MSI X470 Gaming Plus MAX for $169 (Preorder and in-store only) @ Centrecom

1120

Edit: EXPIRED. Now $189, still a solid price if you were looking something comparable to the Tomahawk MAX for less but not the deal it was.

Great deal on what is pretty much a Tomahawk MAX but on the X470 chipset which also has more USB ports and… just… ports in general. Good to see it at Centrecom with free shipping.

I also want to clear up some confusion on AMD's support for different CPUs and such:

  • Right now only MSI have confirmed support for Ryzen 4000 on both their MAX and non-MAX 400-series boards. I assume the non-MAX ones will possibly lose support for older architectures, or go back to the dark ages of text based BIOS. 😬

  • AMD's roadmap for socket AM4 ended on 2020. That's not to say that AM4 will definitely not support Ryzen 5000, but it most likely will not. It is however likely that the Ryzen 5000 APUs will still be on socket AM4, as the 3x00G CPUs are still on the Zen+ architecture.

  • Aaaand a new addition to this list. MSI's MAX series boards support Ryzen 3000 series CPUs out of the box, and this is no exception.

Basically, if you don't need PCIe 4.0 go for this board and you won't be disappointed. GPUs isn't really an argument for 4.0, see how PCIe 2.0 aged. SSD however is a valid argument though if that bandwidth is necessary for your work.

Edit: This also has 2x M.2 slots! But also no Type-C…

Thanks OP, great find. Bought 1 for future Ryzen 4000 upgrade :)

  • Oh man… Pulled the trigger on a $300 x570. This seems a lot better overall for my use case though

  • +1

This board is also missing the USB bios flashback without CPU..which the tomahawk and mortar boards have..

Means you will need a 2000/3000 series CPU to flahs up for 4xxx support if it ever arrives..

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d9_E3h8bLp-TXr-0zTJF…

For some reason the VRM support is NOT considered as good as the tomahawk and mortar as well.

    • As I said they have lots of contradicting information on different lists. Some will say it's better, others say it's worse, others say it's the same. I'm inclined to say they're as good as each other.

  • this is a good board, I paid $199 a few months ago. i wasn't worried about the future support as if i was to get a new CPU I'd be building a new PC anyway

Thanks OP, great buy, snagged one!

  • This one or the b450 gaming plus max? I'm not overclocking but rather underclocking.

    • Is the B450 cheaper and if so how much? If the difference is under $20 I'd say purchasing this over the B450 is justified. Also no red aesthetic on this one.

  • Was planning on getting the Asrock B450 Steel Legend. Should I get this? Will be using Ryzen 5 3600

    • +1

How much is the Steel Legend costing you? This is a better better board in almost every regard, apart from maybe the aesthetic but that's subjective and I think this one looks better.

Edit: I haven't compared I/O, it is possible that the Steel Legend has more or less or worse or better.

      • $189. Been waiting in stock for it and ETA keeps pushing back. Was also waiting for Asrock B450 Pro4 for $169.

Any idea with delivery time? Never bought from Centre Com Online and can't find it on website.

For gaming, music production as a hobby. Sorry, panicking if I should jump on this deal

Have no experience with Centrecom online, but in store they're great. I'd jump on this, never seen a price like it and I've heard good things about Centrecom.

          Edit:

We currently use the following service providers:

          Australia Post
          Star Track
          Star Track Express

They can't be that bad then… or can they?

          • +1

@Void: Thanks OP! I jumped on it! My order for the Asrock B450 Pro4 has been delayed for over a month now from PLE and ordered Steel legend as well hoping that I could get it sooner.

Both orders have been delayed further and was thinking, if I have been waiting that long, might as well get bang for the buck.

            • @azngamer: Yeah this is definitely a great deal. It seems Centrecom have a lot, I would've thought they'd all display "low stock" by now!

          • +2

@Void: I ordered something from them the other day and it came pretty damn quick via regular post interstate. Everything in the product seemed to be in order.

Also impulse-bought this board last night and its already bagged and tagged (shipped) - pretty good for a weekend :)

  • My GF's PC is bottlenecked by the CPU and there is no upgrade path for her socket-type; the GTX 1660 6GB caps out at about 15% on games like Modern Warfare.

If I was to get her this, could someone please recommend a good deal for a CPU?
(I will be researching CPUs in the meantime to educate myself)

The Ryzen 5 3600 goes for $275 often and this would be a good board for it. You've still got time to make up your mind, plenty of stock it seems as per the website.

Thanks for posting! Just picked one up. Now waiting for a 3700x - 3900x to pop up. Spewing I didn't pull the trigger on the last 3900x deal.

  • No more stock online unfortunately!

    • OzBargained!

      • Was looking at it a few hours ago, then just got asked to help build a PC for a friend and now its gone! Always have bad luck with these things!

        • Bummer. Your next best bet would be the Mortar MAX for $179 if you don't need all the PCIe slots, it still has dual M.2.

  • Can still buy online.. Pre-order ETA 1/7/20…

    • Noted! It said out of stock last I checked.

      • Although not sure it actually works…(trying to order now)..still says out of stock. Maybe I'll just call them tomorrow…

  • This board usually goes for $189.. Why is it cheaper than the tomahawk which is $215 at most stores it is meant to be the "budget" chipset?

    • +1

It's better in every way, except I keep being told "ThE VRmS ARe SLiGhtLy WoRse ThAn The TOMaHaWk". The 3950X only draws 140W or 120A, I'm pretty sure the VRMs can handle that. The 3900X could even be overclocked when a little airflow is given to the VRMs. You're comparing two very capable boards to see which is more overkill. END OF RANT. I guess there's a lot of demand for the Tomahawk because for some reason it's really popular, seems people don't really exhaust their options.

      • +1

Agreed. Kinda defeats the purpose of the B450 which is supposed to be cheaper lol. Most people looking for a 3700X or 3600 wouldn't even take advantage of those "slightly better VRMs". Oh well, they'll be missing out on a few USB ports and an extra M.2 slot.

        • +1

          And a couple of dinners.

  • Pre-order is coming up as "Out of Stock".
Though it looks like the stores are still stocked.

Going to head around to get one!

    • Looks like the pre-orders for 1/7/20 have been restocked. Was able to place online order.

  • thanks OP. I missed the $169 but it's still the cheapest around delivered for $189.
