Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 128GB $599 Upfront on Telstra $55/mth (after $10/mth credit) 80GB 12mth Plan (Port In or New) @ JB Hi-Fi

1850

My first deal, hopefully I have submitted this correctly..

I was instore today at JB-Hi-Fi and they have a new Telstra Mobile plan for port-in and new customers.

$65/pm ($55 after $10/pm credit) 80GB data per month on 12 month plan with Samsung S20 Plus mobile for $599 upfront.

The plan runs until the 24th of June BUT the $10/pm credit finishes close of business on 14th June, so very little time. I saw a banner advertising this deal on their website under the mobile phone category but it does not mention the $10 credit which I saw once in store on their advertising material.

Sadly au Samsung doesn't come with Snapdragon

    • +20

Who cares? You might notice it in some edge cases but mine is lightening fast.

This is an even better deal than the Samsung EPP deal. Both this and the Oppo Find X2 deals are amazing.

      • +19

every single Samsung post has this snapdragon comment.

        • +15

Yeah because it's bullshit we pay more for an inferior processor. Its not just performance, it's battery life too. Up to 20% worse.

And in regards to performance, it matters with high refresh screens when you're playing games and not getting the frame rates.

      • I was also lookin at the EPP store over the last couple of weeks and was annoyed when they recently increased prices. This JB-Hi-Fi deal worked out cheaper than EPP, even when taking into account the $50 newsletter discount (I also used discounted giftcards for my purchase)

    • +2

Get an OPPO Find X2 Pro for $799 then. It has SD.

    • +3

True… I rather buy the Korean version. Samsung thinks we're all suckers… They're right it seems.

Hotter, slower and less battery life

  • 5g or 4g version?

  • Dual SIM?

    • It has e-sim and a micro sim card slot, plus another microSD card slot (not sure if you can put a sim in the microSD slot however)

      • +3

        Its esim + nano sim.
Cannot stick 2x simcard into it.

Technically its dual sim, but you will need to change one sim into Esim by calling your telco.

If I use this feature I'd convert my usual sim to esim then when travelling stick in my travel sim.

        • correct yes, nano sim

        • Im pretty newb for this esim, what is it for?

          • +1

@countmein: e-sim can be used instead of a physical sim card, it is simply a digital copy of a sim stored on your phone instead of using up the sim card tray. Telstra supports e-sim and I got mine in JB Hi-Fi when signing up instore, just needed to scan a QR code with my phone to load it up in settings

            • @running on empty: Oh cool thanks. I thought thats for apple or smartwatch thing. I assume its for voice and data.
Can i convert my number back to physical sim in future?

            • @running on empty: Is the esim stuck on one device, can you swap it easily to another device. Can the same esim be on at same time on 2 devices

              • @jes: I believe it's stuck on the device and can't eaily be moved between devices, I mean I'm sure it's possible if you speak to Telstra but it's not going to be as easy as moving a physical sim card between phones.

              • +3

                @jes:

Is the esim stuck on one device, can you swap it easily to another device. Can the same esim be on at same time on 2 devices

Telstra's implementation is really dumb. To get an eSIM, you have to go to a store and get a physical card with a QR code printed on it. If you want to use your SIM in a different phone, you have to once again go to a store, get another physical card, and get the store to perform a SIM swap on their system. That defeats the purpose of an eSIM being digital, while at the same time being less convenient than a physical SIM.

If you reset your phone and forget to ensure the option to backup your eSIM is selected, you will lose your SIM and once again have to go to a store to get another physical card.

The only advantage is being able to use a second SIM in your phone's SIM slot while your main SIM is an eSIM, assuming your phone supports DSDS.

Vodafone emails you the QR code and you can activate online, like what you'd expect from a digital SIM.

                • @eug: Do you think you could rescan the original QR code in the event of a factory reset to load the eSIM onto the same phone?

                  • @running on empty: No, the original QR code can only be used once.
                    Telstra eSIM FAQ

Can I reuse a QR code once it has been scanned?
Once your QR code has been scanned, your eSIM is downloaded to your device. After that, the QR code will no longer be valid.

  • +1

It is only for Port in and NOT for new customers. So you have to either port in or buy a new $2 sim a d activate it and then port in to Telstra.

    • Terms in store state "Serivce must be new or porting from another carrier"

  • +2

There is a $400 gift card for the same plan. So the value of the S20+ is $999

    • Good point. I was wondering about this

    • The $400 giftcard is a different offer but also on the $65 plan ($55 after monthly credit) so it's either the s20+ for $599 or $400 giftcard. The instore price for the s20+ is $1299 so it's a bigger discount.

      • +1

that was what I meant. either of the plans. 599 + 400. that was how I came up with the value of $999

  • I'm currently on Telsta, if I were to get a new number on this, would I be able to change my number to my current number some way down the line?

    • +1

You will have to cancel your number so that it’s available and then you can change new number back to old one. But these days Telstra chat and call centers are almost not functioning so it is almost next to impossible to get in touch with them for doing anything.

      • Do you know how people go about cancelling it right after port in these days?

    • +1

Stop. Do not cancel your current plan that advice is wrong!

If you cancel it will put your number in quarantine. Ask them to change the number and cancel that plan all at once to avoid quarantine of 30 days.

      • Thanks - I've actually got a neighbour who works at a Telstra store, I'll word her up and she will know the best way to do it.

        • +1

I've done what your asking and did that cancel first way. The online chat took 2 days to get my number back from quarintine ;) do it in 1 go.

      • Hi, wondering if you can help please?
I signed up for a new number today, how do i go about to move my boost prepaid number to this new telstra account/number?

        • Hmm I'm not 100% because your not telstra with your number but just ring and talk to them. Telstra will know.

        • How did u go with this?

        So why no s19?

        • +2

because they didn't change their series naming in 2019.

        • +2

          Bad association with COVID-19

          • +2

@coxymla: but noone knew about covid19 till 2020.
            i smell a coverup

  • -3

I ported in to Telstra just over a month ago…(have applied for covid $10 discount) can i get the port in discount too? Or too late for that?

    • +1

I ported into a JB Hi-Fi P30 deal about a month or so ago.
I tried the online chat almost immediately but was only offered a once off $10 discount.
I tried again only last week and was given the $10 discount for 6 months. Was happy enough with that.

  • -6

If we took the $400 gift card offer do you think they would be able to match the phone deal with the gift card? (further reduce the phone price after the 400)

    • That's a No I believe.

Either get a $400 gift card

      Or get a S20 by paying $599.

      • -1

Fair enough; thought it could be an extension of the gift card deal with further discounting on the phone.

    • +1

When I purchased this in-store today they created a giftcard for $700 which was used at the front counter to reduce the price of the s20+ from $1299 to $599. I don't believe the giftcard could be used for anything else and was never personally given the giftcard, so I'm guessing it can only be used for this advertised deal. You can always ask the store (worst thing they will say is no)

    • So you're basically wondering if they would price match themself?…. Sure thing

  • +1

How Much could You sell the phone for ?

    • I sold 2 for $1100ea on facebook

      • +1

You cancel the plan on day 1 and total payout would be $990

        • yeah but people can buy the phone cheaper than that from Samsung EPP quite often. so depends on the markets appetite for paying a bit more

          • +2

@SgtBatten: No it's not, not the S20 plus.

            • @aligind4h0us3: S20+ 5g was $1045 last week, S20+ 4g was ever cheaper around $900 . How can you even sell them at $1100 when they are brand new with receipt for around $1200 in any retail store

    • I sold mine for $1050 yesterday if that helps

  • +1

Is this only for the plus? Do you know how much the regular S20 is instore?

    • deal was only for the s20+ as advertised, looks like the s20 is $1149 (on website)

  • Is this a correct deal, or is it meant to be S10?
    S20+ 128Gb shows as $1299 on JB-HiFi website e.g. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-galaxy-s20-128gb-… which after $400 credit would be $899

    • +1

In store offer can be different or better

    • +1

when I purchased this from the advertised deal today, they discounted the phone price by $700

  • Good deal for a S20+. Wish my S10e would die so I could get one.

I'm assuming the $390 ETC still applies bringing the total cost of phone to $989?

    • After signing up to this deal today I can confirm a $390 ETC

      • Did you sign up for this deal today and Cancelled it today itself by paying $390 ETC?

  • +1

Thx op im buying one tmrw

    • I was asked what colour I wanted so I guess you can choose any available colour

    • buy a sim from a different telco, like Aldi, and then port the number to Telstra in a JB store. Get your phone then cancel the plan and pay $390 etc.

  • +1

guys can you please explain to me that how you get 10 dollars of per month? I recently got the deal and bought an iPhone XS Max and Telstra 65/month plan. I contacted customer service many times and they say there is no such a discount. what do you say when you get it? I have been seeing here for ages now but never understood how it applies. thank you

    • +1

If it is like the last JB deal posted here, it should be applied in store when you port in your number.

The $10 off you are referring to is $10 port in credit and I don't think they are doing that anymore. The $10 new customer credit offer has also been discontinued.

    • +1

It's not something additional you ask for, it's part of the plan. It is automatically added

    • The deal is still on (will finish on 13th)

  • Can I port in from another mobile provider that uses the Telsta network? eg. Boost

    • +1

Existing Telstra, Boost and Belong services are not eligble but other Telstra providers are ok

      • bugger thanks for the response

  • How does this work? Do you get a gift voucher - how does the tansaction work?

    • For this deal you sign up for the plan for 12 mths, pay $599 cash in store (I used discounted giftcards that I already had) and walk out with the phone in hand.

      • Would I be able to put my Telstra sim into it once I leave and cancel my old plan so I can keep my Telstra number? Sorry newb here thanks

  • I got this exact same deal at JB in April; $599 for the s20+ however I'm on a $65 pm for 12 months 60gb with Telstra.

This is a much better deal than the one I signed up to, you save $120 ($10 monthly discount) over 12 months + additional 20gb.

I'd get on it if I were looking for a phone.

I might get my Mrs on it, she's with Telstra now this month is her last month of her 12 months.
I might port her out to Optus (or something cheaper) and then port back into Telstra the next day on this promo.

    • +5

I think you need to be ported out of Telstra for at least 1 month before you can be eligible for offers to port back in

    • -1

Can you Port in and out in a day and would that Work? Really keen to find out

    • I got that deal too but only on the 20th of May. I can't work out if i am annoyed or not.

  • I'm on telstra, what's the best option to port out an in ?

    • +1

If you want to use the same number then you will not be able to get this deal, you need to port out to another provider (that is not Boost or Belong) for at least 30 days. You will be able to take advantage of any deakl that comes along after 30 days however.

  • -2

Is it just the S20 Plus 4G available to purchase by signing up or you can get other S20 range as well like last April 2020? You can get the S20 plus 512gb 5G for $849 2 months ago.

  • -1

so it is $599 upfront + $55*12= 660 599+660=$1259 not think it is a good deal for 4g phone??

    • +2

That's $1259 for the phone and 12 months of phone plan with unlimited calls texts and 80gb data per month, how is that not a good deal?

    • +1

Or break contract on day 1 and its $990 as previously mentioned.

    • Early Termination is calculated as (plan charge * remaining duration) divided by 2 —- depending on your type of contract. so read it before getting one.

      so in this case:

      $55*12= 660/2 = $330

total at day 1 cancellation is 599+330= $929

  • is P30 part of the $0 deal?

  • S20 Ultra offer? No?

  • Confuseddddd!!!!
    S20+ 4g 128gb or Oppo X2 Find Pro 5g 512gb for $200 extra.
Never owned an oppo. Infact never thought they would launch a flagship killer phone like the X2 find.

    • Yeah I'm a bit in this same boat. Can either phone be expanded with SD cards?

      • Don't think X2 could, but S20+ definitely can.

      • +1

S20+ can be expanded to 1tb as @chernklai said. Which definitely is a plus. But X2 find is a future ready phone with 5g. And 512gb internal storage is plenty.
Other pluses with oppo is the camera and Snapdragon processor. Also the 65w charging which will come handy on more than a few occasions. So I am definitely leaning towards oppo.
One concern would be their service. Has anyone had experience with Oppo service centre?
