note that you will have to remove the mask to be able to eat the rice.

      • +5

Why can't they make a hole around mouth area to make it easy to eat?

Is this website safe to start off with, the reason I ask is the extension of the website is .mp not .com or .net or .org

I am not a nerd but interested to know the difference between those extension for the websites.

I had this same issue - Find your closest store and put in the suburb name instead. The search seems to be based off the store name they had inputted into the bolded first line

    Cotton useless.

  • I would not use these: CDC only lowered their requirements to include cotton mask due to lack of medical mask:

    https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.responses#covid-…

    study: https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.short

tl;dr cloth absorbs moisture and has poor filtration

    • +7

There are studies that show the opposite though, and another study that was against cloth masks was retracted. So who the fk knows?

      • Any study proving cloth masks are effective had lack of data or testing. This study referenced that Cloth Masks are actually more harmful (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S246804272…).

        • +4

Did you link to the wrong paper?

I ask because this is the final paragraph of its conclusion:

In conclusion, our findings suggest that face mask use should be as nearly universal (i.e., nation-wide) as possible and implemented without delay, even if most masks are homemade and of relatively low quality. This measure could contribute greatly to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, with the benefit greatest in conjunction with other non-pharmaceutical interventions that reduce community transmission. Despite uncertainty, the potential for benefit, the lack of obvious harm, and the precautionary principle lead us to strongly recommend as close to universal (homemade, unless medical masks can be used without diverting healthcare supply) mask use by the general public as possible.

Or are you just arguing that mask wearing people should prefer more effective masks over less effective masks, if possible, in which case I don't think anyone would disagree.

    • +3

"healthy" what if your sick ?
$1 for a mask is very cheep, you might not need this but others may.

    • WHO would disagree

    • Do you have any kind of source to show that wearing a mask can cause harm from microorganisms?

Masks are recommended to reduce the amount of droplets that leave your mouth and enter from other people.

If you're sick, and your mask is contaminated, what exactly is going to change?
Are you suggesting that microorganisms are going to culture in your mask and infect you more than you already are?

      • +1

If you are sick - get tested, dont go out wearing a mask.

Makes sense in countries that dont have the ability to test like we have now.

If you arent sick then its ability to protect is less than a proper mask

      • +1

        Hi Antares,

The risk is more so around the resumable nature of the mask. More potential for contamination of the mask due to its reuse, and no moisture protection means it's certainly less effective at blocking droplets, but better than nothing.

You won't get more infected by any organisms you already have, but there's more potential for the mask to trap new pathogens, which then may infect you.

This is the first time Im seeing negative votes for a free item in OB..

    • Similar free masks have been on before and people negged saying it encourages people to go into the war zone to get it :)

    • This ain't nothing. Ben & Jerry's proved you can make people dislike you by giving them money.

  • I thought this was a shite deal when I got my business trousers altered earlier this week. Based on the upvotes, clearly wrong.

Under Australian governing bodies; not US's CDC which actually lowered their requirements…

    1. The NH&MRC Guidelines
    2. AS/NZS 4815/4187
    3. CDNA Guidelines
    4. The ADA's Guidelines for Infection Control

"Using a cloth (e.g. cotton or gauze) mask. These have poor filtration (no bacterial filtration or particle filtration), no splash protection and no resistance to fluids from the user coming through."

    • -1

      WHO (https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/documents/advice-on-…):
"Cloth (e.g. cotton or gauze) masks are not recommended under any circumstance."

      • +4

it's a little more complicated that that it seems. WHO has changed their guidance in the last couple of weeks. See their Q&A re: masks.

Non-medical, fabric masks are being used by many people in public areas, but there has been limited evidence on their effectiveness and WHO does not recommend their widespread use among the public for control of COVID-19. However, for areas of widespread transmission, with limited capacity for implementing control measures and especially in settings where physical distancing of at least 1 metre is not possible – such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments – WHO advises governments to encourage the general public to use non-medical fabric masks.

        • +1

fair enough ; some health bodies are back paddling due to lack of availability of medical mask given that cloth masks 'may' help prevent spread. But that doesn't make my comment irrelevant or redundant. The fact I'm being negged despite spewing facts show some people just want free masks regardless.

my comments aren't negging the store or their generosity to provide free goods, but in relations that cloth masks aren't all that effective, given that before covid-19 has been labelled as ineffective, but due to current circumstance been made "okay."

          • @kid-vhee: In my understanding there are two reasons for the change:
            (1) Research has shown that wearing any mask significantly reduces the incidence of catching colds/flu's, even if it isn't medical/P2/N95 grade. The mechanism isn't clear, but is likely due to a reduction hand to face contact
            (2) The other big benefit is if you are getting sick (not yet symptomatic, but contagious), having a mask can reduce how much you spread the disease, which has a measurable impact on transmission rates

Source: my obsession with medical podcasts. Happy to be corrected if anyone has an actual source.

  • Got one - thanks OP!

What’s worse than no protection? A false sense of security.

  • It's good they are giving one away free. If it's any good, I would be happy to buy.

  • Are people still freaking out over COVID that they need a mask that doesn't even work?

  • +1

It is better to get for the future when Oz Gov shifts into another panic mode of "2nd corona wave!!!" and they make masks mandatory or you get a $500 fine.

  • Man that mask aesthetic…..

    Love it.

  • Is this one of those FREE stuff that try to get your private details and spam you with 3rd party ads?

Seems like you need to give full name and phone number when placing order.

    • If you are so paranoid:
      a) Don't buy anything via their web site. Problem solved.
      or
      b) Use a disposable email address and a burner number/SIM.

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one.

    • Did you actually get it or still no order confirmation emails yet?

  • THE SUAY FACE MASK PATTERN

After testing everything from vacuum cleaning bags to commercial fabrics, Medoff, Pavlu, and Schempf discovered that stretchy blue shop towels made from polyester hydro-knit seemed to meet many of their criteria. It should be noted that this is not an FDA-approved N95 mask but is intended to be a better-fitting alternative to some of the other patterns for surgical masks circulating on the internet.

Maybe making these masks from polyester hydro knit will perform better than cotton - known for its comfort and breathability (if that's a word).

Best mask is KN95/N95 for air filtration, then civilian mask to prevent particle expulsion. This will do nothing, it's just a fashion item like a bandana.

    • nothing could protect you 100%
so out of 90% from VIRUS (not bacteria) filtering through the mask

      1. Cotton/Cloth mask - probably around 1%-5% (better than nothing at 0%)
      2. Dust / FAKE medical/surgical mask - probably around 10%-20%

      3. REAL Medical mask(those without factory sterilised) - probably around 40-45%

      4. REAL Surgical mask(the proper one with factory sterilised) - probably around 50%-55%

      5. n95 Dust grade mask - probably around 60-70%

      6. n95 Medical grade mask - probably around 80-90%

all these are estimation on breathing in/out air through open space/outdoor, we don't really need n95 for outdoor, just medical(real) or surgical mask is enough! Sadly a lot of people still wearing 1 & 2 and think that it's good for them.

but yeah….NO WAY I am gonna trust these Cotton mask!
luckily I've stocked up for all my family members!

ps. Medical/Surgical mask could wear up to 4hrs, n95 up to 8hrs, if it get wet then lost its purpose and should be disposed immediately + wear a new one. Also n95 needs "fit test", it's not for everyone!

  • +1

This type of mask will stop the wearer spraying droplets on other people when sneezing or coughing. It will also remind you not to touch your face. However even if the mask fits tightly to the face with no side gaps, cotton will not block viruses nor bacteria. In fact absorbent material over the mouth traps moisture where bacteria will multiply; wash mask daily.

  • Ordered one. Thanks OP.

      • Collected mine on the weekend.

  • not bad to use over the top of a P5 mask, makes wearing a mask a little more aesthetically pleasing, i wouldnt rely on a cotton mask alone to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Still a good gesture from looksmart

    Dear Valued Looksmart Customer,
Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing Face Mask order delays due to the unexpected large demand for the LOOKSMART Face mask. We are working around the clock and will email you once the Face Mask is ready for pick up at your selected store.

Got an email to pick up at Victoria Park. Went there but was told needed to have a printed copy of the order so they could mail it to head office. Was told an email was not sufficient and I would need to go to Officeworks if I didn’t have a printer. Told them not to worry, not worth the hassle. This deal was likely very popular based on the previous email so they probably making it hard to redeem.

  • SCAM ALERT! I got a confirmation and tried to collect twice and was told to come back in two days both times. When I rang to see when I could collect they hung up on me - Watergardens store!

  • +1

LOOKSMART seems pretty dodgy - their main head office number either rings out or hangs up on you. You cannot get through to any of the departments - marketing, Accounts etc. They all do the same hang up thing.

  • Has any one managed to pick one up yet?

    • Yes. I found them too big for my face. So, they have been cast aside as backup only.

  • Received an email to pick up mine on Monday July 20th despite placing the initial order before the end of June. My local Looksmart was temporarily closed, got options to go to 3 other Looksmart locations. Email clearly stated that I had to pick up within 7 days of receiving the email. Went to the Brandon Park VIC store today (Friday 24th) & showed my email to the person there. However, she said that the promotion was over eventhough I showed her on the email that I was still within 7 days and refused to give me a free one. Store attendant then attempted to sell me 1 for $14, but I told her it wasn't worth the hassle. Disappointed that they couldn't honour the email.

  • +1

I've been to 2 different stores and they both redirected me to go to another one

Forest Hill VIC said "we have lots of masks, but you are not a regular, so i'm not giving it to you"
Brandon Park VIC said "Our head office doesn't give me anything, so it's only my loss. Try going to (Looking at my email) points at Brandon Park store"
So I said, that's your store. She told me to go to another one one and clearly doesn't even know what she pointed at. I don't know how there's no negs on this deal.

    • For some reason I got it for free, they let me pickup

      • Which store?

        • Doncaster East, In the Pines shopping centre

          • @jayboi: Forest Hill said some bs, I never went to that store before and they gave it for free, they Just don't want to give it to you for free

      • Didn't this deal end at the end of June?
