Great idea. Pretty good pub grub there too. How much does a name change cost?

  • +26

    Good cause.
    Absolutely terrific job he's doing

      • +15

        Wrong!

          • +2

@barozgain: Don't have the energy to debate, but all I'll say is that these guys have it tough, and it's quite easy to stuff up in their roles. The fact that he hasn't yet, when the others have somehow managed to, makes him stand out.

Sometimes that's all we need, the Premiers to do their jobs. I'm based in Sydney so I can't say the same for our Premier. So let's appreciate the little things they do, rather than joining the crowd and bagging every single politician for every single thing they do. They're humans too.

Also, I hope your name is Mark and that you can go enjoy your free meal with a mate.

Someone from NSW wants to critique how WA has handled things… cough cruise liners….

        • In fact I'm a WA resident(couldn't edit account):

I can see the WA economy was heading towards bad recession well before COVID due to bad economic decisions by current WA government

Hence why I'm not a fan of Mark

          • +2

@barozgain: ""due to bad economic decisions ""

What? i thought we were very close to having a surplus and being in the green before all this stuff.

Wyatt and others [treasury] were forecasting a small surplus.

we were not heading to recession

It is documented [ check the facts] we were close to being in the green

@grog: Something as simple as housing: were hitting record lows for the past few years : https://thewest.com.au/business/housing-market/perth-propert…

From 2019 "WA's economy is still the second worst in the country" : https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/wa-s-e…

              • +3

@barozgain: No make lots of house,
no write lots of expensive mortgage,
                no get overcrowded fast enough

                no good economy!

              • +1

@barozgain: The WA economy was already on a downward spiral before he took over from Emperor Colin who left little in the bank. With a lot of the major resource projects switching from construction to operations and low confidence in the housing market, those figures were always going to take a hit.

Just wondering what bad decisions you think he made that led to the decline in those figures?

              • @barozgain: How are property prices dropping a negative? The market was massively overinflated due to the mining construction boom. Anyone not involved in the industry got locked out.

If anyone is to blame it's successive state and federal LNP governments for not planning a transition post the construction boom despite the resource companies broadcasting their intentions. Anyone caught out simply wasn't paying enough attention to stock market releases.

              • @barozgain: But as @Grog said, the state government was doing well with one of the smallest budget deficits pre-covid.

Housing is largely a national issue, with tax breaks/benefits dealt with at a national level, yes there's stamp duty but the overarching direction comes from the federal tax system.

The mining boom was short lived and was a sugar hit for the western australian economy and housing market.

They are also our closest capital city to Asia.

        • I think Darwin would beg to differ. I know it's not much of a city but it's still a capital.

    • +2

Absolutely, won't take any risk. Bet the Vic's wish they had him

    • +3

      Well done Labor and Mark.

They don't have a Murdoch paper there so he had less toxicity from conservatives I imagine.

      • +4

Seven West Media and the local AM talkback are pretty bloody conservative. However, I think even most conservative outlets here are wary of too much criticism given the popularity of McGowen and the state government.

  • +8

Sounds like you have to buy a meal first to get the other free "…Just buy a meal, & we'll shout your mate Mark for free."

  • +3

Keeping the borders closed has sure made him popular in WA.

    • +3

Yep watching the East Coast fumble around has only strengthened support for him

    • +2

Think some in WA would like the boarders closed permanently :)

  • +2

    Rockingham FTW!!!!!

  • (profanity) need this in vic. Worth the drive over from melbourne for a road trip?

    • +34

No Vic cooties allowed in WA.

    • +5

      Get on the beers mate.

    • +3

Going by what's happening, anyone named Daniel might be asked to pay double.

      • +2

Or 10 times if you were named Gladys or Peter during the Ruby Princess debacle.

  • +11

Great to finally see WA get a premier who just does the biz for them and looks after the population and not just special groups.(Not being born in WA might be the reason he's been able to do the 'biz')

*Currently looking at a name change to Mark.

    Great OzB post this!

  • +1

Looks to also apply to the names Marc, Marcus and Marco.

  • +2

    Cool. But… Rockingham!

    • +5

I find Rockingham foreshore like freo 15 years ago. Great restaurants, good value and beach front.

      • +3

And just like Freo it's a long fricking way away

  • +4

This deal hits the mark, I just hope they don't mark their territory. I'll mark it down to visit this place in the future, though.

    • +1

The dad jokes are strong in this one.

  • +6

Mark apparently has said he is attending according to Nine News Perth Facebook page.

  • +1

Very clever marketing, good on them and all Marks, Marcs, Marcuses and Marcos

  • +3

McGowan is running against the trend and actually giving politicians a good name.
Plenty of room on the foreshore for a statue of the man who put citizens lives before profit.
    Mark my words …

  • Does Markarita count

  • +1

Meanwhile in VIC, we have a premier with a first name for a last name

  • Wonder if Marc would be accepted..

    • We're not too fussy so Marc, Marcus & Marco can come along too!

      • I'm clearly losing my mind. Guess that's lunch sorted on the weekend then!

  • -1

This is a good deal for Marks.
Pub steak in Perth = $30. Chips extra.
    1 small beer = $10.
    Cheers.

    • +3

You uh, been to Perth lately? Prices came way down along with the economy in 2015ish. I was shocked last time I was in Melbourne how expensive the beer was.

      • -2

Yep - spend some time there regularly. And lived there until I couldn't afford it any longer.
Dunno why the prices were ever so high.
        Perth prices - yeah nah.
Melbourne prices > Sydney. It's a premium product.

      • Not sure where you're drinking, but beer prices have only ever gone up in the last 10 years.

        • Been plenty of pubs offering cheap pints for years now. For a while The Vic in Subi was doing $3.50 Rogers.

    • +3

Don't know which pubs you were at. Never seen these prices, and I work central cbd

      • Naval Base, Henderson etc.
People with lots of spare cash.

    • +4

      Ahh
Not sure if you saw but 2018 saw the steak and pint wars which saw multiple pubs in subiaco and surrounds offering $5 steaks and $3.50 pints. It's not that cheap now but $15 for a pint and steak and chips is fairly common

      • +3

What a great war it was

      • I worked in Subi from 2016 until about a year ago. Good to go out for pub lunches.

  • +10

I am seeing mark as a next prime minister of WA

    • +2

He is already premier of WA

      • +10

I know but i believe in WAxit.

  • +3

Marks actually a pretty good fula I have met the man before. He took time out of his busy day to stop to chat to the me and the bros….. and at least he puts the people first before profits

  • +3

What if your called Mark and your sporting a mullet ?

    • 2 drinks coming your way!

  • +1

    oh hai mark

  • -5

I pity you sheep, Mcgowan is killing our economy and we are going to lose more people to poverty and suicide than Coronavirus. I feel for anyone running a tourism business. Mcgowan is a fool and it should be Mark pays double.

    • +2

The side effect in stopping (if it does stop) a pandemic, is that, yes, other causes of death will result in more death, comparatively.

    • +3

Yeh, keeping everything open is really working out for Trump and the economy…their healthcare industry is making record profits :)

  • +1

For those of us who this doesn't affect, I really feel like it's missing the Mark.

  • -1

I hope they are charging anyone named "Daniel" double though.

  • Damn, bit too far for a free meal.

  • This is some great MARKeting.

  • -3

    Typical greedy low info ozbs.
