earphones sticking in their ear or feel their ears pressed cause of the headphones, these are for you. I have it since it came out, i cant describe how good it turned out for me. but hey thats just me.

    • +4

Have one of these, used at home, walking around doing house work, best hand free and you're more aware of your surrounding, unlike earpod or headphone…it's really good for that, but using in a public places is no go.

      • +1

well of course, not in public. But i use it at my work. I just keep the vol at 30% no body hear shit cause everybody 1.5 mitre away :).

        • I can hear co-workers using headphones 1.5m away, let alone one of these.

    • Try aftershokz headphones. I have a pair and they're great and can be used in public too.

      • Got both trekz air and aeropex, love both. BTW air is very good for asmr purpose.

  • Yeah, go for the sunglasses in public places.

    • +1

Those sunglasses have pretty crap volume compared to the Soundwear though.

I think BOSE stores have closed AUS wide.

  • -1

What’s wrong with speakers? This is late stage capitalism at its finest.

  • Is this the newer model?

  • Are you supposed to wear this on your neck? Seriously?

    • +1

More like you wear it on your shoulder, this thing is better then what people think.

    • +1

Yeah they are are awesome though, they should really demo these more frequently and they would sell a ton more.

      • To tell you truth demo didn't get me. I just got it for fun, since u can return in 30 day because of Bose's no question ask return policy. well i be damn, got it home and was like "looks like they staying". well they did(still do).

      • They do demo them. I've seen them in JB and of course in Bose stores. I've tried them a few times and never been impressed. To me, they don't sound anywhere near as good as some people say they do.

This is not designed to replace headphones. It may have limited uses, but for some these are the specific use scenarios that make it appealing. I think Bose offer a no hassles return guarantee (90 days?). What appeals to me, is the personal nature of these and the open ear design. I have tinnitus and headphones are not an option, whatsoever (for me). Even a few minutes will result in increased perception of ringing. I don't listen to loud music and 99% of the time I am just looking for a way to enjoy podcasts or other spoken word recordings. Using a small bluetooth speaker is ok if I am home alone. Mostly, it is not an option, or a portable solution. This product may be the solution for home and walking around the neighbourhood for exercise - I ordered one and will see. I agree, this is not for general public scenarios (public transport etc.).

    • its 30 day but you wont be disappointed. It got base you know Real base. i did buy cheap one from us ebay but shit had very shity sound. you will enjoy the sound quality

      • +1

Can confirm website says 90-day risk free trial!

    • +1

Agree, I usually use them for podcast listening while I am cooking or washing dishes. And, when I said headphone replacement, it's because if I wear my Sony wh-1000xm3, my ear and skin around get all sweaty over time. I am worried about ear pads wearing out, which happened on my QC25.

So, Bose shipping was fast. Got this today. I'm pretty sure this will go back to Bose in the next few days. Here is why. The phasing issues with the low and low-mids really makes the listening experience unpleasant. From my understanding, Bose decided to do some low frequency specific phase swapping. Kudos for being adventurous, however, if I wanted to feel like I am in a funnel, then I would buy a large funnel for $15. My best description of the sound is placing your iPhone in a large empty plastic bucket. The 400-600Hz response dominates everything. For Audible books, I cut the bass and still sounds bad. Took these on a walk to the shops and found myself fighting with the direction of ambient sounds. Because the phasing is screwed, the ambient sounds just dominate. Your ears do not like phase cancelling so when a direct sound is presented, they will emphasise it. A car driving past, a gate closing and everything that you would usually just absorb becomes heightened in your awareness. I wish the Bose app had customisation to ditch the phasing BS and apply custom EQ. But, I guess for $500 retail, you'd think they had the basics sorted in the Soundwear design. I am going to stick with my Bose micro, which sounds amazing and is a fraction of the price. I figured out a way to attach it to a lanyard, so sound is now portable. I had high hopes for the Soundwear, but they do not do Bose any justice. The rest of their products are solid and top notch. I can see why they are clearing these out. Great build quality and features, but, the primary purpose is sound and they lack it (terribly). I've tried $5 office works headphones in the past, and they are on par with this. Anyway, I thought an update may be good for some. Do buy them if you are contemplating - you have 90 days to return. No risk. It is a product you need to test to see if you enjoy the audio.

  • I own these and they're excellent for riding with — as you get good volume and bass but still get full awareness of your surroundings. They're splash resistant so fine in rain and have good battery life.

  • How is this one with phone calls? I mean quality for caller and listener both?

    • its good, i use it car and at home i hear them and they hear me well.

  • I highly recommended. I bought one for fun when it was announced. I loved it.
Bought two more for my family.
Really useful when you dont want to use headphones or if you walk around your house a lot but still prefers to listen to music or other things at the same time.

    • Hey mate, have you tried using it for tv?

  • -3

You might as well buy those LV dumbells for $2k if you want to be an absolute shit stain of a human

  • Here's a video from my favourite tech-boomer about these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk4vcqUr2vQ

  • Seems pretty niche, like Japanese niche. Or something you could only really use if you lived alone. Also not suitable for tv, that eliminates a likely best use case for it.

    • Here's one recent review on the Bose site: "We have these paired to out TV. Now my husband can watch his action movies without disrupting the entire house! It was bad, he watches the TV so loud you can hear it everywhere. He had the floors vibrating. Now, I can sleep, study, cook,or talk on the phone while he enjoys his movies. I can barely hear it sitting next to him, and I can't hear it at all anywhere else in the house."

I bought and returned it. The sound and bass are to thin for my liking. If you turn it up loud enough you might as well get something like Soundlink 2.

    • +1

I just got these and they are going back immediately. The low-end phase cancelling is a silly concept by Bose for this product. Bose funnel-wear is more accurate.

  • +1

If anyone purchases this, I have some Google Glass they can buy off me as well to complete the look.

  • Mine just arrived today - I love it. Thanks OP.
