Also avaliable is Dell Alienware m15 $2159.20. I believe it's the original m15 which means the memory is upgradeable.
Seems like an unbalanced design - 8GB, 60Hz, 256GB SSD, RTX2070mq. You can upgrade the memory and storage easily enough though you're stuck with a 60Hz display. Probably given lowest specs just to sell quick. Still pretty cheap for an Alienware with a 2070 imo.

  • Can you customise the order such as increase the RAM to 32GB ?

    • You can't add any yourself because by default it comes with 2x8GB which fills all the DIMM slots unless you want to waste 2 perfectly good SODIMMs. Because it's on eBay I doubt you could customize it. I'm curious what makes you want 32GB?

      • +1

I would like to ensure that the laptop is till usable for longer period as software requirement is higher and higher

        • Nah you're fine, you could always add 32GB down the line. If 8GB RAM is still perfectly fine I don't see you needing more than 16GB in the lifespan of this laptop unless you do content creation.

          • @Void: Another use case I can think of is playing minecraft with 100+ mods. I imagine you need more than 16GB for that even when playing single player

        • +2

In that case, I would just get whatever that is available. When the need comes (a year from now perhaps), you can opt to upgrade yourself. By then you would have extracted the value out of these DIMMS. You could also offload on the market when you upgrade. I've been using 16GB for a long while now for all tasks including content creation and I don't see any urgent needs for 32GB. I mean I have no machines for comparison and when doing productivity task, I don't see a need to find out if I could finish a task 1 minute faster. I mean fast enough is fast enough right?

    • Not directly from eBay no. I have seen custom listings on Dells eBay page for user IDs so you may be able to contact them, get a price and listing and purchase it this way.

      • I contacted Dell ebay on the other day, they said they won't be able to customise hardware upgrade.

        • Yep, custom listings are for extended warranty from what I can tell

I bought a similar spec Alienware m15 R1 for $2500 but with 144Hz and 512GB drive. The performance is great and has no issues with thermals. After undervolting, the CPU hovers around 75-78C and GPU hovers around 68-72C at max fan speeds. One thing I like about the machine is at max fan speed, it is not loud at all although it does have a certain pitch/tone. If I let it run on Balanced profile, it will hover to around 85C before the fan curve forces the fan to go max. So you get better acoustic comfort at the sacrifice of some thermal comfort.

The speakers though sound like crap and I don't understand why all gaming laptops are like that. They try to tune for the 3D gaming environment by making the speakers go out of phase to the point of sounding tinny.

I think the G5 specs are great for the price but the new G5 design has less exhaust vents now.

    • Removing air vents seems like a way to thermal throttle a laptop unless it's by design. Either way 10th gen seems to have pushed prices up so I'll keep waiting

      • +2

Yeah 10750H doesn't bring a lot of speed improvements over 9750H and the same of 9750H over 8750H. So just pick whats good for the budget. I think the extra ones would pay are just for marketing.

        • +3

Yep that's very true. Search for the unicorn laptop continues.

          • @dazza826: Haha, I keep reading (and using) that term myself. Really like the value proposition of the mid spec G5 here when I found it was 10% off on ebay (it's been in my watch list) and figured I'd test out PDTECH20 on it. Was happy to see it tick under $2k.

But still I have reservations. Is the 68wh good enough? Is the chassis slim enough? I'm not seeing this exact model reviewed by all the known YouTubers as much (or I'm blind).

    • Got the Alienware m15 R1 too. 144Hz with RTX2060. Had to undervolt the cpu. Didn’t think the speakers were too bad, especially coming from an ASUS GL502VS which didn’t have much volume. G5 are better value but I think the Alienware is decent. RAM upgrade shouldn’t be too expensive and for storage you can either put a 2.5in drive or a second m.2/nvme drive (not both unfortunately). The 60Hz display is the only part which would make me hesitant.

      • +1

Actually there is one alternative which I think may be a good compromise. Pair the Alienware with a 144Hz capable monitor. There is a mini DP port at the rear so it should be able to support Gsync. One could also buy a vertical stand to prop up the laptop to save space. The air intakes are bottom and above the keyboard area so it should be ok with lid close. Its an extra buy obviously but not necessary to be had now.

My thinking is if one wants to be 'competitive' while on the move, then for sure go with the 144Hz. But if one just wants to enjoy game while on the move, then I don't see 60Hz being a skill cap. Plus you are likely going to have better battery life and better thermals (if you choose to cap the fps to 60 thereabouts). Another way to look at it, you have more headroom because your target fps is 60.

I tried playing WOT on the 15" screen. Its very tiny and took me awhile to adjust. Playing WOT on a 27" panel is so much better.

        • +1

I’ve actually done this with my laptop, QHD 144Hz monitor and put the laptop on a cooler and use it in dual screen. I’m looking at the monitor screen 80% of the time so even having a 60Hz laptop screen would not be that big a deal. I think it’s probably better to keep it open just to get as much cooling as possible so I don’t think the verticals stand is a good idea.

  • Is the RTX 2060 Max Q?

    • No, it’s the RTX2060 mobile

  • +1

In that case, the 2060 is best option here.

    • If it is the 90W TDP version then its the max-P variant. But highly likely is the max-P as 2060 MQ is rare if it exist at all.

  • Worth an extra ~$600 over this for the newer processor and slightly faster ram? (ignoring the fact the other one is now out of stock)

    • Nope. 2933MHz over 2666MHz is gonna be negligible on Intel platform, and the 10750H is just a slightly higher clocked 9750H.

    • Not really. I just included the 1660Ti for completeness, the 2060 and 2070mq are the better deals imo

  • How would you compare this to the G5’s? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/392644299374 My only hesitation is the 60hz screen over the 144hz of the G5. Wouldn’t be much of an issue for me as I’ll be using an external monitor most the the time, but still on the go 144hz would be ideal.

Edit - the M15 r1 comes down to $2159 after the code

    • +1

Yeah, I’ve included that machine in the description. It’s a great price for an Alienware, with a 2070 MaxQ. It seems unbalanced having such a high end graphics card with 8GB, 256GB SSD and 60Hz display. Upgrading the memory to 16GB would be my first priority. The laptop has a second m.2. slot and a standard 2.5” hard drive bay. You can only use one unfortunately but it does allow options for storage upgrades. The 60Hz display is the only part which is not upgradeable, but since you’ll be hooked up to a monitor it’s probably ok.
The G5 is more balanced but Alienware has the premium build and service.

I actually own this laptop (8th gen i7, 144hz, 2060 variant) and think it’s great. If you have any specific questions about it, I’m happy to answer them.

      • Agreed, the price is very tempting but as you said it’s a Frankenstein build with the 2070 but only 8gb/256gb/60hz. If there was an option to upgrade to 144hz I think I’d pull the trigger immediately.

        • +1

It’s definitely being priced to sell, the m15 r3 has recently launched so they’re likely clearing out all the original m15s. I think it’s the cheapest for a brand new m15 ever but they’ve put in the cheapest ram, screen and SSD to make it possible. The 60Hz display would make me hesitate to buy it too

  • not a good deal at all, recently, to counter AMD, Intel and Lenovo dropped the price for Y7000p in China market to 8299 RMB which is equal to around 1600 AUD with unbelievable spec i7 10875H+16gb+512G(nvme)+2060+144hz 100Srgb screen.

    • That’s a great price but is it accessible for us in Australia?

      • My suggestion is to go for AMD 4800H 2060 laptop if you want it right now, Asus has similar models and specs with 45 NTSC screen. Otherwise, waiting for Lenovo to adjust the price for y7000p(Legion 7i) in Australia. The performance between 4800H and 10875 is quite similar.

  • Does anyone know whats the g5's sRGB% ?
The rest of the specs indicates its pretty good for photo editing.

    • The G5 SE (AMD cpu and gpu variant) has 108% sRGB gamut according to laptopmag. It’s not the same laptop though, probably best to contact Dell to find out

      • Does anyone know the difference between 100% sRGB and 70% NTSC ? Which one is better and why ?

  • Should I get this, or the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14?

For Video Editing, Ableton, and some gaming. Often used in a Dell Dock, although I believe non-dell laptops should work too.

Upgrading from a Dell XPS13 from a few years ago. Only 2 core, which is too slow.

Edit: I see this is twice the weight of the ROG. That's not great.

    • +1

I think you will be happier with the Zephyrus G14 is you prefer a lighter laptop.

  • +1

I think prices dropped on all variants and code still works. Purchased RTX2070 thanks OP

    • Looks like you're correct. I'll update prices shortly
Dell must be getting a few more sales before the new financial year

  • Is the screen the same on all of these g5 models?
Im planning to go and see one (i7 gtx1660)in local goodguys, but probably want to order the rtx2070 or 2070 model

    • It might be the older G5, also there’s a 60Hz display version. If it’s 10th gen. i7 and 144Hz display. It will be the same

  • +1
    • Good price, better value with that one. RTX is more powerful than the RX graphics though AMD cpu is better than intel.
