Things to Buy That Last a Lifetime

Hi guys.

I'm interested to know what things you have bought or are available to buy where you pay a premium but can be sure there is a very high chance they will last you a lifetime. Can you name some products that come with a lifetime guarantee? Obviously not junk you would buy from the reject shop. Cheers.

Stanley Vacuum Bottle. Will last forever.

  • +24

    Eneloops

    • +24

More like take forever to arrive if you got on that camerahouse deal.

      • Yep… I bought some other sound equipment from there. 1 month down the line and I haven't heard anything.

    • +3

100%. Brand new and unopened too!

    • +3

Still had my first Eneloop bought back in 2008, working perfectly fine lol

    • I hope your lifetime will outlast an eneloop battery

      God bless.

    Cast iron pan

    • -5

      Someone here plays PubG

      • +9

        Or cooks?

        • +3

          Or L4D2?

        • I think they were trying to make a joke. Obviously a pans primary use isn't to hit people.

      • -1

What's up with the negs fellas!

    • -3

I've since read that cast iron does not cook evenly as I once believed, and is not so good for cooking steak, etc. as a more even heat distribution aluminium or steel pan

the woman like the enamelled cast iron casserole dish despite being almost too heavy for her to lift - maybe it retains the heat longer or something

      • +8

it just means you need to leave it to preheat a little longer till the whole pan is the same heat.

At that point it has a heap of thermal mass and perfect for searing steak

Honda lawnmower, inherited my uncles which was bought in 1988 still runs like new

    • +9

Briggs and Stratton motors are damn good too. I have an edger that was my grandfather’s. I think it’s from the 60s.

      • +1

Agree with Briggs and Stratton engine comment. I got some cheap lawn mower but made sure it had a Briggs and stratton engine. 10 years later, no service and it still starts first time and pushes through thick grass easily. The handle and rest of lawn mower is a bit meh. But can't fault the engine.

        • I did the same with a mower from Masters. Still going strong after 8 years.

    • Yep - got one from about 1991. First pull every time!

    • +1

      Mmm Hondas in general? :D

  • +71

    Pacemaker
    Coronary stent
    Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

    • +2

      That's cheating

    • +23

Pacemakers generally don't last a lifetime - generally around 7 to 8 years.

      • +11

        Lifetime of the person.

        • +10

Still wrong. Need to replace the pulse generator every 7-8 years. Leads can stay in longer though. Same with ICD, except they generally only last 4-5 years. Heaps of people who have had multiple changes of the Pacemaker or ICD box.

How do they know that's the only diet in the world that can mechanistically reverse heart disease? Did they test all if the diets? What about other impacts of the diet on health?

      • Yawn

    • +14

Lol! That's what they want you to believe :P

    • +24

That's only until they get pr.

      • +1

No need, an avo will guarantee a desirable outcome

    • +7

Yea the divorce settlement will last forever

    • +4

      Whose lifetime?

    • +7

Make sure they poke holes in the sides for ventilation. TRUST ME

    • mines still around 26 years later. I have tried bloody hard to get her to run away, but…

  • +10

An auto winding watch from a reputable brand.

    • +22

Yeah nah, I got a seiko 25 years ago which cots about a grand back then and it only keeps going if you spend a couple of hundred bucks a year to get it serviced.

      • +6

I was floored when I first saw the price that they charge for maintenance on mechanical watches but after looking into them more am absolutely astounded at the engineering so can sort of understand.

      • You bought the wrong one then. I managed to recently lose my 18 year old Seiko Arctura Kinetic Chronograph and was flawless from the day I bought it. It was $1200.

        • +2

A kinetic is not really self winding, it's a self charging quartz. Solar is a better system for self charging though.

          • +1

@macrocephalic: I agree however don't think there were any solar back then (that I noticed anyway). Kinetic is heavy but if you wear it, it just works.

          • +2

@macrocephalic: I've had a Citizen Eco Drive watch since 2015 and it has never skipped a beat. I had to replace the little pin that connects the wristband to the watch when that broke once, but the watch itself hasn't had a single issue in 15+ years.

            • +13

@AngusD: Damn… this guys living in 2030 or something.

              • +2

@hypie: I couldn't tell if it was a joke about how it was keeping time or a glaring error.

              • @hypie: he goes to lots of parties - and ages rapidly …

              • @hypie: Errr… yeah… that was supposed to be 2005 :D

            • @AngusD: or not in 5 years at least? ;-)

I'm wearing one of the same watches and am very happy with it. Bought mine in 2013.

          • @macrocephalic: Of course a kinetic is self winding. It’s got a counterweight that spins to charge the capacitor/battery.

You could argue that it’s not mechanical, but it 100% self winds.

      • +5

That's definitely not normal. With modern lubricants a mechanical watch should be able to go unserviced for as long as a decade.

        • +3

My first watch was a 19 jewel Sekonda made in the USSR. I bought it with pocket money about 1965, it was probably about five pounds, the Russians wanted western money then.
It's never been serviced, it has been filled with condensation many times, and it still runs perfectly (when I can be bothered to wind it up). I still wear it occasionally, though it's got a new strap.

          • @kmwa: ar - my old axe has lasted forever !

I've only changed the handle 5 times, and the head 3 times …

      • Service once every 3 years is fine unless you find it running late or fast. Synthetic oils in sealed watches last a very long time.

        • I have an old maurice lacroix automativ Watch i think from 09 or 10. Standsrd date time model. Nothing too fancy. Do you need to service automatics regularly? Havent got a clue if it's needed and how much…. or how often to do it? It runs obviously on kinetics and being sealed ive never had it opened so it should maintain pressure.

Also have your standard 200 -300 quartz manuals. tissot. seiko. dress watches etc. Any point of servicing those?

    • +1

      Nope.
Unless you pay a fortune for servicing every now and then.

      • +1

BIFL doesn't = no need to maintain or service.

    • my bro inherited my dad's seiko automatic from 1960s. JDM model bought when he was there on business. Did a full service 7 years ago and still running like new today.

    • Had a mechanical oris that was great until it got to the 10 year mark and needed a $300 service, baulked at the price and got a quartz tag heuer.

Waiting till I save up $8k for a rolex subby then I can go back down the rabbit hole. But hey you have a rolex

      • Keep saving, they're now $11k minimum and impossible to buy at retail.

    • +3

I'vce got a 36 year old rolex that has been serviced once. Works a treat. I have another one thats around 20 years old. It's still working perfectly.

  • +7

    A coffin?

    • +3

      Maybe an afterlife-time?

  • +20

    Tattoos

    • +3

Remember John Finley's "privately owned by Joe Exotic" tattoo? It's not there anymore …

A good multi-tool. Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, Leatherman, etc.

North Face backpack which I've been dailying for several years, still looks brand new.

Should check out /buyitforlife on Reddit. That'll give you plenty of ideas.

    • +8

I got a leatherman a few years back because I had a gift card to use at a store I never shopped at. One of my best purchases, I had no idea how often it would come in handy! Saves me from busting out the tool box for basic jobs all the time.

    • Yeah I still have the VSAK my grandmother gave me for my 9th birthday. The pen doesn't work any more though.

      • I've got one with a pen as well. It's replaceable.

    • +1

Got a leatherman from my boss for work, the best thing anyone has ever gotten me hands down. and the last time i had an issue to send off for repairs, they just sent me a newer replacement. awesome stuff.

      • +3

Yep they stand by there products alright about 6 years ago the cutters chipped, no receipt, because it was the older model i they couldn’t be repaired so they sent me out the newer model,I was wrapped and will support this company again.

        • +9

          I was wrapped

          I was rapt

        • I've got Victorinox kitchen knives in the drawer that have lasted 30 years

mind you - I've hardly used them - but they've never chipped !

    • +1

I agree Northface backpacks are crazy good quality. Crumpler is not far behind!

      • I found a Northface Recon for USD45 a few years ago whilst I was at TJ MAXX in the US, same thing retails for $200 here. Best backpack I've ever had.

      • I have a Blackwolf 30l day pack that is used everyday for work for the past 7 years, the best bag I've ever bought.

      • LL Bean backpacks are superb too though all these brands are super expensive here. They can be super cheap in clearance sale in the US stores.

      • +1

        Osprey packs. Lifetime warranty.

  • +9

    Parachute

    • +41

The cheaper it is, the more likely it is to last a lifetime :P

      • +3

        Had to think about that.

        Good

  • +47

    MS Paint.
