Suppose it goes to show the insane markup on some drivers housed in an enamel stickered wooden box.

    • Not sure if you are referring to the current or previous price here.

    • +3

It’s more the effort that goes into the acoustic design. The hundreds of hours taken to figure out the correct mix of material, porting, and baffles.

      • +1

Add a tonne of other things too, marketing etc etc

        • +1

Oh absolutely. I was just referring to the few fundamentals that differentiate speakers and “somewhat” justify the cost.

Your argument extends to a lot of consumer stuffs really.

Things that sits in the same boat:
      - sunglasses
      - bottled water
      - clothes
      - basically any other manufactured items you see in your house.

You did not account all the product engineering, design, testing and development.

Next time when you buy a pair of socks, just think, it’s just some wool someone just spun them into cotton and sewed it into a sock.

  • Has been this price for a long time.
Would the smsl ad18 be ok to drive this?

    • I've used it to drive the bookshelves, but on a desk…. Depends on your expectations. For normal listening volume yeah, for wake up the neighbours…. No.

      • Thanks. There's a good comparison of ls50 and q550 by Steve the audiophile on YT and q550 holds up well. Ls50 never seems to go on sale.
Have you heard the q350 or 150?

        • Yeah currently using the 150s as rears.

Had them on a desk previously too.

LS50s are far more demanding on amplifiers, though I've used them with the smsl and a TEAC desk DAC/Amp and there more then loud enough in close listening environments.

  • how's the performance of this speaker compared to other similar price speakers?
