Things to Buy That Last a Lifetime

Hi guys.

I'm interested to know what things you have bought or are available to buy where you pay a premium but can be sure there is a very high chance they will last you a lifetime. Can you name some products that come with a lifetime guarantee? Obviously not junk you would buy from the reject shop. Cheers.

  • WinRAR.

    Except not bought…

  • I'm not sure about a lifetime, but a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus calculator will take all household calculating workflows and last for A VERY long time.

Very easy to find for under $80 near-new given how many students need them for school and barely touch them before dropping out of maths/finish elective.

  • Started to pick up quality hand tools Klein - knipex pliers and wrenches / Wiha drivers / Wera mini tool kits.
Expect them to last a lifetime. Maybe pass them down to my kids when they need to open that tin of milo.

    the wife

This is statistically correct. It's more likely a wife will last a husbands life time than vice versa.

In 2018 the average life expectancy was 80.7 for males and 84.7 for women. That coupled with men having a higher mortality rate really means that in any given relationships the man is going to likely to die first.

  • Can you name some products that come with a lifetime guarantee?

I just replaced a 2yr old Trojan gardening hand-fork I had snapped. I noticed all their products say "Lifetime guarantee".

I mean there is potential for hassle cos they keep cycling the products ever so slightly, but luckily the guy at Bunnings seemed pretty chill and just put it through when his manager (or whoever) didn't pick up the phone to confirm.

Keeping all my Trojan tool receipts handy now!

    • Serious question… do you need the receipt? Could you not return the item to the manufacturer without receipt given it is lifetime warranty?

Even if acquired 2nd hand the warranty should be transferable (like a car’s warranty) and thus shouldn’t you be able to claim without a receipt?

      • At first I had to send the Trojan rep a photo of the item and receipt. A little annoying since he then said I could just take it to Bunnings anyway, but then had to rely on the guy realising the issue of trying to get a replacement on something that (technically) no longer exists.

Not sure I would've gotten far without the receipt, but getting handballed off to Bunnings where someone then has to call up an override is not a good sign.

        • Thanks @dufflover that’s interesting to hear.

I often wonder how useful long term /lifetime warranties are as if they require proof of purchase it seems like they are trying to restrict ppls ability to claim (unless your want/ have a house full of readily searchable receipts)

I reckon if the product is with the warranty time frame and has been only manufactured for a time span of less than that warranty you shouldn’t need a receipt (ie if you bought a model xyz widget with 10yr warranty and the company only commenced making the product 6yrs ago- you shouldn’t need a receipt at all)

          • @parsimonious one: Well all they did was Malibu-Stacied up my garden fork - change the handle colouring/shape and no longer colour the blade matte black …

I think you'd have to be like IKEA where reputation is a big part of success to almost freely give out any sort of compo (e.g. store credit) for a receiptless-return. I've observed Bunnings do it once or twice but wouldn't work for me cos I picked up the Trojan fork orginally "dirt" :P cheap clearance price.
From a business point of view it just costs money to offer it otherwise.

          • @parsimonious one: Bunnings emails receipts now.

Bible and Rare Earth Magnets? Maybe you should have included a good imagination as well.

      • Both can be bought on eBay and Amazon. Why do you think they're imaginary?

        • To be fair, the question states "where you pay a premium but can be sure there is a very high chance they will last you a lifetime"

For a bible (or any book tbh) to be accurate here, you'd have to suggest one where you'd pay a premium for a higher quality copy. Can you buy bibles made out of metal or stone? LOL

          • +1

@mahdoo: Are you assuming you can't pay a premium for higher quality on eBay or Amazon?

To be fair, there are many centuries-old bibles with metal clasps on the covers or metal parts in the bindings. The original 10 commandments were etched in stone tablets, and yes, you can buy a modern version on eBay… https://www.ebay.com.au/i/382643656232

    crumpler suitcases/bags

i bought a suitcase years ago and it got an absolute flogging, the baggage carosel at sydney airport tore a zip off (just the little handle/toggle thingy, suitcase was still fine) so i dropped it off for the free repair and they actually told me they weren't happy with the stitching on the suitcase (there were a few frayed threads) so they gave me a voucher code and said "go into any crumpler store and pick out whatever you want as a replacement"

I try to buy from physical stores as if the tool breaks can walk in for a replacement. Hasn't happened yet

Cessna 172, the family station wagon of the sky. The average age of a registered 172 is between 30 and 40 years.

    • And to put that into perspective, an aircraft airframe is placed under different and most probably harder strain and conditions than the average station wagon… They are quality piece of tech.

  • Any leatherman multitool

Hammer, a set of hammer that you can pass down for generations to come.
A lot of metal handtools can last lifetime(s) if not abused and stored properly.

Stainless-wares like fork and spoon, reusability is infinite.

if you work from home - A herman miller chair, I love the Aeron.

    • I'm with Mahdoo… I was a bit tired of getting crappy cheapish office chairs that would be uncomfortable, start peeling and look bad with 12 months, so this chair fits the bill. I have the whole family including the drafting/stoll-style aeron, the normal aeron and the sliding chair aeron.

  • I’ve had an abu Garcia fishing rod and reel that have lasted about 25 years. (Though I did just upgrade the reel to a shimano Stradic which has 10yr warranty)

The Russian ones are a bit…..communist.

        • In theory, The communist one will last forever. The communism is a good idea will last for centuries recorded in "The Capital" of Karl Marks. There were no divorces in communist Russia. A divorce is labelled as antisoviet/ antiparty behaviour and one could lose communist membership for a divorce or not become a communist after one. Therefore there were no divorces in communist USSR. I see "communist wifes" these days in Asian cultures: Chinese, Japanese, communist means taking care of husband - a good feature of a communist wife. I'd say communist wife if you find one will last till the last day if you find one. Used to say a soviet woman would follow her husband into the fire and into the water.

          • +1

@compugrid: The Philippines is the only country in the world where divorce is still illegal. Not a communist country either.

Victa lawn mowers. My grandfather had a victa with a wind up starter (briggs and stratton engine) that he had for about 45-50 years and ran great. The only reason he got rid of it was because he moved, still worked and all. I have an old victa that looks like a piece of scrap metal, but starts first pull everytime.

    • I’ve not had a Alvey but I have heard elsewhere they can last for decades
