PSA: Allphones A70 eBay Plus Dishonest Practice

I thought I had done well. Set up my ebay plus, and got the phone before the 30 second mark.

Phone advertised as new, unopened.

Box was dinged. Had a fake secondary black multilingual antitamper sticker over the official white one concealing the damage they did originally entering the box.

The attempted deception was unmistakable though when it went straight into boot looping in the recovery mode menu.

Horrible.

I see now they have done bait and switch type things before, with like new stuff. But many good reports on new things.

Now it seems they have upped their scam games and given me a big hassle and time waste.

Wondering if anyone else went for the deal and has maybe been caught unaware by the scam (maybe allphones actually finished their reset before sending to you to make it more convincing?) hoping this makes those that haven't openned theirs yet take a closer look and evidence before going further.

In response to Mod: Allphones has enganged in dishonest practise by selling something as brand new unopened that knowingly or not wasn't such. They have followed up and clarified that it is factory resealed and updated and was OPENED to do this. If they want to be honest going forward they should have updated the ebay listing. However they have not and maintain this dishonest listing as still stating new and unopened sealed as one would find in a store/ This makes any other assertion here criminal in my opinion. I think this dishonest scheme should be labelled a scam. If they want another label for it I feel they should change their practice and not threaten ozbargain for censure.

Update: link to ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-A70-6-7-32MP-4500…

Clearly still tryin to pull off this deception on customers. They have even gone through the trouble to update the listing once, without fixing this. I can't help but feel this is them still attempting to perpetrate a fraud.

Mod: Removed libellous title.

*Self Edit: title and update. Please note mod I have used the caged legalese language you desire to assert opinions on this despicable display of behaviour.

    Hi all,
Sorry to see all your concerns, I want to assure you that we only stock official stock from Samsung Australia distributor. I have inspected the rest of the stock, I can also see the black sealed stickers, I can confirm that the stickers are officially done by an Samsung authorised agent. Through my investigation, I can confirm that this batch has been reflashed with the latest manufacturer firmware to optimize the performance, and that the phones have never been used or sold to any 3rd parties before it is shipped to you. If you are not satisfied with the condition, you are eligible to request an return under the eBay return policy. I hope this information will clear your concerns, if you have any other doubt or questions please feel free to contact me directly, including if you experience any warranty issues in the next 2 years.

Makes sense since it came with the latest security patch available for the model.

    • +7

Sorry lyl but I don't think that's OK. You should make it clear in the listing.
You need to specifically state on eBay, before people decide to buy, that the boxes have been opened and the phones re-flashed or else people will assume they are refurbished.
For example, many people may choose NOT to buy an opened box phone with a tampered seal. It would look pretty bad as a gift.
Personally I would not accept a phone sold as 'brand new' with an opened seal. People need to be able to decide for themselves with all the information.

      • At what point does a product stop being "new"?

Some manufacturers ship all their EU/AU products with UK style plugs, and when they arrive in Australia, the official distributor will open them up, and swap them out with AU plugs.

        • +5

Thats a good point Cronium but I think its important to say so before the sale is made.
So many refurb phones passed off as new on eBay.
A broken seal needs to be explained before, not after the sale

      • +2

I beg to differ that King Tightarse! Lyl is saying that if customers are not satisfied with the above explanation then they are eligible to return the item and get their money back.

Thanks Lyl for confirming, I will keep the phone.

        • +1

Customers can always do that on eBay.
Lyl's explanation is OK but personally I would like to know a phone has been opened before I bought it. A phone is factory sealed, or it is not.
If its not, then that point needs explaining before its sold, not after.

          • +1

            @King Tightarse:

Lyl's explanation is OK but personally I would like to know a phone has been opened before I bought it.

I can understand where you are coming from, I have discussed this with AllPhone store and the impression I got from them is that they did this investigation after receiving multiple messages asking if the stock is genuine. Only then they were able to verify and confirm with the authorised dealer that why there are two stickers on the box of A70 and many other models that they have existing stock of.

      • Unlike iphone, the original factory seal on android phones is the one thing that can prove the phone is indeed brand new. So I agree with King Tightarse, seller needs to specify if the box have been opened before for whatever reason.

I thought this kind of problem only exist on grey import phone.

    • Seems dodgy because people can easily update the firmware OTA as with any future updates

    • -1

Hi who's better Mobileciti or allphones?

      • They are both equally dodgy, and are well known for selling decoupled phones (i.e. phone decoupled from its SIM plan by them) as brand new, without so much as informing the customer of the consequences.

    • +3

Issue here: I checked with Samsung via IMEI. The one I got was manufactured in April 2020. It makes no sense that it was opened to put on a january/feb software update.

      • +1

I bet they were intended for another market or had some Telco branding.
Something dodgy has happened. There is no rational reason for Samsung to break open and re-flash near new phones just to do a simple software update

    • Hi all,
Thank you for your feedback and discussion in this thread, we have been monitoring it. The listing has been amended to add in a disclaimer regarding the condition.

  • -2

Hope they packed the box with popcorn!

  • Link to the deal?

  • +1

Does the IMEI on the phone match the one on the box?

    • +2

Sort of… Whiles there's a poorly printed large white label on outside of box that matches imei on phone and in phone. It's clear there is another sticker underneath this large white one as some of the printing can be seen through the large cheap one on top, but its impossible to tell further what the whole code says underneath.

  • Did you take a video on open box?

    • +1

Saddly no. The black Label was well applied to make it look like it was one with the white one sealing the box. If the phone hadn't been boot looping I wouldn't have taken a second look.

      • I can see another little QR code under my sticker with IMEI but that's about all. Phone boots ok, just had a look over it and it seems new, but I didn't have a real good look when I opened as I assumed brand new!

There is a black sticker over the white sticker to get into the box but it seems very well placed, I can't tell if one is original, or it's just part of the black sticker.

  • +1

Take it up with the consumer affairs in your state. If the scam is bad enough they will close them down.

  • Open a case with eBay 'Item not as described' and get a refund and you'll even get to keep the phone to use as a paperweight.

    • +3

You do not get a refund until you upload the return tracking number and prove delivery has been effected to the seller.

  • +1

If the seller requires the item back they have to supply an eBay return postage label and from experience the seller rarely bothers especially if they are already aware that the item has an issue.

They usually just give a refund.

  • Samsung probably reflash the firmware to remove telco branding

    • I would not have minded if they had advertised this.

The fact it was hidden and they have lied on their listing. Makes me think worse of what has actually happened here and their motives.

Samsung also did a !@#$ poor job reflashing mine for it to turn up locked in a boot loop until I factory reset it again.

  • I haven't opened the box yet but I have similar box (slightly damaged) and there is a black sticker on top of the white sticker. @OP have you contacted AllPhones yet? I am worried whether I should keep the phone or return it?

    • They made the same excuse as above. Same excuse that sounds inappropriate. Why would they need to open and reflash a phone manufactured in april 2020 (I confirmed IMEI with samsung) with a software patch from jan/feb 2020?

  • I also had the same question. It seems it's across the board, so I doubt Allphones is being deceptive. It's more likely Samsung or their distributor reworked the the box contents. I noticed that it includes a case which may not be in all markets, etc.

  • +2

Received and opened the A70, noticed a small scratch on the back panel and the a protective screen cover on the phone already???

  • Received. Same to op. Black label over white, white is cut. Seems to be a refurbished. What a scam

  • +1

I sent them enquiry an hour ago and got below reply:

Thank you for contacting and choosing Allphones!
According to your order record and the item we have sent out to you, I can definitely confirm the Samsung Galaxy A70 you have received is brand new condition with 24 months Samsung warranty AU wide.
In this case, are you able to gently open the item to check the accessories and mobile phone if there would be any issues?
Feel free to contact us if you have any issues.
    Kind regards

    Allphones Online(eBay)

    • +4

I notice they carefully say "brand new condition" not "your phone is brand new".

  • +3

This app has refurbishment check: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.…
My A70 seems to have passed as brand new.

  • +1

Clearly still tryin to pull off this deception on customers

That's why I stopped posting deals from allphones and mobileciti. I had enough personally.

  • +2

This sounds like a phone I bought from Kogan recently, with a secondary tamper sticker placed over a broken one.

In the case of Kogan, when I tried to register the warranty with Samsung Australia, it refused to let me do so, and it stated "Model entered is invalid. (Note. International models cannot be booked)". It did not take long to find out that it was New Zealand Vodafone-carrier stock, misleadingly advertised as "AU Model".

If I received one of these A70 phones, I would simply try to register the warranty with Samsung. That way, you will know if this is legit AU stock. If it rejects, you have proof it isn't; if it accepts, you have the ease of mind knowing you will have 2 years manufacturers warranty.

    • register the warranty with Samsung Australia, it ref

Is Warranty registering only to confirm the dates?
I found some electronics (like graphics cards, EVGA) was OK to claim within warranty even without receipt as they have some sort of record of purchse from merchants I presume?

      • +1

I don't believe it is absolutely necessary, but yes, I imagine it means they can use it to verify you are covered without the receipt. But mostly, I was interested to confirm that I did in fact have 2 year manufacturer warranty, which with Kogan turned out not to be the case.

        • -1

          Oh right
Which reminded me of another product we bought HyperX headphones with 2 year warranty, but nowhere to register on website, Warranty page just listed the periods of their products

  • +1

I managed to buy an A70 on that same deal… I received the phone, however, I had no boot looping issues - The phone also looked in brand new condition

  • +3

Fortunately I read this post before opening the package. Submitted a return request to avoid the risk. $299 for an open box as new A70 with 2yrs warranty is not a bad deal but the seller should have mentioned on their ad instead of rolling the dice. The best way to eliminate suspection is an email from Samsung AU confirming that this batch of A70 from eBay is still eligible for full local warranty and explaining why they were re-sealed with a second tape. Let's see how it goes.

  • Please Note: The device is still in a brand new condition which is manufacturer sealed. The manufacturer/local distributor may have repacked or reflashed the firmware to meet certain requirements.

    • -1

"manufacturer sealed" - BS, I think the "manufacturer" would be able to put it into an original packaging, not a seal over a seal :)

  • +1

I received mine from second deal last Friday.
Black Samsung (Looks genuine seal?) was placed on top of white seal. - Tempered
Phone did not have those thin plastic wrap with "Samsung Galaxy A70" logo with some features written.
Side stickers around the phone definitely had dust captured inside and also some dust on the back of the phone.
Firmware was on security patch of January 2020.

I messaged seller via eBay and received same copy and paste response.

    • +1

Hope you weren't expecting anything else after the PSA. It's annoying they just won't be upfront and honest about it as I think most people would still go for the deal, and the observants ones wouldn't get to this afterwards and feel so bad about it. The deal was still good enough that I kept it so I could leave negative feedback to help inform others. Did a clean download and reinstall for further piece of mind.

      • Exactly. I bought this after reading this forum, so at least I was aware of this by you. However I am totally with you that seller should have advised buyer that this was opened by Samsung to update software or whatever bullshit they mentioned.
I might keep this anyway, but it feels like I bought a second hand phone when something (Even though it is thin plastic cover) is actually missing in the box.

        • I am the same and not happy with the second-hand phone. Already requested refund and will return it. Also, I am 100% sure that the seller will repack the phone and sell it as ""brand new" again!
