  • Yeah, i love MG because…..wait, what?

  • +7

Oh dear, what are they thinking? Who'd buy their POS?!

Just make sure you book the test drive through the site, otherwise they'll deny the claim

    • +8

Hey Spack, make sure you get all of your RAV4 customers to score a couple hundred bucks in their pockets. 😂

    • The way I see it, they’ve just added $200 to the price of their car

  • +8

Pretty good deal if you are about 2 buy a car quick drive for a free 200 bucks

  • Test drive that and then the C5 Aircross or 3008/5008, i'd be very surprised if you chose the MG

    • +7

They are 20 grand more than MG HS.

  • +1

Why do manufacturers offer this? They've given you a reason not to buy their car.

    • +1

      Too self confident XD

I heard nowadays MG are very bad.

      • +2

        Only nowadays?

        • +2

Old MG's were crappy quality but they were cool. These new cars are shitboxes with a logo they bought in a bankruptcy sale

    • +1

      Get people into the showroom

    • They don't even have enough people to check out their car 🙈

    • To make you feel guilty of not purchasing their car after the test drive.

    • +1

They've probably just hired a bunch of ex timeshare salesmen and figured they'd pressure a bunch of people into buying their cars.

  • +3

Get $200 from MG if You Purchase a Similar Competitor's SUV

    I'm confused

    • +12

They reckon you'll like their Chinese made SUV so much you'll buy it.

      Nah.

  • +3

They must be really confident about their Chinese car… or they will Prob decline on some technicality

  • Almost as if they believe a test drive will convince you to buy an MG >o<

    • Hot persistent sale girl might do the trick

  • +4

    "brimming with sophisticated British Style"

Had a little bit of a chuckle.

  • +13

well, instead of making up some marketing bullshit, they decided to be honest

    what it means is:

    DO NOT BUY OUR MG

WE KNOW HOW BAD IT IS

WE WILL ACTUALLY PAY YOU TO GO AND BUY OTHER CAR

  • +3

In all fairness, this review is not too bad.
I know nothing about cars though. Except that I have had issues even with the big brands.

    • +12

Caradvice has been all about paid content since Alborz sold it to Nine, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

      • Thanks, will need to remember that in future. They used to be quite good.

        • +1

Yeah he left and took his team to build what caradvice used to be. They’re called carexpert.com.au now.

      • +4

Same with Wheels awarding Car of the Year to the Mercedes EQC which caused a bit of an uproar in the industry. To be honest its a very average electric car with the only thing going for it the fact it's electric.

Gone are the days of unbiased reviews

        • They event suspected reader comment on Drive, there used to be two readers making endless comments.

    • I have driven MG HS and was pleasantly surprised by it.

      • More detail please.

        • +3

okay… Without the badge it looks like Mazda Cx5. Interior is pretty premium and I was in the market for an SUV and had driven quite a few. Its got all the safety features you can think of in the base model itself.Interior quality was actually good. Driving was ok. Ride was a bit stiff. Its got 7 speed DCT I think. It was alright for a DCT. 1.5l petorl turbo. Power and torque was ok. 10 inch touch screen with apple car play and android auto was excellent. There was electric tailgate as well. It was all for 34k driveaway with 7 year warranty and 7 year unlimited km warranty and 7 year road side assist.similar configuartion Suvs in other brands costs atleast 10 grand more.

Cons: Unknown brand, 6 month servicing interval

          • @carlJack: It is 12 month servicing or 10,000km. Whichever comes first.

  • +8

Cheap Chinese crap banking on the hopes that people still believe the brand is British.

The price gives it away that it's all Chinese.

    • Honestly even they crank up RRP to 100k there is no different… No one wants their car

  • +7

When will xiaomi build cars 🤔🤣

    • +6

Hmm….. if Xiaomi built cars, they would look fantastic, be built to last, and have all the specs. But 6 out of 7 gears would work, the steering wheel would be on the left because it was designed for another market, voice control would only support mandarin, and it would have a beautiful heads-up display showing a speed that has a 15% margin of error. After a year they provide a major firmware upgrade which breaks everything, shortly after which they stop supporting it.

I have owned a Xiaomi phone, Mibox, thermometer, hairdryer, lightstrips, smart bulbs, vacuum and then some - it's all great value for money, but not all smooth sailing unfortunately.

      • No Upgrade mate, also full of ADs on the odometer and every window screens…LoL

        • +2

Also we need coupon code from gearbest, geekbuying, banggood, etc.

  • +2

Some things are better left buried and not resurrected…like cough MG….

  • +3

Still a lot of money to spend on a car built with inferior materials, don't really want a car with a subframe that rusts.

    • Wow, you've seen (or read about) a new MG with a rusty subframe? Where?
Actually, while I think of it, my Falcon needed rust in the frame patched before I could sell it.

  • +3

My neighbour has a MG , she was raving so much about her new car 2 years ago . Now she is constantly complaining about the Rust in her Car .

  • This is some incredibly ballsy marketing, I cant say this isnt going to backfire for them but i'm impressed none the less.

  • Excluded the Kia Seltos…. A car it will definitely lose out too and is in the same category I'd say

  • Weird they allow it with the Vitara, haggle the fully featured all grip turbo diesel for a bit more then the base model of this.

  • +1

Easy money, if this was last year I would gladly took on the offer, then walk out the door and continue to buy the CRV as planned.

  • Wonder if there would be issues on producing a sales contract dated before the test drive?

    • Sounds like fraud.

      • Yeah I don't think you know what fraud means. If I signed a contract for a different SUV two weeks ago and my test drive is two weeks in the future, what part of that is fraudulent?

    • Why would they give you $200 if you've already committed to buy another car?

      • They are nice people.

  • Any dealers or states that have some kind of satisfaction warranty or sunset clause on car sales?

  • I have a car in that list that will get delivered only after another month or so. Anyway I can get away with the $200?

    • +1

prior to purchasing one of the below vehicles listed within the SUV Medium

Not if you've already purchased it.

      • +1

Just put down a deposit on the new car. Damn :P

        • +1

The way I read it is if you haven't collected the car yet (fully commited to the purchase), you should be eligible. I emailed them to confirm and will report back what they say.

      • What constitutes as 'purchase'? Putting a deposit down? For all they know I could cancel my deposit because the MG knocked my socks off.

        • +1

Let us know how you go.

    • +1

If you have signed the contract which is dated then you would be out of luck.

  • +2

1st , I SAY NO TO ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA , and I prefer made in Thailand or korea for cars. Getting parts for this car Is a night mare after car accident , 2-3 weeks waiting period for the parts , from an ex owner that I know

    • +2

Some Volvos are made in China.

      Soon Tesla too.

    • Really? Check your home and see how much stuff is made in China.

  • Got all excited and then realised the car we just bought isn't in the list :(

Upvoting because free money for those who are eligible.

  • +2

The best Chinese cars are not selling in Australia. MG is like 2 or 3 class brands. The first class are

Link&Co, Lots of young pp buying it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZrhkz6uPvs
ChangAN changan cs75 plus. Designed by former MAZDA designer.
Geely etc. BTW this one owns Volvo.

The Chinese car industry now is like 10-20 years ago South Korea car industry. Don't surprise if one day you will see these brands.

    • That Link&Co looks rather nice. Their marketing is swish. Quite refreshing to see for the car industry.

  • -4

VWs on the list is probably their closest competitor.

  • I think its highly likely they will pull out various technicalities to avoid paying out on the $200.

This does not make a lot of sense as it incentivises you to test drive their vehicle but purchase a competitor instead. Yes it gets people into the dealership, but psychologically the person will focus on finding faults during the test drive to convince themselves that buying a competitor vehicle is the better option.

    • The T&C's seem pretty straightforward to me. Only annoying thing is having to get it done by the dealer rather than doing it through MG themselves.

    • Not really, it's not difficult to save $200 on the new car. Customer goes there, test drives and likes it and realises it's ~$5k less than the competition, salesperson asks them why they'd care about the $200 when they're saving $5k.

  • Emailed them asking a clarification to the T&C’s and no response. Keep up the good work, MG.

    • +1

I think the kind of people who read T&C's are not their target audience :)

This is aimed at people who are done for the moment they enter a showroom, and who would never make it to that competitor's dealership.

    • Just to give closure to the above statement, I never ended up getting a reply from MG despite two emails sent. Form your own conclusions as to how they would treat you (if you bought from them) if they treat a prospective customer like this.
