    • Nope this is a decent upgrade. With FTTP you can pick just about any new router but router placement is key.

    • Really? I can get wifi from my single AC68U throughout the house and garage (which is a separate building out the back). It's a great router that I've had for years.

      • The RT-AC68U is a rock solid wifi router. The people that complain usually have the DSL version which is different.

    • +1

I've read (but don't have the source) that range performance on the 86U is better than 68U. But perhaps you might want to re-asses your current router's placement or signal band?

      • the 86 is the upgrade to the 68 so yes, more power, more range.

    • +1

I don't know about the DSL-AC68U specifically, but some of the DSL variants are supposedly not as reliable as their RT versions.

  • Gah! Dammit! I was literally just researching what router to get - added this to my short list. Then this deal appears like magic - alas, no stock.

    • Sorry mate I can't believe how fast it went after I ordered and posted this. Out of curiosity which other routers are you considering?

  • I currently use the stock NBN router/modem provided by Optus. If I'm not having any internet issues (i.e. dropouts), will buying a premium router/modem make any differences?

    • Possibly faster wifi performance and wifi range.

    RT-AX86U coming soon.. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Networking/Modems-&-Rout…

Going to pull the trigger on that to replace my RT-N66U, its served me well.

  • Amazing router, but I don't see a deal here. It's $139.99 (or AUD 204) on JoyBuy, when I bought mine two years ago.
It's free shipping, but taxed, so it comes to $153.99 (AUD 223) delivered.

Unfair to compare to 2 years ago from an overseas site (which I can't find stock on). Router prices have gone up due to COVID-19 so if you want a router currently be prepared to pay more. Also you won't get the AU plug when buying from the US, or more importantly Australian warranty.

      • I'm not comparing to 2 years ago. I paid more two years ago, this is the price right now: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/546102
You are probably right about the AU plug (I don't remember and can't check right now) but I don't think that's a big issue.

        • Fair enough, it's just how I read your comment. Thanks for the link.

      • Yeah, way overpriced for this, technology changes according to Moore law so shouldn't spend something that was cheaper 2 year ago.

      • I also got mine 2 years ago for < $200 from Amazon US - even with GST factored in, I am very surprised to see this price today. With Merlin firmware, Skynet and Diversion, it has been a solid and reliable piece of kit that was pretty much an install and forget network equipment. The NBN modem needs rebooting more frequently than this router.

If I upgrade this router, it has to have Wifi 6.

    • This was a good deal for AU stock and warranty. Everywhere else in AU is $359 or more.

I thought it was a playstation.

Great router, can handle the new 1000/50 plans no problem!

  • word of warning with the Asus modems with their parental controls and AIMesh etc.. its awesome software that comes with it, but once you activate those features your data is being sent off to Trend Micro = China.. oh no senpai!

    CHINA NUMBER 1

    • +1

You say that as if the Chinese, Russians and Americans don't already have all the information they need to oppress you.

  • Got mine from ebay about 2 weeks ago for $274 with Merlin installed….

    • Which seller did you buy from and how quick was the shipping?

  • 2014 RT-AC68U running asuswrt-merlin is still going strong, looking to upgrade but too late.

Sadface. Order got cancelled after all this time

    • I'm very disappointed. I don't know why Amazon/ASUS accepted the orders if they couldn't fulfill them - especially at EOFY. Now back to waiting for something decent to come up again. Maybe Black Friday will bring some sales.
