Things to Buy That Last a Lifetime

Hi guys.

I'm interested to know what things you have bought or are available to buy where you pay a premium but can be sure there is a very high chance they will last you a lifetime. Can you name some products that come with a lifetime guarantee? Obviously not junk you would buy from the reject shop. Cheers.

          • @mubd1234: There is nothing wrong with MDF as a material. Officeworks has sold heavy duty MDF desks. Ikea optimises for both cost and weight, not durability.

I agree with others on good solid wooden furniture and good solid stainless steel cutlery. A lot of it comes down to treating things well, also.

I have a wallet from saddleback leather and just gets nicer with time, only problem is after 15 years I have given up on wallets.

A nice leather belt on my dad's belt buckle I wear Daily is still going strong after 15 years also.

Experiences. Memories last a lifetime, at least until dementia sets in. I would highly recommend a wildlife safari.

  • debt…debt lasts a lifetime and you can buy it right here=> personloans.com.au

Nothing wrong with The Reject Shop, I've always found a bargain.

    • +1

Why would u even imply there's something wrong! I've found some great bargains in their clearance section

      • As per OP " Obviously not junk you would buy from the reject shop."

        • Well then! I stand corrected.

        • +2

I actually bought a granite mortar and pestle from the Reject shop. That will last a lifetime

    MADE IN CHINA

    • +22

And with these 3….MADE IN JAPAN 😁

      • Depends what you are buying I guess. Japanese cars are pretty well known as the most reliable in the world.

        • What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.

        • They were. I'm a Japanese car fanboi but even I acknowledge that latest reports show Kia / Hyundai beating them.

      • +2

Japanese quality is top notch. My Tiger Rice cooker has lasted me for 15 years.

      • absolutely. fridge and some sony vaio and scope/camera accessories.

    • China easily last a lifetime.
Yes, even made in China ones ;)

    Bikes that are well-maintained

    • +4

      Thought you said bikies!

    • +1

The frame maybe. Not the whole bike

  • The oldest items I still have are some clothes.

But they obviously wear and tear.

Other than that maybe a solid desk or solid bed frame made out of thick wood not those flimsy metal ones that bend if you sit on it the wrong way.

    Cast iron pan.

Good microwavable bowl and solid cutlery.

    Yeah sorry I don't know.

  • +4

    Uranium fuel rod..

    • I raise you an Inanimate Carbon Rod

Most audio stuff (the good brands anyway) last forever. My Quad L speakers and vintage headphones are still working perfect to this date.

    • Good stuff holds it’s value too even when damaged as I found out

      • Agreed. I put up a damaged Cyrus amp for sale and the number of enquiries I got is insane.

    • Cones rot unfortunately.

    • Bose speakers I was going to say.

  • +14

    Crumpler bag

    • My Crumpler still going strong after a decade. Although sitting in the cupboard now. Might go up on ebay :(

  • +5

Le Creuset cookwear as long as you follow their instructions for cooking/cleaning their items. They are expensive but last forever.

  • +2

An early Land Rover… With a lifetime supply of parts 😁

  • +4

Just remember that a "lifetime" for products is only 25 years. And most companies offering lifetime guarantees will have become phoenix companies 5 times over in the same period :D

  • Trench coat
    Toyota Corolla, Camry
    Honda Civic, CRV

  • +29

    Winrar

    • +32

I'm still trialling it, still not sure if it'll be useful

      • +9

Try 7zip, unzips everything and is free.

  • +9

National brand (Panasonic) rice cooker, 30 years still going.

  • +5

Weber kettle. It's not really like it's going to be superseded

Literally every OzB purchase that were boxed after unboxing!

  • +1

all the "buy now question later items" you buy on OzB and still in its original packaging

  • Manual espresso machine!

    • Mine melted into itself but you are right if you get proper one!

      • What have, or did you have! Got a second hand ROK but looking at one of the Cafelat Robots now

    • I don't know about that. I have a Giotto machine and the market used price is less than what I paid for it. Maybe a Slayer machine but no owner will want to sell theirs.

      • +3

If you maintain a Giotto, it'll last a lifetime, with the occasional replacement of parts.

Don't see why a dropping second-hand market price indicates it won't be a lifetime machine. I've worked on a Giotto that was manufactured in 1998 and just needed a minor tune up to keep brewing nicely.

        • I stand corrected. I was indeed looking from the perspective of holding value, not considering the fact the Giotto will last a long time. I have had mine for 11 years now. Regularly serviced and cleaned, it never disappoints.

  • LASIK

    • +2

I thought it only last 10 years?

      • +1

It's a common misconception. The results last a lifetime but our eyes are also continuously getting worse as we age irrespective of LASIK, especially if really young or old. Hence why some people with glasses continuously need thicker lens in their glasses as the years go on. LASIK does not prevent this natural worsening.

Your eyesight may or may not be as good as when in you first got LASIK in 10 years time, but it'll definitely still be better than had you not had LASIK (assuming nothing went wrong of coarse).

      • I had lasik 10 years ago and my eyes are still 20/15

Maybe I need to wait until 11

        • What was your vision before laser? 20/15 is far better than average.

          • @Yawhae: Not too sure, but my contact lenses were -3.00 and -2.75

Yes apparently it’s common to get better than average eye sight after the procedure

    • +2

i got lasik 3 years ago, i ordered glasses yesterday :(

(i needed glasses/contacts for distance, now i need them for reading/computer screens)

    • in the aftermath probably the best thing I cancelled just before surgery.

Most high end swiss watches last a very long time. Eg: Plenty of 1960's Omega working to this day.

Old school metal desk fans from the 70's & 80's that were in your childhood photos and still on your parents desk.

    Nintendo gameboy

    • +4

An automatic watch that never needs servicing?
The service costs you could buy a new Seiko each time.
